TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — As the Florida State Seminoles men’s basketball team prepares for their Atlantic Coast Conference showdown with Georgia Tech on Tuesday, the emotions from the events that unfolded in Saturday’s game against Florida Gators are still being felt within this program. When Florida standout junior Keyonate Johnson collapsed on the floor following an early timeout, it sent a numbing silence throughout Tucker Center, followed by a shockwave of emotions that hit the Seminole team hard.On Monday, WTXL learned that FSU head coach Leonard Hamilton was ready to respect whatever decision Florida head coach Mike White and their administration were going to make, even if that meant ending Saturday's game right then and there. It was an unexpected and unfamiliar situation for many to cope with.“My comment was fellas; the only thing we can do right now is to pray for this young man. And immediately I had several players on their knees crying and praying," said Hamilton. "And from a coaching standpoint, we always as human beings respond in relation to the experiences that we’ve had, and we try to relate to situations as a result of things we’ve seen, learned, and experienced. But as a head coach, I’ve never experienced anything like this.”The teams went on to finish the game, which the Seminoles won 83-71.On Monday, the Florida Gators men's basketball team released a statement on Twitter saying Johnson was "following simple commands and undergoing further tests," as he remained in critical but stable condition Monday afternoon. 1560

Teachers are talking candidly about the challenges this school year will bring. With many school districts in Virginia opting to start the school year with distance learning, one Hampton Roads social studies teacher shares his thoughts on how to help students have a virtually successful school year.Christopher True is a middle school social studies teacher who is gearing up for a new school year and the inevitable challenge that will come with it.True says communication is key to virtual success.“If that student is struggling with something, they may not be telling the parent.”He says parents should encourage their children not to be afraid to reach out to their teacher for help.True says the communication between students and teachers is just as important as the communication between the teachers and parents. He says parents shouldn’t be afraid of contacting teachers and describes virtual learning as “a community-led effort.”Schools will undoubtedly have expectations for students, even at home, but True hopes those expectations come leniency.“If you have a student whose parents work and [that student] actually has to go to daycare, they can't be expected to be in a class zoom at 10 a.m. if they don't have access to that stuff. And that's just going to be one of those things that we have to account for.”The test run of virtual learning at the end of last school year taught everyone new lessons, including that it takes time to adjust. While he’s banking on beginning the school year virtually, True is looking forward to connecting in the classroom once again.“There's no place I'd rather be. I can't wait to sit in a classroom with my kids again when we can do it safely and I can keep my students safe.”WTKR's Kofo Lasaki first reported this story. 1779
The American Hockey League is targeting a Feb. 5 start date for next season. The AHL's board of governors determined that projected start date during a call Wednesday. The AHL is the top minor league affiliate of the NHL, which is targeting a Jan. 1 start for the season. A typical AHL season usually starts after the NHL gets underway. NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly says he doesn't expect the AHL announcement to affect the NHL's planning. Daly adds the AHL has kept the NHL informed during its decision-making process and those general managers were briefed last week. 582
Synthetic cannabinoids — often called Spice, K2 or fake weed — have been tied to 38 cases of severe bleeding, including one death, across Chicago and areas in central Illinois. All of those cases required hospitalization related to coughing up blood, blood in the urine, bloody nose, bleeding gums and other symptoms. Three cases tested positive for brodifacoum, or rat poison, according to a statement from the Illinois Department of Public Health on Saturday. Now, state officials are working to identify any common synthetic cannabinoid products related to those cases and to determine where the products were obtained. There are still many questions about the outbreak that need answers."This is the first time we've seen an outbreak of this magnitude in the area," Melaney Arnold, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Public Health, said Monday."We're working with numerous different partners across the city and state as we investigate this outbreak," she said.Synthetic cannabinoids are sold in convenience stores, gas stations, drug paraphernalia shops, novelty stores and even online.Health officials warn that anyone who has a reaction to synthetic cannabinoids immediately should call 911 or be taken to an emergency department. 1267
