Nearly 7 in 10 Americans are motivated to improve their health during the pandemic, according to a new poll.Researchers with MDVIP and Ipsos conducted the survey including Americans age 35 and older on July 9 and released their findings this week.Some of the results confirm what many of us are feeling: half of respondents said they feel more stressed, anxious and depressed than before the pandemic, and one in three said they have developed an unhealthy habit, such as overeating, excessive drinking or not exercising.It seems the global pandemic is also spurring some positive trends, as Americans reexamine their health and habits.The data found that 69 percent of participants said the pandemic had motivated them to be healthier. More than 40 percent of attendees at an overnight summer camp became infected with Covid-19 within days before officials shut it down, according to the CDC.Local media reports it was a YMCA camp near a lake in Rabun County, Georgia.More than 260 staff and campers tested positive for the coronavirus, out of a total 597 people who were at the camp sometime between when it opened and when it closed in mid-June. Of the 260 who tested positive, 231 were campers aged 6 to 17 years old.In their report published Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says camp officials followed most of their recommended safety protocols. They say the two measures not implemented were cloth masks for campers and opening windows and doors for increased ventilation in buildings. Masks were required for staff members.The camp held orientation for staff members and trainees between June 17 to 21, then were joined by hundreds of kids on June 21 for a week-long camp session.On June 23, a teen staff member left the camp after developing chills the night before. They tested positive for Covid-19, and the camp began sending kids home on June 24. The entire camp was closed June 27.The camp was adhering to Georgia’s Executive Order that allowed overnight camps and required negative coronavirus tests less than 11 days before attending.“These findings demonstrate that SARS-CoV-2 spread efficiently in a youth-centric overnight setting, resulting in high attack rates among persons in all age groups, despite efforts by camp officials to implement most recommended strategies to prevent transmission,” says the CDC report on this outbreak.From the 136 cases where the CDC was able to gather symptom data, about 26 percent of those who tested positive for coronavirus had no symptoms at the time. 1804

More than 170 rescue workers are trying to free 18 coal miners trapped in a tunnel in China's eastern Shandong province, according to state broadcaster CCTV.The miners were trapped after a rock burst at the Longyun Coal Mining Company in Yuncheng County at around 11 p.m. (10 a.m EST) on Saturday.The incident destroyed part of a water drainage tunnel in the coal mine, killing two and trapping another 20 workers, the official Xinhua news agency reported.Authorities say one miner was rescued Monday.Rock burst accidents are often caused by fractures in rocks due to mining.This story is developing -- more updates to come. 632

Months of debate have transitioned into action as school districts across the country welcome students back for the 2020-2021 school year, whether online or in-person.In Iowa, however, the debate over how to approach the topic has transitioned to the court system.In July, Gov. Kim Reynolds announced a new mandate at a press conference requiring school districts teach at least 50 percent of its curriculum in-person. She also said school districts would only be able to move to an online-only curriculum if the COVID-19 positivity rate in that region reached 15 percent or higher.It is one of the highest positivity rate thresholds in the country.The CDC has used the positivity rate, or percentage of COVID-19 tests that return a positive result, as a barometer of how the coronavirus is circulating across the country. Below 10 percent is indicative of the shrinking rate of transmission.When it came out with school guidelines, the CDC recommended schools only reopen to in-person learning if the positivity rate was 5 percent or below.For comparison, New York City has said kids can’t go back to school until the positivity rate is under 3 percent. Arizona has set its bar at 7 percent, and even the surgeon general has said schools nationwide shouldn’t consider returning to in-person learning unless the positivity rate is under 10 percent.“I look at my husband who has to go teach in high school and look at the risks that presents to him. I have to look at my kids who are missing out on in-person school,” said Lisa Williams, a school board member in Iowa City.Recently, the Iowa City Community School District joined in on a lawsuit filed against the state that claims the governor is violating the state constitution by not looking out for the well-being of Iowans.“It’s troubling,” said Williams. “I think kids need to be in school.
