WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S., Canada, and Mexico have agreed to keep their shared borders closed to non-essential traffic until at least late August because of COVID-19. Acting U.S. Department of Homeland Security Chad Wolf announced the agreement Thursday. He said restrictions on cross-border traffic that have been in place since March have helped slow the spread of the coronavirus. Canada Prime Minister also made the announcement during a news conference on Parliament Hill. The extension agreed to by the three countries would keep the border closed until Aug. 21. The partial closure restricts crossing to commercial traffic, people returning to their home country and other travel deemed essential. It prohibits people from traveling between the countries for tourism or shopping. 794

We know many of you have questions about the upcoming election. Today, we’ll be joined by Darrell West, from The Brookings Institute. He’ll join us to talk about his research on the vote-by-mail process across the country, how it works, and if it increases election fraud. You can join us at 9:30 a.m. for the conversation right here on Facebook 353

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Election Day is less than 50 days away, but results from the election could take a lot longer. That's because a record number of voters are voting by mail this election and different states have different rules regarding when those ballots can be opened and processed. Absentee ballots or mail-in ballots generally take a lot longer to count compared to in-person voting machines, because ballots need to be opened and scanned. For instance, in the crucial swing states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, ballots can't be opened until Election Day. That differs from other states, like Colorado, which can open ballots as they come into election offices. That means it will take election officials in those swing states a herculean effort to process and scan ballots to get accurate results by the end of election night. Each state is facing either pending legislation at their State Capitol or various lawsuits asking the rules be changed. Those aren't the only reasons results may be delayed. In many states, like North Carolina, Georgia, Nevada and Minnesota, ballots are allowed to be postmarked on Election Day. That means it may take a few days to arrive to an election office. "I think we are looking at five to seven days to roughly a week," said Ted Trimpa, a political consultant. "The challenge is you are going to have so many states doing mail-in ballots that have never done mail ballots," Trimpa said. And it may not just be swing states that are the issue. In New York, a state that will almost certainty vote Democrat, primary results from earlier this year took four weeks in some cases. Henry Rosoff, a political reporter with WPIX in New York City, explained New York law requires 48 hours to pass after the election before absentee ballots can be counted. "We are not going to even begin to count half of our votes until 48 hours after Election Day," Rosoff said. "If we were a swing state, it would seem absolutely outrageous," Rosoff said. 1994

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President-elect Joe Biden is nominating the education commissioner in Connecticut to serve as secretary of the Department of Education. After initial reports, Biden confirmed Tuesday that he would like Miguel Cardona to take over the role that Secretary Betsy DeVos has held since President Donald Trump took office in 2017.Watch Biden introduce Cardona below:Cardona has served as his state’s commissioner of education since August 2019. Before that, he served as assistant superintendent for teaching and learning in Meriden, according to Connecticut State Colleges and Universities. The 45-year-old began his career as an elementary school teacher and served as a school principal for 10 years. He also taught for four years as an adjunct professor at the University of Connecticut in the Department of Educational Leadership.Cardona is a low-profile candidate who The Washington Post says has pushed to reopen schools and hasn’t been aligned with any particular side in recent education policy battles. When schools moved to remote learning this year, The Associated Press reports Cardona hurried to deliver more than 100,000 laptops to students across The Constitution State. In his announcement, Biden said Cardona will lead the administration’s efforts to invest in all students, support educators, and make reopening schools safely a national priority. They hope to safely reopen the majority of classrooms within the first 100 days of Biden’s term.Biden says Cardona will strive to eliminate long-standing inequities and close racial and socioeconomic opportunity gaps — as well as expand access to community colleges, training and public four-year colleges and universities to improve student success and grow a stronger middle class.Cardona’s parents are from Puerto Rico. If confirmed by the Senate, he would be another diverse member of the administration’s Cabinet, which Biden has promised will be the most diverse in U.S. history.Biden issued this statement about Cardona: 2012

We're now entering peak back-to-school shopping season, but this is turning out to be a school shopping season like none ever before. In the year of the pandemic, many parents are holding off, unsure their children will even set foot in their schools this fall.In normal years, Target, Staples and other stores would be running big back-to-school campaigns by now. Stores would be stocked with gym shoes, white shirts, notebooks, and Clorox wipes. (Remember Clorox wipes? Have you seen any for sale in four months?)But these are not normal times. With many schools already planning for online learning this September, there's no need to buy lots of new school clothing or even backpacks.Other schools are holding off announcing any plans, which means teachers cannot come up with lists of required items yet.Why shopping could still be strongIt turns out learning at home may actually boost sales figures this year, according to the National Retail Federation. It says parents will be buying more laptop PCs and iPads then ever before. With many students learning at home even just part time, demand is soaring for new laptops to improve the Zoom call experience. The result is that the retail group predicts shopping could be 3-5% higher than last year, with more parents than ever dropping 0 to ,000 on a computer. Two kids? Double it.But from the doesn't that stink file, the bad news is for brick-and-mortar retailers. The Retail Federation says online sales will soar this school year, as families avoid going to the mall.About 45% of shoppers say they plan to do more online shopping this year than they did a year ago, which was already a strong year for online sales. That means if you like to browse the mall for school shopping, you'll find fewer stores open and much less merchandise on those store shelves when you get there.Shoppers report many shoe stores have just half their normal amount of merchandise on display. As a result, this shopping season is unlikely to rescue malls already deep in financial trouble. No more hands-on testing Macs and iPadsNeed a trip to the Apple store? 30% of them are closed, as Apple recloses stores in areas in the growing red zones.Meantime, many of the open ones won't let you play with the displays anymore, or do a hands-on test of MacBooks on the big open tables. You will need to ask an associate for help in those stores. CLICK HERE to find out if your store is open. One bright spot in all of this: If stores find school clothing and merchandise not moving well by the middle of August, expect huge markdowns later in the month, so you don't waste your money.____________________Don't Waste Your Money" is a registered trademark of Scripps Media, Inc.
