SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There's a stretch of Linda Rosa Avenue in Bird Rock that winds up a hillside and leads to homes with sweeping views of San Diego's coastline.The homes that enjoy that view, however, vary quite a bit. Some are older, smaller, and were built in the 1960s.Others are modern, and tower above the rest. Some refer to those larger homes as "McMansions," and wonder how they keep getting approved without any pushback from neighbors to protect community character."They basically skirt the reviews," said Dave Ish, who lives in an older home on Linda Rosa.READ?JON HORN'S ORIGINAL LOOK AT 'MCMANSIONS'Developers are able to skip the lengthy and public Coastal Development Permit process as long as they retain at least 50 percent of a structure's exterior walls. It's spelled out in city code. That's why McMansions are popping up in San Diego's coastal neighborhoods. But it turns out the city's 50-percent exemption creates even more flexibility for developers because they can get permit after permit with no waiting period in between.RELATED: Coronado neighbors worried about historic mansion turned transitional homeDeveloper Ben Ryan, of Tourmaline Properties, did that for an ocean-view home on Linda Rosa.In October, the city issued him a permit to add a closet and convert a garage to a carport, under the 50-percent exemption. "Obviously it was just a temporary deal," Ish said. "Nothing was finished, it was this bowed out paneling, these windows weren't finished. The cuts were all messed up."RELATED: Study: Rents rising faster in affordable areasThe city reports the work being finished Feb. 1. It may have been a quick job, but it changed the layout of the home enough to allow Ryan to alter the design for a larger project.Ryan got a new permit later in February - again under the 50-percent exemption - calling for a second story, master suite, decks, kitchen, living room, dining room, and more. Today, the home is just half a wood frame - the closet and carport nowhere in site. The closet, however, was once a massive frame added on to the home (more photos above):</p><p>In a statement, Ryan said the Coastal Development Permit has become an arduous process - delaying projects a year and adding up to 0,000 in costs."It has no relation whatsoever to bulk or scale," Ryan said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System is joining the effort to make more affordable housing. The MTS Board of Directors recently greenlit a new 410-unit housing development at the Grantville trolley station. 156 of the units will be affordable and 254 will be market rate ‘student-oriented’ apartments. MTS is partnering with developers Affirmed Housing and Greystar on the project. It is estimated the total population housed on the planned trolley station property will be 1,049 people. The development would be built on top of the current parking lot. The developers will be making their own parking spaces on the site and MTS will be adding 96 replacement parking spots, according to transit officials. In a statement on the prospective parking concerns MTS wrote, “we average about 80 to 120 commuters per weekday that use the park and ride, so we are in the wheelhouse of demand.” MTS says it is currently looking into developing four more of its stations into similar housing in downtown, El Cajon and Chula Vista. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This year, July Fourth went off with a bang. San Diego Police said Monday that the department received hundreds of calls regarding illegal fireworks this holiday weekend.Despite canceled fireworks shows throughout the city, the department received 323 calls due to fireworks this year.The figure represents a significant uptick since last year, when the city received only 76 calls about fireworks.Despite the increase in calls, San Diego Police say they aren’t aware of any injuries due to the displays.The report comes after the City of San Diego announced that it would cancel this year’s Big Bay Boom to help halt the spread of COVID-19.According to San Diego Fire-Rescue, all consumer fireworks are illegal in the City of San Diego.That list includes sparklers, firecrackers, cherry bombs, bottle rockets, and even poppers.The National Fire Protection Association says that fireworks account for more than half of reported fires in the U.S. on Independence Day. 994
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Three women filed lawsuits Wednesday alleging sexual abuse by multiple clergymen at Living Word Fellowship churches in California over more than a decade.The women said a viral social media post from October 2018 gave them the courage to speak out.Amber Thompson said the abuse started in Los Angeles at the age of 4. "Their attacks continue to haunt me every single day," she said, her voice shaking.The lawsuit describes her as a 7-year-old girl at a church bonfire without her parents, in the company of clergymen, being picked up and taken to a bathroom inside the sanctuary and molested, then taken into the sanctuary and raped.The lawsuit details health issues like urinary tract infections and the fear to use the restroom at school. It states she was raped nine more times on church property before turning 10 years old. She was also abused by her swim coach, according to the documents. Children complained to church leaders about the swim coach, but they were ignored, the lawsuit says.A youth pastor was also named as an alleged perpetrator, stating he wrestled with young girls, including Thompson, and touched their private parts.The document states yet another clergyman would make Thompson sleep in the living room when she had sleepovers with his daughter. During the night, the document states he would molest her, masturbate in front of her and make her touch him.Anaiah Shehori said there are more victims, "there are hundreds of children over decades, literally decades and decades who have been abused."The lawsuit states Shehori was a server for a church party where she was told to wear a mini-skirt and was groped by the clergymen. The document also states she molested by multiple clergymen as a young teen and asked to tell them about her sex life.She was told she was too sexy to perform functions on the stage during service and that she distracted the women's husbands.Lindsey Weck described the hierarchy that allowed the abuse to continue, "I was assigned as all children were a designated relationship or a spiritual parent who is to monitor and control every aspect of my life.""He groomed me into thinking he cared about me in a loving personal way and by the time I was 14, he started having a sexual relationship with me," she said.The lawsuit stated they had a sexual relationship for two years, stopped and started again when she was 17. Her mother found out and went to church leadership, who told her not to contact police.Shehori said the abuse became emotional and mental when she tried to get out of the organization. She said many families have split, some divorcing, trying to leave the church, calling it a cult.The women joined together to "publicly denounce this twisted religious organization that calls itself a church," Thompson said."Anybody who is listening and still there and stuck, you have support from every single one of us and it is possible to leave," Shehori said.To the parents, Thompson had this emotional message "watch for the signs, look for the signs and get them out of there as soon as possible."The Pentecostal church started in 1965 and spread through California, east to Iowa and, according to lawyers who filed the lawsuits, down to Brazil.The church posted these responses in November 2018, according to the law firm: 3320
