KUNMING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- At least 14 people were injured and more than 7,300 houses damaged in an earthquake that jolted Yunnan and Sichuan provinces in southwest China Sunday.The earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale occurred at 8:53 a.m., hitting an area bordering the two provinces.The epicenter, with a depth of about 10 kilometers, was located at 27.1 degrees north latitude and 102.9 degrees longitude, according to the earthquake network center in Sichuan.Thirteen people were injured in the latest earthquake, and 7,354 houses were destroyed in the quake, including 122 houses being toppled, plus road cave-ins in Qiaojia County of Yunnan, according to Zhou Yingbin, deputy head of the county government.Another person was slightly injured in Ningnan County of Sichuan, local officials said, who added that nobody was reported dead or missing in the quake.

DALIAN, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Sunday called on the young in Russia and China to pass on the friendship forged during World War II.Medvedev made the call in a meeting Sunday morning with more than 20 veteran Chinese and Russian soldiers who participated in China's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1937-1945), part of WWII.The Russian leader, who arrived in the northeast China's port city of Dalian Sunday morning, first laid flowers at a monument commemorating Soviet Union war martyrs.In the following meeting with Chinese and Russian veterans, Medvedev said Russians and Chinese forged profound friendship in their joint fight against the Nazis, and such friendship constituted the solid foundation for the relationship between the two countries.The Russian President thanked Russian and Chinese veterans for their contributions to peace.He also thanked China for renovating the memorial, which was one of more than 70 memorials commemorating Soviet Union war martyrs throughout China. All those memorials had been refurbished to mark the 65th anniversary of the victory of WWII.Dalian was the first stop of Medvedev's three-day visit to China. This was also Medvedev's second state visit to the country since he assumed presidency in May 2008.Later Sunday, Medvedev flew to Beijing to continue his state visit to China.During his stay in Beijing, Medvedev will hold talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao and call on other Chinese leaders, including top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao.Medvedev will also travel to east China's metropolis of Shanghai, where, on the next day, he will meet with Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping and attend events marking the Russia Day at the ongoing World Expo, which runs from May 1 to Oct. 31.
BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying said Tuesday Premier Wen Jiabao's Europe trip aims to promote the two sides' comprehensive strategic relationship.Fu made the remarks at a press briefing at which she and Vice Foreign Minister Zhai Jun briefed the press about Wen's upcoming visit to Europe.Wen will pay an official visit to Greece, Belgium, Italy and Turkey from Oct. 2 to 9 at the invitations of Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.Wen will attend the eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) and the 13th China-European Union (EU) summit from Oct. 4 to 6 as guest of European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.The Greece visit is the first by a Chinese premier in 24 years. During his stay, Wen will meet George Papandreou and discuss China-Greece relations. The two leaders will also witness the signing of several cooperation agreements. Wen will also deliver a speech in the Greek parliament on China-Greece relations and China-EU relations."Coping with the financial crisis will be an important topic for talks between Wen and Greek leaders. We have a positive attitude about the measures taken by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund. We have noticed that the Greek government has adopted measures which have been effective. We hope Greece will recover soon from the difficulties," Fu said.Speaking highly of the role Belgium has played in promoting China-EU relations during its rotating presidency, Fu said China-EU relations will be on the top agenda of Wen's meeting with Belgian leaders.Wen will hold talks with Yves Leterme and meet King Albert II.
