SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A measure that would increase San Diego's hotel tax is heading to the ballot on March 3 and a recent poll shows how San Diegans feel about Measure C. Measure C would increase San Diego’s hotel visitor tax from 10.5 percent to 11.75, 12.75 and 13.75 percent depending on hotel location through at least 2061.The money would go toward expanding the convention center, funding homelessness programs and fixing San Diego roads. According to the “Yes on C” campaign, the measure would create 7 million for homeless programs in the first five years of the initiative. The campaign also says the measure would create 7,000 jobs. The measure requires two-thirds supermajority to pass. A 10News-San Diego Union-Tribune poll shows that, as of February, 61 percent support the measure while 21 percent are opposed and 18 percent are undecided. “A majority of San Diegans are uniting behind Measure C because it is straight forward in its approach to tackling the city’s most pressing issues with a tax on tourists, not San Diegans," said Greg Block, a spokesman for the Measure C campaign. "People already know Measure C will help with homelessness, street repair and job creation by expanding of the Convention Center."Michael McConnell, an advocate for the homeless, is leading the opposition and warns the measure has “loopholes and risks.”"They are hiding up to Billion in bonds with no guarantee that money will be spent the right way," he said in a statement. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Navy sailor appeared in court Tuesday after authorities say he stole 20 hand grenades from a San Diego-based guided missile destroyer.Authorities say Gunner’s Mate Second Class Aaron Booker was taken into custody in Illinois.According to court documents, personnel assigned to the USS Pinckney discovered that 20 grenades disappeared from their storage crates in 2017.In April of 2017, an off-duty law enforcement officer noticed a black backpack leaning against a guardrail on the side of the road along Interstate 15 in northwest Arizona.The bag was standard military issue with “GM2 BOOKER” handwritten on a tag inside the bag. The bag contained 18 of the grenades that were missing from the USS Pinckney.According to authorities, law enforcement is still searching for the two missing grenades.The complaint states that Booker acknowledged to investigators that he drove the same route before reporting to his duty station in March.“A backpack full of grenades on the side of the road is obviously extremely dangerous and could have had resulted in injuries or death,” said U.S. Attorney Adam L. Braverman said. “The theft of explosives is a very serious offense, particularly if it is carried out by an insider with access to military weapons and secrets.”Booker will appear for a detention hearing before being transferred to San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A newly-released poll shows key San Diego County races are undecided ahead of the June 5 primary election.Many of the 1,100 voters questioned in the scientific 10News/Union-Tribune poll showed no clear preference for non-partisan positions including District Attorney, Sheriff, and County Assessor.DISTRICT ATTORNEYSummer Stephan, the interim San Diego County District Attorney, held 35 percent of the vote to Genevieve Jones-Wright’s 22 percent. Stephan led among Republicans, white voters, and those over 35 years old. Jones-Wright led among Democrats, and Latino and younger voters. 43 percent of voters were undecided in the race.Stephan was appointed by the Board of Supervisors last year to fill the remainder for Bonnie Dumanis’ term. Jones-Wright is a Deputy Public Defender. The two have met in several public forums.  SAN DIEGO COUNTY SHERIFFIncumbent Sheriff Bill Gore led Sheriff’s Department commander Dave Meyers by 10 percent in the poll. However, 33 percent of voters were undecided.Gore had stronger support from senior citizens, white voters and conservatives.  COUNTY ASSESSOR/RECORDER/COUNTY CLERKThe countywide election pitting incumbent Ernest Dronenburg Jr. against ethics attorney Matt Strabone shows voters were essentially tied, with a 6.3 percent margin of error. Dronenburg held 20 percent of the vote to Strabone’s 17 percent.An overwhelming 63 percent of voters were undecided.  VOTER BREAKDOWN84 percent of those surveyed said they were registered to vote in California. 14 percent were not, and 2 percent were not sure.About half of San Diegans said they would definitely vote in the June 5 election. About a fourth said they would likely vote. A combined 11 percent said they were unlikely or certain not to vote.According to the Registrar of Voters, 75 percent of those eligible to vote in the county are registered. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A sailboat caught fire Sunday around 2:45 p.m. at Shelter Cove Marina, witnesses say a lithium battery in the navigation panel started the blaze."Saw the smoke, thought it was a barbecue then the kids started screaming on the dock and saw the black smoke and knew it was time to react," Boater and Witness Charlie Colson said. He said he grabbed a hose and was helping the father who was on the boat when the fire started. Getting a boat fire put out quickly is crucial, Witness and Boater Murad Abel said. "There's a lot of electrical equipment, you have batteries, you have fuel, propane, it's all probably within 10 feet of each other," he said.Colson said they had it under control by the time firefighters made it to the scene. "The nine minutes probably seemed like 27 to me, because I was putting the fire out, and I wanted some help, I wanted a professional there," He said chuckling.He said the family had just moved onto the boat last week. Both confirmed the family has a special needs son, adored by the community. "You could literally come back 2 hours later and he's still fishing trying to get fish off the back of the boat, so he's very diligent in that," Abel said.They're hoping insurance covers the damage. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new poll shows that a majority of San Diegans support stricter gun laws in the U.S.A Survey USA poll released Sunday morning shows that 71 percent of those asked in San Diego support stricter gun laws while 18 percent say they oppose tighter gun restrictions.Meanwhile, 32 percent of those asked say even private gun ownership makes the country less safe while 29 percent says it makes no difference.Of those asked about safety, 76 percent of San Diegans say they worry their child could be a victim of a school shooting.RELATED: San Diegans rally for gun control in March for Our Lives eventsWhile 73 percent of people polled say they don’t know anyone who’s ever been a victim of gun violence, 27 percent of those polled say they worry a great deal about being a victim of a shooting.As far as a possible solution, 77 percent of people polled say Congress needs to do more to address gun violence.
