KENOSHA, Wis. — The father of Jacob Blake says his son was left paralyzed from the waist down after he was shot by a Kenosha police officer Sunday.Blake’s father told the Chicago Sun-Times that he was told his son was shot eight times during the Sunday evening confrontation with police, which was captured on cellphone video and led to two nights of unrest in the city that's along Lake Michigan between Milwaukee and Chicago.The father, who is also named Jacob Blake, said he was driving from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Kenosha to be with his son.He said his son has “eight holes” in his body and that doctors don’t know if the paralysis will be permanent.Protests in Blake's honor happened across the country Monday night, including in Portland, San Diego, New York, Minneapolis, and Denver.Police declared a riot in Portland after fires were set outside of the offices of the police association. In San Diego, at least three protesters were arrested.Locally, anger over Blake's shooting spilled into the streets of Kenosha for a second night Monday. Police again fired tear gas at hundreds of protesters who defied a curfew, threw bottles and shot fireworks at law enforcement guarding the courthouse.Wisconsin Democratic Gov. Tony Evers activated 125 members of the National Guard to assist local law enforcement Monday. Police fired the tear gas about 30 minutes after an 8 p.m. curfew took effect, but many protesters remained out hours later.Blake was shot by Kenosha police just after 5 p.m. Sunday. Kroger is going to stop selling magazines about assault rifles, a spokeswoman for the grocery chain said on Friday.Kroger made the announcement just weeks after it said it would stop selling guns and ammunition to anyone under the age of 21. Kroger sells guns through its 45 Fred Meyer stores, located in four Western states.Kroger didn't specify how the company will screen gun magazines for "assault rifles." Some magazines, like Field & Stream, focus on hunting rifles and shotguns. Other magazines focus on handguns. LA JOLLA (CNS) - A 31-year-old woman was hospitalized this morning with a fractured neck sustained in a two-vehicle crash at a La Jolla intersection.The woman was driving a 2015 Toyota Prius eastbound in the 8500 block of Whale Watch Way at 4:15 p.m. Friday when she ran a stop sign at Prestwick Drive and made a left turn where a 44-year-old man driving a 2018 Chevy Traverse northbound on Prestwick Drive broadsided the woman's car, according to Officer John Buttle with the San Diego Police Department.The woman was taken to a hospital with a fractured neck, police said. Alcohol was considered a factor in the crash. No arrests were reported. 654

Matt Bevin issued an apology Sunday for remarks he made Friday that suggested a state-wide teachers' strike left schoolchildren vulnerable to harm, sexual assault and drugs, saying his remarks had "unintended consequences.""Many people have been confused or hurt or just misunderstand what it was that I was trying to communicate," Bevin said in a video posted to his Twitter page."For those of you who have been hurt, it is my absolute, sincere apology to you," Bevin said.
