This week is the end of an era at the Warren Tech Center in Michigan. A man who has worked there for more than 67 years will say goodbye to co-workers as he retires. The UAW says Elmer Zurakowski is the highest seniority hourly employee in the all of General Motors. Mr. Zurakowski stopped at his local UAW hall before coming in to work on Wednesday. There they showed him a plaque made for him by his co-workers celebrating a more than 67-year-long career. “Well I started working when I was 18-years-old. I became a die maker apprentice. This was at Plant 23 in Detroit,” recalled Zurakowski. It was 1951. He remembers as he started the job seeing workers building tanks for the Korean War. He was ready to learn. “When I started the apprenticeship I wanted to go into the wood field. They said according to your tests it shows you would be better working with metal than wood. I didn’t know anything about metal, but growing up on a farm I used wood all the time. What they did, I think, they needed more die makers than wood pattern makers. But I went along with that and I was very happy with it,” said Zurakowski. The work at General Motors supported his family. He and his wife had a son and three daughters. He says he is going to miss seeing his co-workers everyday. “We have interesting people. There are natural teachers in there. It is an interesting place to work,” said Zurakowski. Notably Mr. Zurakowski is a member of Mensa International, the high IQ society. He says his long career was rewarding because he chose to find purpose in each days accomplishments. “If you don’t get your pleasure out of your work, you are never going to know what pleasure is. If you think you are not having fun, start thinking differently,” he said. In his retirement he is looking forward to focusing on his woodworking hobby and spending time with family. 1868

The small mountain town of Leadville, Colorado has its own one-man welcome wagon. He’s volunteered his own time for four years, greeting those driving through, and how he does it captures everyone’s eye. “My name is Jim Duke, and I am the official town greeter,” he says. He wears a long tail coat, a top hat and sports an impressive gray beard. “I go out and meet people on the street, and welcome them into town,” Duke says. “I let them know they’re family.”Duke says he dresses up as someone would back in the 1800s, to give more character to the town. “Really, my favorite part about doing all of this is to bring a smile to people’s faces,” the greeter says. “I’m not just some nut out here. I love the town. I was the unofficial town greeter, until the mayor named me the official greeter three years ago.”Duke said he does this because he wants people to love the town and see what he sees. “I see beauty, I see the people and I see love in this town,” Duke says. In a world filled with screens, there seems to be a lot of disconnect among each other. Duke believes just smiling and saying hi to one another can help build that bridge between each other that we often forget can exist. One man was able to remember the ratio of pi up to 70,000 decimal places. Rajveer Meena accomplished the feat on March 21, 2015 while wearing a blindfold. According to Five-Thirty-Eight, it took a Dell computer nearly 105 days of computation to come up with the large number of digits. This is compared to just 2,000 known digits of pi in the mid-20th century. So how does one remember so many digits? Savant Daniel Tammet, who is able to remember pi's calculation to more than 20,000 digits, told David Letterman, "What I am doing is visualizing numbers." he said. "When you look at a number, you just see the numbers four and three. When I am looking at numbers, I am seeing different colors and shapes and textures. It is called 'synesthesia.' My brain is working in such a way I am looking and also experiencing color. It is two senses combined. "Having a more exact number of pi helps scientists at NASA conduct more precise experiments and calculations. Having more exact figures helps lend precision to projects such as landing rovers on Mars, sending spacecraft into deep space or tracking the movement of asteroids.
