LOS ANGELES (AP) — Deputies arrested a 13-year-old boy and seized a semi-automatic rifle after he threatened to shoot other students and staff at a Los Angeles-area middle school, authorities said Friday.In a separate case, a boy at another school was taken into custody involving a planned shooting.The arrests came barely a week after deputies were frantically summoned to a high school in Santa Clarita, where a 16-year-old boy killed two fellow students and took his own life.Since then, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has investigated at least 30 school threats, spokesman Sgt. A Grinch is tip-toeing around outside windows of unsuspecting children, to bring delight and a moment of joy this holiday season.In a neighborhood full of Christmas cheer, the Grinch was ready to strike with fear. He didn’t exactly attempt to hide as the children sat inside.Dressed from head-to-toe as the Grinch, Ethan Hecker, 14, banged on the window of a home and was met with laughter and joy, but little did they know, he was there to steal their Christmas cheer.“My goal is to scare the kiddos, let them have some fun,” Hecker said.Allison Hecker, Ethan’s mom, came across a post online of a girl dressed up as the Grinch scaring kids and moving things around in the yard. Ethan says as soon as he saw it, he knew he wanted to do it himself and begged his mom for the costume.“Ethan loves the theatrics and kids and it was perfect,” she said.Hecker ordered the costume and it arrived on Monday. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Electrical equipment caused two Southern California wildfires — one that killed three people and destroyed more than 1,600 homes last year — and another still smoldering in the well-heeled hills of Los Angeles, where thousands of people including Arnold Schwarzenegger fled homes in the dark, utilities said Tuesday.The two findings add more examples of electric lines sparking major wildfires as utilities in California increasingly resort to drastic power outages as a precaution to prevent devastating blazes.A fire that broke out early Monday morning near the J. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lawyers for the family of a black man killed by police in a busy Southern California parking lot said Monday that an autopsy found he was shot 10 times and died from choking on his own blood.The autopsy concluded that 26-year-old Diante Yarber died of asphyxiation and that had he been given medical treatment, he would have had a chance at surviving his wounds, attorney S. Lee Merritt said at a news conference.The autopsy was conducted by a private medical examiner at Merritt's request. An autopsy by San Bernardino County authorities has not been released and it's unclear whether it's been finished.Merritt, who is planning on filing a civil rights lawsuit in the case this week, said the private autopsy found that Yarber had wounds to his chest, back and arms and that he wasn't given medical treatment for "a great deal of time.""The injuries are consistent with defensive wounds ... as he was shielding himself and trying to escape the onslaught of bullets," Merritt said.Merritt did not respond to a message seeking a copy of the autopsy report.
