An animal shelter in Canada says it has gotten calls from around the world after it shared the story of a dog that was found along with five kittens.A post from the Pet and Wildlife shelter in Chatham, Ontario, described how the dog was found keeping the kittens warm on the side of a road on a cold night.She was cuddling up against them in the snow.Someone notified a shelter, and an animal control officer picked them up.The kittens have been taken in by a foster family because they are not old enough to be adopted yet.The dog, now named Serenity, will be ready for adoption on Dec. 3. 602

A new face is serving up coffee as a Starbucks barista in the Hyatt Place Boca Raton in Florida. It's the latest promotion for Angie Diaz in her 8 months in hospitality. Diaz moved from Colombia, so she had been learning a new language while also finding a job. She's deaf, which made the transition that much more complicated, learning the signed and written words of her new community. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports only about 19% of people with disabilities are employed in the United States, far less than the general population. "In the past, I really had a lot of struggles and I really had to open myself up to opportunities," Diaz signed.Diaz went through the Disability Services Hospitality Training Program with CareerSource in Palm Beach County. She learned hospitality skills while being given fair access to an interpreter in class. When she was first hired at the hotel, she was provided an interpreter for her training there. "My team members, when they found out I was deaf, they didn't really know how to handle it. They thought maybe it would be really hard to communicate," she signed. General Manager Sharon Ballard said Diaz quickly helped the coworkers adjust. "She's no different from anyone else, it's just the few alterations we have to communicate with her," Ballard said.Ballard said Diaz gave such excellent customer service, she was promoted to the position of a Starbucks Barista. "So she's working a bit one-on-one with the guests, and then hopefully we'll be able to get her at the front desk as well. To just move her up in her career," Ballard said.Hyatt Place Boca Raton has provided a machine that allows Diaz and other employees to basically "text" back and forth quickly on two computers facing each other. Diaz, however, suggests there are many ways to communicate, even if a person hasn't learned sign language yet, including using gestures and facial expressions."I have a really go-getter personality, and I showed them that we can find ways to communicate," she explained.Diaz is a model of success. Four other associates who are deaf have been hired in Hyatt hotels in the area, all from the CareerSource program. "All of this collectively has helped me become who I am. And I feel like I have really established myself as a deaf community member here. And I continue to learn and I feel so proud about that," Diaz explained.The 2394

A surprising discovery in a local park has St. Pete police giving three young kids ages 8, 7, and 5, a much-deserved shout out.On Sunday, Abigail Ellis, 7, her brother Harry, 5, and a neighborhood friend were cleaning up trash from Forrest Bluff Park when they came across a revolver in the creek bed.“I said there is a gun come see it,” Abigail said. Instead of picking up the gun Abigail said she knew better.“Mom and dad taught me about guns, and sometimes I watch movies, and there would be guns and killing,” Abigail said. An African-American attorney for Maryland Legal Aid is accusing an officer with the Harford County Sheriff's office of detaining and questioning him after he appeared in court to represent his client.According to the attorneys defending Rashad James, James was getting an expungement for his absent client at the Harford County District Court when an officer with the Harford County Sheriff's Office suspected James was the client. They say James was acknowledged by the judge as the counsel representing the client and was granted the expungement petition. But when he was leaving the courtroom, he was stopped by the officer who addressed him using the client's name. They say James told the officer that he was not the client, but that he was his attorney. The officer then instructed James to show his ID, which James produced as evidence to support his identity. They say the officer did not accept his ID as proof and took him to an interview room where he was questioned for about ten minutes.The officer let him go after being questioned.An attorney representing James believes that if he was white, the officer would not have doubted that he was an attorney, would not have questioned his identity and would not have detained him after seeing his driver’s license.“There is no plausible explanation other than racial bias,” said Andrew D.
