SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A free course is helping people with brain injuries rebuild their sense of self. Offered at San Diego Continuing Education (SDCE), the Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) class is a noncredit/non-fee course. It supports people recovering from ABIs like brain trauma, stroke/aneurysm, brain tumor, brain infection, and anoxia. SDCE's ABI curriculum equips students with the tools needed to achieve daily tasks and long-term goals to support their transition back into career and education. Classes emphasize rebuilding a sense of self through cognitive retraining, personal development, communication, academic skills, vocational exploration, coping strategies, creativity development, and advocacy awareness.For traumatic brain injury survivors like Marine Corps veteran Mario Sanders, the program has been lifechanging."No one is ever prepared for life with a brain injury, this program definitely gave me the strategies, the techniques; it made me able to cope with it, it made me able to live with it," said Sanders. The Camp Pendleton Marine was in a severe car accident in 2016. He was hospitalized for six months and had to re-learn how to walk again."One minute I'm being a Marine, the next I'm in the hospital confused and dazed, I couldn't walk, I had no idea what happened," said Sanders. Today he suffers from memory problems and weakness on his left side, but Sanders is far more accepting of his injury."Life with a brain injury is hard, but it's not impossible."Sanders is dually enrolled at San Diego Miramar College and will complete an Associate in Arts in Kinesiology for Transfer Degree. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A frustrated neighborhood in Sabre Springs is preparing to fight back amid a string of car break-ins.Bill Powers owns a townhouse just off Poway Road where Sabre Springs meets Poway. A year ago, he says the reports on social media of car prowlers started to climb."Anger and frustration that it's happening right on my back doorstep," said Powers.An idea was born from that frustration.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhood"I think the use of a bait car would be really helpful," said Powers.He recently proposed the idea online and almost immediately, someone already volunteered their old car.Powers says the bait will be something like a used laptop, placed in plain view.  He'll pitch in some of the cameras, including GoPro cameras, to be mounted on homes and windows."Our goal is to get decent footage of the act and share it with proper authorities," said Powers.Powers is also looking for help."I have volunteers but definitely need more," said Powers.He's hoping for neighbors willing to take a shift watching the car. Powers tells 10News the volunteers will be following an "Observe and Report" to police or deputies protocol. Powers hopes to have the bait car up and running in the next few months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 9-year old in Ocean Beach is using his lemonade stand to help others.Dylan Rodriguez sets up his lemonade stand on Bacon Street every Wednesday near the OB Farmer's Market. Initially, he wanted to make some money for himself."He wanted to raise a 0 bill," says his mother, Holly Raines.But after accomplishing that goal, his efforts became more altruistic."It feels nice helping somebody out, because, if I was in that position, I would like a lot of help too," says Dylan.Over the past three years, he's used some of the money from the lemonade stand to pay for a handful of charitable projects. He's given backpacks of supplies to the homeless, bought art supplies for kids at Rady's Childrens Hospital and bought holiday presents for refugee families."It makes me satisfied knowing that he's got a giant heart," says Raines.Recently, Dylan's giving has become more personal. One of his friends was diagnosed with a form of Muscular Dystrophy. Dylan decided to help with payments for his treatments."He needs a lot of money for each treatment," says Dylan. "It's, like, ,000 each time. So I'm trying to raise money for him."In June, Dylan was able to give his friend 0. He says he'll keep giving his lemonade money to his friend indefinitely."I'd like to give him ,000," says Dylan. "I don't know if I can get that much money, but I'm hoping to make a lot of money for him." 1417

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - 23 people were injured Saturday night when a structure collapsed at an indoor parkour center in Barrio Logan.21 of them were children. Two were adults, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.The collapse happened about 8 p.m. at Vault PK, a parkour center on Main St. and Sigsbee. Children who were above and below the structure were hurt.The injuries ranged from minor to moderate.Cory Brizendine, a parent, estimates there were about 50 kids there. They were called up to the platform for pizza."Once the majority of kids got up there the whole platform collapsed," he said.Shannon O'Brien was among the adults on the platform. "It was scary," she said.  She said it was a place parents sit to watch their kids, and she thought it seemed stable.  831

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A dream became reality for a San Diego woman, but not in a good way. Jenna Evans says she swallowed her engagement ring in her sleep.Tuesday night, Evans dreamed that she and her fiance, Bobby, were facing off with "bad guys" on a high-speed train. During the struggle, Bobby told Evans that she had to swallow her engagement ring to protect it. So she did. Not just in her dream, but in real life. She woke to find the ring clean off her finger. "When I woke up and it was not on my hand, I knew exactly where it was," Evans said. "It was in my stomach."The next morning, Evans and her future husband went to Urgent Care, where they saw her X-rays. Her ring was clearly nestled right in her stomach.A gastroenterologist, however, suggested it would not be best to let nature run its course. Doctors recommended an upper endoscopy to remove her beloved bling."I was really happy because I don't know if I can look at it and appreciate it in the same way, if I had to search for it," Evans chuckled.At this point, Evans says she could feel the ring in her stomach and it was starting to become painful.Doctors safely removed the ring from her intestines and returned the jewelry to Evans — well, to Bobby for safe keeping, at least. Bobby eventually gave Evans her ring back."I feel very grateful that I got it back, and that this is a happy and funny story," Evans said. It was a crazy adventure that gave new meaning to "A Sparkling bride, inside and out."She says she now takes the ring off when going to sleep.The couple will get married in Evans' home state of Texas, hopefully with the ring in hand, next May. 1641
