FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Caleb Lowman says he was forced to use his shotgun on his neighbor's three dogs when they escaped their cage and began attacking his goats. “When I came out, I had the shotgun with me with the hopes it wouldn’t have to be used,” Lowman said. Lowman says this isn't the first time the dogs have gotten out and been aggressive. On last Monday, the dogs got out of their fence and attacked the goats in his yard. Photos show the goats suffered bite marks up and down their neck and legs.However, one of the dogs' owners, Jake Hutto, claims his pets have never been aggressive. “I don’t understand how it’s possible to shoot three dogs in the head, to blow their face off," Hutto said.Lowman's family called Animal Control after last week's incident and says they safely returned all three dogs to the neighbors. Five days later, Lowman says it happened again — this time in front of his 13-year-old daughter, Chloe. “I had to go outside and watch basically my babies be attacked by dogs," said Chloe. Lowman says despite his family's efforts, the dogs killed two of the goats. That's when he pulled out his shotgun and killed all three dogs. Hutto came home to find that Animal Control had left his pets in three large trash bags.“There’s nothing more you can do, nothing’s going to bring them back,” Hutto said. Records show several citations had been issued from Animal Control to the dog owners' household. But with two goats and three dogs now gone, Lowman says this isn't what he wanted. "This time it was our goats, Monday it was our goats; if we let that happen again that could have been my children," he said. "It didn’t need to be this way if they just secured their dogs."A spokesperson for Animal Control says this is an active investigation. Lowman claims when he put in his final statement today at Animal Control, he was told two citations would be issued against the dog owners. He says the citations are for dogs menacing and harassing livestock and running at large.  2160

For the first time, the Oxford English Dictionary has released several words for its annual "Word of the Year" because it's 2020. With everything that has happened this year, the dictionary said it selected words that saw significant spikes in searches during certain months.On Monday, the dictionary released its "Words of an Unprecedented Year" report saying that 2020 was "not a year that could neatly be accommodated in one single "word of the year," so they came up with words that saw spikes in searches during certain months."For January, the word was "bushfire" because of Australia's worst bushfire season on record."Impeachment" also was influential in January because that's when President Donald Trump's impeachment trial began.In February, "acquittal" peaked since that's when President Trump's impeachment trial ended.In March, words about the coronavirus pandemic dominated, like "COVID-19," "lockdown," "social distancing," and "reopening."In June, it was the phrase "Black Lives Matter."For August, it was "mail-in" because of the U.S. election and "Belarusian" because of the re-election of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.In September, it was "moonshot," which was the name of the United Kingdom's government COVID testing program.And in October, "superspreader" spiked due to the spread of COVID-19 cases within the White House and "net-zero," which pertains to China President Xi Jinping pledging the country would be carbon neutral by 2060. 1480

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A Lee County deputy is starting an incredible journey.  He will run nearly 400 miles from Lee County to Tallahassee in honor of fallen officers.Sgt. Sammy Gonzalez said this will be a grueling and difficult run, but it’s not impossible.  He has been with the sheriff’s office for 10 years now and said he's doing this run to help families of fallen officers."I've been running nonstop, it's almost a year for preparation for this," he said.Thursday morning, Gonzalez begins his 390-mile journey from Fort Myers to Tallahassee in the next 8-9 days.“It’s going to be an emotional finish. I can't even explain what it's going to be like when I arrive at the state capitol."Back in 2005, Sgt Gonzalez had a good friend killed in the line of duty.  "I tell people I can't bring back these fallen officers back, but what I'm doing is I'm raising money and awareness for those families who are left behind," he said. So far, he's raised ,000 for the charity Concerns of Police Survivors, and he hopes to raise ,000 more by the time he gets to the state capitol."Last year, 135 officers died in the United States," he said. "That's 135 too many."The first day, Gonzalez will run about 40 miles. He said they've planned it out every step of the way.  "I'm staying in an RV, actually," he said. "I have a 3-person team from the sheriff’s office that will be with me the entire trip."My only concern is the heat," he said. I've ran in hot conditions in the past, and it can play tricks on the mind."He will get to Tallahassee just in time for the state's annual memorial that honors and celebrates lives lost in the line of duty.Sgt. For anyone who is still deciding whether to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends, there's an interactive map created by a team of researchers that can help with that decision.The interactive map, created by professors at the Georgia Institute of Technology, shows the likelihood that at least one person would test positive for COVID-19 when gathering with a group of 10 or more people in a given area.The map includes data for every U.S. county and shows the risk for infection using data of recent COVID-19 cases across the country.The data depends on the size and location of the gathering. For example, for a gathering of people in Fayette County, Kentucky, the likelihood that at least one person would test positive for COVID-19 is:28% for a group of 10 people39% for a group of 15 people48% for a group of 20 people56% for a group of 25 people81% for s group of 50 people.Nearly 40% of people say they will likely attend a Thanksgiving gathering with 10 or more people despite the risk of catching COVID-19, according to a recent survey by Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center.Another survey of parents nationwide found nearly a third say the benefits of gathering with extended family for the holidays are worth the risk of spreading or getting the coronavirus. The survey, conducted by the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in partnership with the University of Michigan, says almost 3-in-5 plan to see extended family in person.Experts at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say postponing travel and staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others this year. FORT HOOD, Texas —The family of missing Fort Hood soldier Vanessa Guillen met with officials from the Army base and the Criminal Investigation Command (CID) Tuesday and said foul play is suspected in the woman's disappearance.Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia and an official with the League of United Latin American Citizens accompanied the family.Vanessa's mother spoke and said in Spanish that while she's grateful Army officials invited them for an update today, she felt sick visiting Fort Hood. She says the Army took too long to search for her daughter.She says she asked Fort Hood to shut down the base and look for Vanessa as soon as she went missing and they didn't do it."I told them to search barrack by barrack and they never did it. I seek justice, that they respect Vanessa as a soldier, as someone who is serving this country," said her mother. She demands the people on base are investigated, especially the sergeant who she says her daughter said was sexually harassing her."I told them I want her alive. She entered alive," said the mother."If my daughter appears dead, close this base immediately," her mother said while crying. "I want her alive, for the love of God. I need my daughter with me. She is my life. That's why I'm fighting until they bring her back and the people who are responsible pay.""Investigate from the top to the bottom, everyone is responsible."Garcia said Fort Hood officials said they are convinced foul play is involved at this point and the criminal investigation is ongoing.The 3rd Cavalry Regiment commander, Col. Ralph Overland, has appointed an investigating team led by a senior investigating officer to conduct a commander’s investigation into allegations that Vanessa Guillen was sexually harassed.Congresswoman Garcia says there are discrepancies about when Fort Hood officials say they started searching for Vanessa and when the family tried to contact the base.Congresswoman Garcia and the Guillen family's lawyer also said the Army told the family the base has regular check-ins through the day. The sergeant who checked their barracks at some point after she went missing reported that Vanessa was there but later admitted he did not actually see her."We gotta remember this is a story about a family who is hurting," said Garcia. "We are dealing with a tragedy."Mayra Guillen, Vanessa's older sister, said she hopes the community keeps searching for Vanessa.The 20-year-old soldier was reported missing from Fort Hood on April 22.
