SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Homicide investigators have been assigned to look into a deadly fire in Logan Heights that claimed three lives. According to the San Diego Police Department, the investigators have been assigned “out of an abundance of caution.”Investigators will work closely with the metro arson strike team also looking into the incident, the department says. The fire started at a home on the 3100 block of Clay Street around 4:30 a.m. Sunday. 44-year-old Jose Romero died at the scene while his wife and daughter, 46-year-old Nicolasa Maya-Romero and 21-year-old Iris Romero died at the hospital in the days following the blaze. The family’s 23-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son remain in the hospital. The family’s oldest son, a 26-year-old, was unharmed in the fire. The 26-year-old said he awoke Sunday morning to find his bed on fire. The man told 10News he tried yelling at his family to get out of the home."My dogs were jumping on me, trying to wake me up. I woke up. When I woke up, my bed was on fire. I jumped out of bed and started screaming the house is on fire," said Wilber Romero.According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, firefighters had to go inside the home to pull many of the victims out.A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family with funeral expenses. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For students in the 3D printing club at Westview High in Poway whose goal was never to hit the 'print' button, they've come a long way."It feels really amazing to know the 3D printing club is helping those who are in need."Victor Ku is president for Westview High's 3D printing club that started up this past year.When the club started, their mission was purely educational. They wanted to create a curriculum and teach people the basics of 3D printing because they didn't have the money to actually print anything."It can be very expensive and super confusing at first which is why we believe all these limitations shouldn’t restrict one from getting the opportunity to learn its such an amazing tool."Then when March came around, Victor said "we were back to square one. We didn’t really know what to do and we realized we need to quickly pivot towards the communities needs and in this case it was face shields or personal protective equipment."That's when the team of young and aspiring engineers got to work and finally hit 'print'."We took a small break and waited for all the design and the actual professional engineers to perfect the design before we started mass producing these face shields," Victor said.They've donated about 400 face shields to five different organizations, and are some of the youngest people to make a difference."We’ve distributed them to hospitals, hair salons and post offices to name a few. That little bit could definitely help save any lives."With things easing up, Victor said they want to widen their distribution list. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Gas prices in Southern California could reach .30 per gallon in the next several weeks, according to a GasBuddy. The company’s senior petroleum analyst, Patrick DeHaan, took to Twitter to announce that prices could soar to .15 to .30 per gallon in the next 10 to 14 days. According to DeHaan, the average price per gallon reached .85 in Los Angeles Wednesday afternoon and is expected to “breach in the next few days.”DeHaan tweeted out earlier Wednesday that prices in Southern California could spike by anywhere between 25 and 40 cents per gallon in the coming days. The news comes amid problems at several California refineries and just weeks after attacks on oil fields in Saudi Arabia. Several of the refinery issues include unplanned work at PBF refinery in Torrance, an outage at Chevron’s Segundo refinery, a flaring event at Valero Benicia and Marathon’s LA refinery, DeHaan says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Eighteen-year-old Joseph Preissman is getting ready for his very first day as a college student. But a mistake he made last December is dragging down his final days of summer."It'd be really great to just figure out why we're getting charged so much for something so little, and something that was, like, an accident," he said. The accident happened near Idyllwild. Preissman and a friend were returning from a hiking trip, when he said it hailed. Preissman was coming around a bend and lost control of his car, running into a freeway directional sign and splitting its wooden post. Nobody was hurt, so Preissman thought the accident was ancient history. That is, until July 31, when the Preissman family got a bill from Caltrans to replace the sign - totaling 7.95. All but about of that bill was for labor. "I could even understand half that cost, but I can't understand how it could possibly take three people, let's say from 8 in the morning to 12 in the afternoon, to repair that sign," said Daniel Preissman, Joseph's father. Caltrans spokeswoman Emily Leinen stood behind the bill. She said about 0 of it went to administrative fees. Much of the rest reimbursed the crews for going out to the area and replacing the 16-foot-tall post. They had to make sure it had the proper breaking points for driver safety. Leinen added one crew member had to keep watch for other cars coming around the bend."It's rocky road terrain out there, it’s a mountain, so unfortunately they had to do everything by hand on a blind corner," Leinen said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hundreds of students at nearly a dozen schools walked out of class Friday in protest of the planned layoffs by the Sweetwater Union High School District.The district says cutting the teachers is the last resort to fixing a million budget deficit.
