SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Symphony has overcome the last major obstacle to a permanent home along San Diego's waterfront.The Port of San Diego's Board of Commissioners has granted a 15-year lease for the Symphony's Bayside Performance Park project. The project will see the construction of a seashell-shaped concert venue at Embarcadero Marina Park South, as well as various improvements to the surrounding park.The lease also includes four options allowing the Symphony to extend their lease up to 50 years.The San Diego Symphony will invest a minimum of million toward those improvements, including 66 new restrooms, expansion of the current promenade, and improvements to the park's existing basketball courts and exercise equipment.RELATED: Margaritaville Island Resort coming to San Diego“We’re confident concert-goers will love the improved access and state-of-the art stage and sound system, and bayfront visitors will love the new and improved park,” said Board Chairman Garry Bonelli.The Symphony could begin construction of the venue as soon as September. Since 2004, the Symphony has had to assemble and disassemble its temporary venue for its Bayside Summer Nights concert series. The permanent concert stage will also provide four free public events each year."Our hope is that it will become a coastal destination for everyone, and an iconic landmark for the region and its coastline," said Martha Gilmer, San Diego Symphony CEO.The park's landscape will also change, with the Symphony adding a sloped lawn with temporary seating open to the public during non-event hours. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Padres plan to walk into the 2021 season with a World Series pitcher on the roster, trading for Tampa Bay Rays ace Blake Snell.The deal, reported by The Athletic and ESPN, would see Snell head to San Diego in exchange for top pitching prospect Luis Pati?o, catcher Francisco Mejía, pitcher Cole Wilcox, and catcher Blake Hunt.The deal will be finalized pending a medical review, the outlets report. The addition of Snell to San Diego will help the team build a formidable starting pitching rotation heading into 2021, after adding Cleveland ace Mike Clevinger last season. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Sheriff's Department is making it easier for residents to receive — at times, indiscernible — messages issued by the department's helicopters.The free service will allow residents to receive a text of the message being issued by deputies by texting "Hello" to 858-866-4356 (HELO). Typically, the department uses its ASTREA helicopter loudspeakers to announce searches for missing persons or suspects, as well as during emergency situations like SWAT standoffs, disasters, shelter in place advisories, or crowd management.But, at times, though messages may be difficult to understand.The service is not automated, meaning users will have to send a text when they want to receive the message being issued in their area. And while the service is free from the department, standard text messaging rates may apply depending on phone plans.The department's text service only applies to SDSO patrol areas and is separate from the San Diego Police Department, which began issuing their helicopter alerts separately on the Nextdoor app and Twitter in 2015."If there is more than one active broadcast at any given time, you have the option to choose the message that impacts your location.
