SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Construction began Friday on SeaWorld's next big attraction for the park, billed as California's tallest, fastest, and longest dive coaster.The first phase on the dive coaster started in conjunction with National Roller Coaster Day, as crews prepared the coaster site for the ride's foundation and utilities. The coaster will be located adjacent to the park's Journey to Atlantis attraction in the southeast corner of the park.SeaWorld previously said the ride would be called "Mako," after the endangered species of shark. At the crown of the attraction, riders will be suspended on a 45-degree angle before diving 143 feet at more than 60 miles per hour. For two minutes, riders will zip through inversions, a barrel roll and Immelmann loop, hammerhead turn, and flat spin along 2,500 feet of track. Each car will hold 18 riders in three, six-person rows.Aquatic education will play a role in the attraction as well. SeaWorld plans to partner with a conservation group to focus on the ride's conservation efforts.Switzerland-based Bolliger & Mabillard, which built SeaWorld Orlando's Kraken and Mako rides, will construction the San Diego coaster.SeaWorld plans to open the coaster to the public in 2020. 1476

Overall, California ranked 21st on the list of best and worst states for military retirees. The Golden State ranked 9th for quality of life, 3rd for number of VA health facilities per number of veterans and 5th for number of VA benefits-administration facilities per number of veterans. Dragging California down to the 21st spot however, is the cost of living. The state ranked 51st for housing affordability and 49th for percent of veteran-owned businesses. California also ranked 48th for its percentage of homeless veterans and 12th for veteran job opportunities. WalletHub ranked states based on feedback from psychology, social work and child studies experts at several universities, and statistics from each region. States were given grades in categories including the cost of housing, child care, and unemployment. California ranked 19th overall. The individual category rankings are as follows: 5th: Percent of families with young kids5th: Infant mortality rate15th: Separation and divorce rate34th: Percent of families in poverty36th: Violent crime rate38th: Unemployment rate46th: Child care costs49th: Median family salary (adjusted for cost of living)50th: Housing affordability Minnesota, Massachusetts and North Dakota filled the top three spots for family-friendly states. The worst states for families were New Mexico, Mississippi and Louisiana. Housing prices, a problem for western states, were at their best levels in the Midwest. Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, North Dakota and Ohio topped the list. California's median home price as of November 2018 was 7,900, Zillow reported. The median rent price in California was ,750.Each state’s affordability was based in part on median mortgage debt, credit score, housing costs, share of people who save money for their child’s education, and annual family health insurance premium.
