SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The University of California Board of Regents announced Wednesday that it will ease admissions requirements for students applying to its nine campuses, including UC San Diego, during the coronavirus pandemic.The board voted Tuesday to suspend using SAT scores and letter grade requirements for A-G courses completed within the 2020 school year for all students who apply."We want to help alleviate the tremendous disruption and anxiety that is already overwhelming prospective students due to COVID-19," said John Perez, chair of the UC Board of Regents. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UC San Diego announced Monday a million gift from the John and Mary Tu Foundation, designated to help increase the number of people tested for COVID-19, as well as develop new ways to track and treat the virus.The award supports the clinical research activities of UCSD translational research virologist Dr. Davey Smith, who is "advancing new diagnostics, therapies and ways to monitor the spread of the virus," according to a university statement."What we are trying to do is save lives," John Tu said of the gift to create the John and Mary Tu Foundation COVID-19 Response Fund. "It's very simple: with this research, Dr. Smith is working on behalf of everybody, to save us, to save the world."At the onset of the pandemic, Smith and his team began to investigate methods that would increase the efficiency of testing as well as understand the disease process -- how the virus mutates and spreads within a population. Through sequencing the virus, he is able to track the disease as it spreads into vulnerable populations, which informs the best means for contact tracing.Smith is also leading clinical trials to test new drugs for treatment of COVID-19 for those who have moderately severe cases."At this critical time during the COVID-19 pandemic, the generosity of the John and Mary Tu Foundation has an immediate positive impact on our efforts," said UCSD Chancellor Pradeep K. "That’s just my opinion."Rosati said he believes people were working out a safe distance apart."I know it’s very safe, there’s disinfectants everywhere, they’re wiping everything down all day long in between each person," he explained. "If anyone even slightly has the slightest cough or sniffle, the owner, Rick, asks them to leave."The San Diego Police Department said The Gym choosing to stay open is in violation of the county public health order, which is a misdemeanor. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A dog walk in South Park turned frantic as a couple tries to fend off a bee attack that didn't end when they got inside their home.Grape Street, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Patricia Young, her husband, and two dogs were near Marlton drive, just about done with their walk, when one of the dogs started sniffing a bush."All of a sudden I felt a really sharp stabbing in my arm. Then I heard buzzing near my eye and swatted at it. That’s when my husband started to get stung," said Young.Young says she didn’t see a swarm but heard a constant, loud buzzing."My husband is swatting and his glasses fall of. I pick them up, and he’s getting attacked ... Take my mask off and swing it around my back, and I get stung on my back," said Young.Young says her husband picked up one of the dogs, and they scrambled to get home, about 2 blocks away."We’re kind of yelping and squealing and swatting, and then get home, and it's that sense of, 'We’re safe,'" said Young,Not so fast. Inside the home, she found a bee on one of the dogs, and then one in the bathroom."When I came out to the kitchen, the bees were congregating in the light in the kitchen," said Young.In the end, they killed about eight bees. Their nine-year-old Maltese mix had to be treated by a veterinarian for a possible sting. Both Young and her husband stung several times"It's a freaky, terrible thing to be chased by bees into your home," said Young.Jeff Lutz, the owner of Bee Best Bee Removal, says a two-block chase is unusual, adding that "hot temperature can make bees more active," as they bring in water to keep the hive cool.It’s unclear if the bees were Africanized bees, which would require a DNA test to determine.Lutz says bee removal calls are down significantly this year but attributes that to the impact of COVID-19. 1812

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 55-year-old man was arrested Friday after hitting a 19-year-old with his car following a drunken argument, San Diego Police say.According to police, the suspect, Fernando Chavez Lopez, 55, got into an argument with a 19-year-old man before 11 a.m. Friday. Lopez was reportedly drunk at the time of the dispute. After the argument ended, police say Lopez went looking for the victim, locating him crossing the street at an intersection on the 3100 block on National Avenue.Police say the suspect deliberately drove his vehicle into the victim, hitting him before taking off when police were called.Ten minutes later, officers found the suspect driving on the 1100 block of Sicard Street. He was detained and later positively identified by witnesses, police say.The victim sustained minor scrapes and bruises and was taken to the hospital.Lopez was arrested and booked into jail, police say. 919
