SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County's recovering job market will take a hit from the new wave of coronavirus-related restrictions that went into effect this week, SANDAG's chief economist said Thursday. The region's jobless rate had been falling from a peak of 25% in early May to 14.3% in late June, the San Diego Association of Governments reported Thursday. However, on July 6, new restrictions went into effect to slow the spread of COVID 19. Restaurants and several other public-facing businesses were forced to end indoor service, while bars that don't serve food were required to close. That sent people who had returned to work back to seeking unemployment."Until there's a vaccine in place, it's going to be a very bumpy ride," said Ray Major, SANDAG's chief economist. "It's going to be up and down. There will be times probably where they say OK we can start opening up again, and then for some reason the health numbers start to become worse, and so the economy is going to be impacted again."At Little Italy's Cloak and Petal restaurant, managing partner Cesar Vallin said only about half of the restaurant's 40 workers have been brought back. He said the restaurant changed its menu and moved service outside, but the lower capacity is hitting revenue. "Let's just face it, this could happen two or three more times by end of the year," Vallin said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County is now able to test for novel coronavirus without needing to send samples to the CDC, the Health and Human Services Agency announced Thursday. The County Public Health Lab can now run up to 40 tests at once. The lab is one of dozens certified by the CDC throughout the U.S. “This is great news for San Diego County and will help with our ongoing efforts to contain COVID-19,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “Being able to test locally means that when we have patients under investigation, we can more rapidly remove unneeded restrictions from those without infection. Results for potential cases of COVID-19 will now be available within 24 to 48 hours, health officials say. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego police are investigating reports of a suspicious package near a downtown courthouse Tuesday.A package was discovered outside the courthouse at the corner of Union and W. B Streets just before 12 p.m., according to San Diego Fire-Rescue. Out of an abundance of caution, the area was secured and bomb arson investigators were called.Court proceedings were delayed for a short period of time.Upon further investigation, authorities found that the package contained an empty metal security box.
