The National Transportation Safety Board released a report Wednesday stating that the pilots were likely at fault with the August 2019 plane crash involving former NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his family in Tennessee. The report stated that the pilot's approaching the runway at Elizabethton Municipal Airport too fast and the flight crew's decision not to abort the landing was the likely cause of the crash. The plane then bounce landed, causing a landing gear to collapse, and the pilots losing control of the airplane."Contributing to the accident was the pilot's failure to deploy the speedbrakes during the initial touchdown, which may have prevented the runway excursion, and the pilot's attempt to go around after deployment of the thrust reversers," the report said.Earnhardt's wife and child were also onboard the plane when it crashed. The agency said the pilot and co-pilot were not injured, and the three passengers sustained minor injuries. You can read the full report below: NTSB Earnhardt Jr. Report by Sarah Dewberry on Scribd 1058

The number of eligible Latino voters has never been as high as it is now. According to a Pew Research study 32 million Latinos could cast a ballot in this election. However, there is a sentiment among many Latino voters that their vote won’t make a difference. Dora Ramirez, of El Paso, Texas, tells me she is sick and tired of issues facing the Latino community not being addressed by politicians. “We bring money into the economy, we work in the economy. People would not have strawberries or lettuce or avocados if people did not go out and work, and yet they are dismissing us as if we are nothing," said Ramirez. In an effort to engage voters, volunteers were out at a local food pantry. Every person driving up for food is asked if they are registered to vote and if they know where to drop off their ballot. Many have described the Latino vote as a “sleeping giant." A Pew Research study is showing the “sleeping giant” could come to life during this election showing there are 5.6 million registered Latino voters in Texas, 7.9 million in California, 3.1 million in Florida, 2 million in New York and more than a million in Arizona. Latino voters in Texas could potentially turn it into a swing state.Beto O’Rourke and his team from Powered By The People are ramping up their efforts to get people to register to vote. O’Rourke says he has heard from many Latino voters that they don’t feel included by political parties and will not vote, but a group that he is seeing become quite active is the younger Latino community. “Those young people, I believe, are not only going to vote in record numbers, but they are getting their folks and their grandparents and the people in their lives to vote as well," said O’Rourke.Miranda Escobar Gregory is one of those young Latinos. At 20 years old, this will be her first time voting. “I know that I now have more of a voice than I did 2 years ago," said Escobar Gregory. Born and raised in El Paso, as a first-generation Mexican American she faces some unique challenges in adapting her own political believes and still respecting those of her conservative upbringing. “If we have a strong presence in this country, why are we not using our voice to represent us and letting other people do it for us," said Escobar Gregory.Escobar Gregory is one of the more than 3 million registered young Latino voters, a group many believe will show up in record numbers during this election. 2437

The larger number of faster and cheaper COVID-19 tests is offering hope.Researchers at Harvard and Brown say we need about 2 million tests a day of symptomatic people and contacts to fight the spread of the virus. When you add in testing for teachers, students, nursing home residents and staff, the number is about 4.4 million. That's around four times the amount of people being tested per day, according to the COVID Tracking Project.“So, I think it's important to make sure we actually have a goal post about where the country needs to head, because the testing manufacturers need to know what that number looks like in order to make their own business and manufacturing decisions about how to scale,” said Dr. Thomas Tsai with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.Tsai says we don't have enough capacity yet with the rapid antigen tests. He says letting the supply chain drive our guidelines for testing won't get us where we need to be.He says PCR tests that take longer to come back are more accurate, but says the antigen tests are promising because we screen more often.“Think about all the information that we’ve gleaned just from the exposure at the White House in terms of the patterns over the last several days,” said Tsai. “That kind of information, that kind of action should not just be reserved for our politicians and our athletes and celebrities. That's what all Americans deserve in terms of being about to have that information to fight the pandemic.”He says testing by itself only gives you information. It's the actions like masking and distancing that really protect you.He says the federal government needs to make testing cheaper or even free for it to work. 1700

The National Weather Service is projecting Southern Arizona's fire season to be more active than normal."There's leftover dry fuels from last year, and there's newly formed fine fuels," Warning Coordination Meteorologist Ken Drozd said.Above average daytime high temperatures, combined with storm systems bringing wind but no rain, and very dry conditions, are some of the reasons why the NWS projects May and June to have the more fire activity than normal.Due to a wet February, there is now more dry fuel in the region, according to Drozd. Sometimes, significant rain events leading into fire season can delay or shorten it, but that wasn't the case this year."Those new grasses that greened up from that precipitation event have now dried out again, due to the warm temperatures we've experienced lately," Drozd said."The hotter you get, the more you're going to dry things out. It just keeps things dried out unless you get some intermediate rain that'll come in, and again, there's none in the forecast right now."Last year, fires ripped through Southern Arizona from April to July, blackening landscapes and destroying homes in their paths. People from communities all through the region were forced to evacuate, sometimes on multiple occasions. The American Red Cross is urging people prepare ahead of time.
