SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local doctor says even though a COVID-19 vaccine will be available soon, it will still be several months before we see the impact.Dr. Mark Sawyer, an infectious disease specialist at Rady Children’s Hospital, is on the State Advisory Board that reviews COVID-19 vaccines. He spoke to ABC 10News about the importance of getting this vaccine.“The vaccine is safe, and it works, and we absolutely need this vaccine to deal with the pandemic,” Sawyer said.However, Sawyer added a warning: “If people suddenly think that we’re out of the woods now, and stop wearing masks and distancing from each other, then we’re going to still see the kinds of numbers that we’re seeing right now.”Despite intense discussions among the FDA advisory panel regarding whether Pfizer’s vaccine is safe to use on 16- and 17-year-olds, Sawyer points to the research that was done, saying the drug was tested on individuals from that age group.“There’s no reason to think that a 16-year-old or 17-year-old is going to have a reaction that an 18-year-old is going to have. I think it’s perfectly safe,” Sawyer told ABC 10News.Sawyer also described the side effects one may feel after getting the vaccine. Sawyer said a recipient’s arm may hurt and he or she may feel under the weather. The symptoms can last up to 24 hours after you get the vaccine, but Sawyer said, “There’s no long-term consequences.”As San Diego waits for the county to announce their vaccination plan, informing people when and where they can get it, Sawyer said the bottom line is “everyone can feel comfortable in going out to get the vaccine when it’s their turn.” 1641

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local sailor got an emotional holiday surprise thanks to the generosity of some frequent fliers.Navy diesel mechanic Joe Ramsay just learned his brother is flying in for the holidays."Don't really have the words to describe it," said Ramsay.Ramsay has been stationed in San Diego for more than two years. After hernia surgery this summer, his finances got stretched. There would be no trip home to North Carolina for the holidays."I was going to spend it with friends or alone. That was pretty much my plans," said Ramsay.That wasn't the plan for Ramsay's brother Trey, who entered a contest put on by New York entrepreneur Peter Shankman. The businessman decided to collect and donate hundreds of thousands of airline miles in hopes of reuniting families."Just wanted to get to my brother for the holidays. I haven't seen him in a year or so," said Trey Ramsay.In his entry, Trey called his brother "the closest person in my life," adding the family hasn't been able to visit Joe since he arrived in San Diego. San Diegan Rhys Ford, a mystery writer who travels for her job, donated 45,000 miles and two tickets."It's seeing people reuniting. It's the fact that somebody's so excited to get on a plane. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man was hospitalized after being shot in San Diego’s Encanto neighborhood, police said Thursday.The shooting occurred at around 5:50 p.m. Wednesday on Imperial Avenue, according to San Diego police.Police said the gunfire detection system ShotSpotter reported shots fired in an area near the 6100 block of Imperial Avenue. A second ShotSpotter activation followed shortly after, this time coming from the 6300 block of Imperial Avenue.Responding officers arrived to find a man lying on the ground in a parking lot of a business. The victim had an apparent gunshot wound to his upper torso, police said.The 24-year-old victim was taken to the hospital and is in extreme critical condition, according to police.Police said, “At this time, there is very little known about the circumstances surrounding this incident.”Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to call SDPD’s Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 979

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego family just got bigger thanks to results from a recently taken DNA test.Sita Brooke and her brother, Odie, met their sister Eva Knight for the first time Friday. Brooke's father, Jim, was also on hand to meet his daughter.Brooke told 10News she purchased a DNA kit from Ancestry.com for her parents last Christmas to learn more about her family's origins. Knight, from Arizona, had also taken a DNA test recently.A parental match popped up for both of them.Brooke's dad served for 33 years in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Trinidad at one point, where he met Knight's mother. And the sister's have even more in common. Knight is also originally from San Diego before moving to Arizona.The family members are now enjoying their newly discovered connections. 800
