SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Now that a snowy storm is reaching San Diego County, many will head up to the mountains and East County to enjoy a taste of winter.That means trips up to Palomar Mountain, Mt. Laguna, Alpine, and Julian to frolic in the fresh, fluffy snow. But, that also means being prepared.Tire chains, four-wheel drive, extra supplies, and appropriate clothing are all a must. So is knowing exactly where you're allowed to stop off on land that's open to the public. The county's Department of Public Works posts road updates online on Facebook and Twitter. It's also recommended not to simply stop off the road to enjoy snow or hop fences into possibly private property. Laguna: For quick access to snow on Mt. Laguna, stop off at the Mt. Laguna Lodge. Numerous trails, including Big Laguna Trail and Sunset Trail, make the mountain perfect for checking out the snow off the roadside.Cuyamaca Rancho State Park: Enjoy the snow at Cuyamaca Rancho State Park at campsites like Paso Picacho or Green Valley, and they also include bathrooms, which families will likely find important. Or head to trailheads leading up to Stonewall Peak and Cuyamaca Peak or Lake Cuyamaca for a scenic view.Palomar Mountain State Park: Hiking trails and family campsites at Palomar are a great option for enjoying snowfall. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- National City police are searching for the driver linked to a hit-and-run crash that killed a skateboarder earlier this month.Police said on July 10, at around 12:30 a.m., 28-year-old Victor Ernest Morales was riding his skateboard northbound on the street in the 500 block of Palm Avenue when he was struck from behind by an unknown vehicle at a high rate of speed.The vehicle sped away, leaving Morales on the road, police said. He suffered major injuries and later died.According to police, Morales’ girlfriend and a friend were with him at the time of the incident.The vehicle in the case is believed to be a silver-colored, 4-door, 1999-2002 Toyota Echo. Police said the vehicle likely has damage to the front driver’s side, as well as damage to the driver’s side headlight and windshield.A surveillance camera captured a photo of the vehicle believed to be involved in the collision, and police are asking any businesses in the area that may have video of the vehicle before or after the crash to contact them.Investigators are also asking vehicle repair shops to be on the lookout for the vehicle due to its damage from the crash.Anyone with information on the case is urged to contact the National City Police Department’s Investigations Unit at 619-336-4474 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.A reward of up to ,000 is being offered to anyone with information that leads to an arrest in the case. 1434

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One of the most anticipated panels of Comic-Con Day 2 was "The Walking Dead" Panel. Fans left Hall H with several surprises for the upcoming season. If you're a Comic-Con mega fan, patience is a vital part of the experience. Many slept on the grassy courtyard for hours, just to claim a seat inside the coveted Hall H. Fans say they can't get enough. "I've been a fan since the first season came out," Superfan, Marvin Calderon said. "I'm also a fan of the comic books."Calderon showed us his right arm. It is entirely covered with "The Walking Dead" themed tattoos, proving to us, his extreme loyalty to the show.Friday's panel featured the showrunner, Angela Kang, her executive producers, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Dave Alpert, and Greg Nicotero, as well as cast members Norman Reedus, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Avi Nash, Cooper Andrews, Ryan Hurst, Nadia Hilker, Eleanor Matsuura, and Cailey Fleming. This was 12-year-old Cailey Fleming's first Comic-Con experience, and she stole the show. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Monday afternoon, the San Diego City Council rescinded regulations on short-term rentals in an 8-1 vote. On Aug. 1, the council voted 6-2 in favor of rules to regulate short-term vacation rentals in San Diego. The regulations were set to take effect in July 2019.  These regulations limited the rentals to primary residences, which would force some investors or owners of more than one home to sell their properties or rent them out long-term.City Councilwoman Lorie Zapf was Monday’s lone vote against the repeal.The group Share San Diego called Monday's vote "an important step towards fair and effective short-term rental regulations." 690

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - North Park’s Chicken Pie Shop is celebrating 80 years in business Friday and Saturday with deals for customers.The restaurant was originally located on 5th Avenue downtown. Then-owner George Whitehead moved his business to Hillcrest. The storefront at 5th and Robinson now houses a Starbucks.Eventually, Whitehead’s longtime employee John Townsend bought the business and moved it to El Cajon Blvd. at Oregon St. Townsend handed it down to his two sons.“Our father worked so hard for so many years. It’s a grind; you gotta be up for the task each and every day.”Bob Townsend is proud of the Chicken Pie Shop's history. He estimates the number of chicken pies sold at more than 30 million.“People just keep coming,” said Townsend. “They respect good old-school cooking.”Townsend described customers who travel to San Diego and head straight to North Park from the airport. Others buy coolers to bring home some of the restaurant’s frozen creations. Some devoted patrons included boxer Archie Moore and Mesa College coach Bill Sandback, both of whom Townsend served regularly until they passed.It’s not just the customers who stick around. The restaurant's dessert baker has been working for Chicken Pie Shop for 55 years and is now in his 80s.“If I made him retire, he’d probably die,” Townsend said.While Townsend is invested in the family legacy, his wife Lisa takes care of day-to-day operations while Townsend works as an instructor at Riverwalk Golf Course in Mission Valley. The Townsend family tradition may continue.
