SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Starting Monday, San Diego County residents will be able to cast their ballots early for the Nov. 3 election.The San Diego County Registrar of Voters office in Kearny Mesa, located at 5600 Overland Ave., will be open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. to allow San Diegans to vote early.Due to coronavirus-related health and safety restrictions, voters must wear a mask and practice social distancing. There’s going to be a lot of changes in the next year or two,” Milburn told ABC 10News.Sisco added, “I had to come and vote. To be honest, I felt bad I didn’t start voting until Obama came into office. I should have been voting even back then.”Both decided to come early concerned about having to wait in long lines which election officials want people to be mindful of. Officials believe this election will bring out the county’s highest voter turnout to date.The San Diego County Democratic Party came to the Registrar of Voters to promote early voting, saying it will speed up the results.Will Rodriguez-Kennedy, the Chair of the San Diego Democratic Party, said, “If you want to have the count and not be waiting election night … The more people that vote early the better for everyone, the results will come in sooner.”In a statement sent to ABC 10News, the county’s Republican Party said they are “encouraging Republicans to vote early.”Meanwhile, officials said ballots are being mailed out on Monday to the 1.9 million registered voters in San Diego County.This summer, citing restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, state officials said all registered California voters would receive mail-in ballots. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Senior citizens in Chula Vista lit up the runway at St. Paul's Plaza, a senior living community.It was the center's first fashion show and eight residents were transformed into models. Each had makeup, hair, and wardrobe provided thanks to Macy's. “Today’s fashion show is all about friendships," said Mary Johnson with the community outreach team. "Friendships are just as important as taking good care of yourself, exercising, and good nutrition. As we get older friendships get even more important."Ladies who modeled said the day made them feel special and confident. “A lot of people when they get to be our age don’t want to do anything different. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University officials announced Monday plans for healing circles after reports of several people calling out racial slurs toward the Black Resource Center on campus. A racially diverse group of men was in a vehicle Friday when they yelled slurs at the building on Lindo Paseo, a witness told 10News. “SDSU does not tolerate instances of hatred, racism or discrimination,” said university President Adela de la Torre, interim Vice President for Student Affairs Christy Samarkos, and Chief Diversity Officer J. Luke Wood in a statement. “At SDSU, diversity and inclusion are core values we uphold, and the university is deeply committed to supporting a campus climate and environment that is welcoming and safe, no matter a person’s background or experience. We do not accept hate-driven acts.” Campus officials organized three healing circles to be held on campus this week. Counseling and psychological services team members are also available. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several San Diego County schools are being honored as part of the 2020 California Distinguished Schools Award Program. The program recognizes schools based on performance and progress on state indicators. Those indicators include test scores, suspension rates and conditions and climate, according to the State Superintendent. Schools hold their titles for two years because elementary schools and middle and high schools are recognized on alternate years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Scripps Health has created a new way to celebrate people who donate a kidney. Hundreds of hospital staff lined the hallways to cheer for and high-five a donor as they’re wheeled into surgery. Hayley Gibbons got to experience the Hero Walk. "I don't think I could've gotten into the operating room on a bigger high. There's no way you could've doubted that you wanted to save someone after going down that hall,” Gibbons said. Gibbons underwent surgery and is doing well. She says she’s excited to give someone a second chance at life even if she never gets to meet that person. 606
