EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Grossmont College and the office of Senator Joel Anderson came together for the eighth year in a row to honor the victims of September 11th. The day before the ceremony, volunteers put up 2,977 flags one for each life taken that September morning. San Diego native and 9/11 survivor, Bill Hay, was the keynote speaker for the memorial. Hay was on the 55th floor of the north tower when the first plane hit.Hay is 89-years-old and a Marine veteran with two purple hearts. He says he shares his story every year because he doesn't want younger generations to forget about what happened. EL CENTRO, Calif. (KGTV) — Three U.S. citizens were arrested and 52 people were taken into custody in two smuggling attempts in the El Centro area early Friday.The first incident occurred just after 5 a.m., according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. A remote video surveillance system reported a stake bed truck and van suspected of smuggling near the border wall west of Mount Signal Road. Agents responded and stopped the truck as it traveled toward Highway 98, but the van continued on, CBP said.The driver of the truck, a 22-year-old U.S. citizen, admitted he was transporting individuals illegally in the rear cargo area of the truck. The truck was carrying 37 people, 36 adult Mexican nationals and one adult Guatemalan national, who were hiding under a black tarp in the truck bed, CBP said.RELATED: Leader of San Diego, Baja California maritime smuggling ring arrestedSoon afterward, the van that agents spotted earlier and followed was stopped. EL CAJON (CNS) - A resident at an East County independent-living facility was ordered Thursday to stand trial on a murder charge for allegedly killing a fellow resident by beating him in the face and head with a frying pan following an early morning argument.Brad Masaru Payton, 26, faces 26 years to life in state prison if convicted of the murder charge and an allegation of personally using a deadly weapon in the killing of Matthew McCarthy.Police said the violence at the transitional group home in the 1200 block of Naranca Avenue in El Cajon was reported shortly before 5 a.m. last Dec. 20. Patrol officers arrived to find a badly beaten McCarthy in a bedroom at the residence, said El Cajon Police Lt. Payton was arrested without incident.According to Miller, the victim and the defendant knew each other and lived in separate rooms. Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit confirmed on his Facebook page on Monday that he was rescued as Hurricane Maria hit his small island nation. Hurricane Maria made landfall just before 10 p.m. ET on the island of Dominica with top winds of 160 MPH. Skerrit's roof was one of many that were ripped off as Maria came on shore. "My roof is gone. I am at the complete mercy of the hurricane. House is flooding," Skerrit said just before being rescued. Hurricane Maria is the second Category 5 hurricane to strike the Caribbean in the last two weeks. Hurricane Maria is following a similar path as Hurricane Irma, which devastated parts of the Caribbean before coming on shore in Florida on Sept. 10.Local radio reports said that parts of Dominica are flooded, and there has been roof failure at a local hospital.
