SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After all these years, people still love coming to the San Diego Zoo to see the California condors.At one point in the 1980's, there were only 22 of them living outside captivity. The zoo began a major effort to save the species, getting them to reproduce and then releasing them across the state. It's worked. There are now more than 250 flying across the American West and Mexico.RELATED: How the wild parrots of San Diego arrived in America's Finest City"It's really good for us, actually, because they help to reduce all the bad things that cause our sicknesses and ill health. So it's pretty cool," says Maggie Stack, a San Diego State graduate student. Stack is part of a new SDSU team working with the San Diego Zoo to save the bird.As much success as the zoo has had with the condor program, new research shows that the condors in the wild are still under threat."The condors are still critically endangered, so there's still a long way for them to go until we can have a really self-sustaining population," Stack said.RELATED: New giraffe calf joins in the herd at San Diego Zoo exhibitA big reason for that is that the same pollutants that nearly killed the condor off so many years ago are still hurting them today. Stack's team is doing research suggesting that the condors are still dealing with lead poisoning and the chemical DDT, which was banned nearly 40 years ago."Those can cause egg shell thinning in condors," Stack added. "So we're seeing a significant amount of egg shell thinning in condors that live on the coast."A thinner shell means a greater chance of the egg being crushed, often accidentally by the parent condors trying to keep the egg safe.The researchers hope their work at SDSU can help solve the problem. 1768

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego restaurant group is turning to an old trend to try to make it through the latest shutdown order.The order, which went into effect Monday, relegated restaurants to takeout and delivery only, decimating their bottom line and forcing them to cut jobs and reduce hours."Right now the way it's been, it's not profitable," said Alex Navarrete, general manager of Karina's restaurant group. "We're giving everybody one shifts, two shifts, but what is that going to do?"Karina's restaurant group has nine establishments around the county. Prior to the pandemic, it had dozens of workers at each location. Now, it has four workers on the clock at anytime at each. "They all want to work, I just don't have hours now, since we're only doing takeout," Navarrete said. Navarette is now trying to go above and beyond for his company and his employees - even as his options are limited. Four of the group's restaurants -- two in the Otay Ranch mall, and others in Chula Vista and La Jolla -- will try to take advantage of their parking lots. They're essentially turning into car hops, where patrons get their food delivered to their cars and eat in the parking lot. "This would be a perfect time to get that cobwebs off the motor home and bring it out, bring the family out," he said. Curbside pickup for restaurant food is nothing new, but the Karina's group is eyeing making it more festive, with potentiality live music or a DJ outdoors at its two restaurants in the Otay Ranch Mall - Karina's Mexican Seafood and Savoie Italian Eatery. Navaraette said by staying and eating in the car, guests could order their food in courses, so the tacos and other entrees don't get soggy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A year-long construction project to improve State Route 163 hit a milestone Tuesday morning with the completion of work on Friars and Frazee Roads.Crews arrived early in the morning, finishing up last minute preps before the big reveal. One noticeably new addition are signal lights put in place to help regulate the flow of traffic.The city also made improvements, like adding lanes on Friars Road. There are four lanes going east and four lanes going west. Changes to the on and off ramps from the 163 onto Friars Road may reduce the confusion and congestion caused by the old traffic pattern. Crews also added sidewalks and clearly-marked bike lanes. “We can separate and have a path for all modes of traffic including foot and bike traffic. So, it will be safer for everyone using Friars Road. It’s a safer facility now that we made these improvements," said a Caltrans spokesperson.The “Open for Business,” ceremony took place at 10 a.m. 969

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Escondido firefighter is being praised for a small act of kindness that impacted a 7-year-old in a big way.Last week the department was responding to palm trees on fire. That's when Craig Domingue, a fire engineer, noticed Eli walking with his mom. "We happened to be walking and spotted the fire truck. Eli kind of, his anxiety was kicking in," said Eli's mom, Monica Zamora. Eli is on the autism spectrum; loud noises and first responders give him anxiety. "I just went up to him and introduced myself and talked to him like I would talk to any person, and it was a really neat interaction," said Domingue.Domingue says he was able to recognize Eli was on the spectrum because his 10-year-old son is too. He was able to calm Eli down and thanked him for picking up trash."Eli at the time was out picking up trash, which is so neat that he's here doing something good for our community, just like all the other firefighters that are here doing good for the community," said Domingue. "We do go pick up trash a lot, but it's not often people acknowledge him and thank him for what he's doing," said Zamora. Zamora shared the positive interaction on Facebook, and over 1,000 people have reacted to the post. Many have since messaged Zamora, thanking Eli for all he does in the community. 1316

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego Police officer and another person were struck by a vehicle along a major Midway District roadway Thursday morning.The officer was responding to a vandalism call at about 4:30 a.m. in the 2900 block of Midway Drive at Rosecrans Street, according to police.The officer was outside of his patrol vehicle and working to detain a suspect when both were struck by a passing SUV. Witnesses say the officer had the suspect pinned down when they were hit."The suspect ran from the officers. While taking the suspect into custody in the street, both were stuck by an oncoming vehicle," SDPD said via a Tweet.The officer is in serious but stable condition. The unidentified officer was spotted on a gurney and being lifted into an ambulance while giving the thumbs up sign.
