BEIJING, Aug. 21 -- China Mobile Thursday reported its first drop in net profit since 1999 because of rising competition from rivals China Telecom and China Unicom and its weak 3G performance.    The world's biggest telco posted a net profit of 30.1 billion yuan (US.42 billion) in the second quarter, compared with 30.6 billion yuan a year ago.     Analysts had previously forecast a net profit of 31.4 billion yuan for the period.     "A macro-economic slowdown, a rising mobile communications penetration rate and changes in the competitive environment of the telecommunications industry in China have posed challenges to the development of the business in the first half," China Mobile said in a statement.     In the first six months, China Mobile posted a net profit of 55.3 billion yuan, a 1.4 percent annual growth. Its revenue totaled 212.9 billion yuan, an 8.9 percent rise from a year ago.     China Mobile's monthly average revenue per user, a key index of the industry to monitor a telco's profitability, was 75 yuan in the first half, about 10 percent less than a year ago.     China Mobile added 35.87 million users in the first half to total 493 million by the end of June. The telco had 957,000 3G users since it started a trial 3G service in April.     In the first half, China Mobile took 66 percent of the total new additional mobile users, compared with 85 percent a year ago, due to the "changed competitive landscape," the company said.     "The gap between China Mobile and other rivals will become narrow but it will still dominate the market for about two years," said Wu Wenzhao, a telecommunications analyst of Analysys International.     In January, China issued 3G licenses to China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom.

BEIJING, August 5 -- Property sales across 30 cities in China fell 4 percent in July as prices soared and supplies dwindled with big cities feeling the pinch for the first time this year, analysts said.     According to the UWIN property transaction system, the floor space of apartments sold in July dipped 5.37 percent over June to 1.04 million sq m.     Statistics put out by the Beijing Real Estate Transaction website showed that sales of forward delivery housing in Beijing fell to 10,862 units last month, compared to 12,840 units in June.     Property transactions in Guangzhou fell 36 percent over June. The figure is only half of that of May, said Guangzhou's official property website.     "The fall has been triggered by high property prices and shrinking supplies in some cities," said Qin Xiaomei, head of research, Jones Lang LaSalle Beijing. "Property developers have slowed down the pace of new projects in the second half after robust sales in the first half," she said.     Property prices in China's 70 major cities were up 0.8 percent in June, the fourth month-on-month growth in a row this year, according to statistics from the National Development and Reform Commission.     Beijing and Shanghai reported a month-on-month growth of 0.4 and 1 percentage points respectively in June, with prices skyrocketing to record highs of 2007 in some areas, fueled by strong investment, purchase demand and higher land prices.     The high prices have also made most of the prospective buyers wary of making fresh investments.     Li Wei, a 29-year-old company executive in Beijing, said he would prefer to adopt a wait-and-see attitude as the high prices have made most of his preferred apartments unaffordable.     "The unit price of the apartment has soared to 20,000 yuan per sq m from 14,500 yuan per sq m 40 days ago," Li said.     For others like Zhang Li, a property speculator from Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, this is the time to cash in. The apartment she bought in November last year has gained 40 percent in the past six months, largely exceeding her expectations.     "I am a bit uneasy with such a rapid increase in such a short period of time," said Zhang, who has property investment experience of more than a decade. "With people's income and economic fundamentals seeing no big change, I think selling the property will be a safer bet."     According to Grant Ji, director of Savills (Beijing), a UK-based real estate service provider, the fall in transaction volume is still within a normal band.     "July was an off-season for the housing market," said Ji.     "With no big shift likely in the macroeconomic policy during the second half, property prices are unlikely see a big fall as the market is still awash with funds," Ji said.

BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), the country's top aircraft manufacturer, said Sunday total sales revenue in its auto business would reach 30 billion yuan (about 4.39 billion U.S. dollars) by 2017.     Geng Ruguang, deputy general manager of AVIC, said making big passenger vehicles has become the the corporations's guiding plan for development in its auto business.     Geng revealed the figure at a ceremony marking AVIC and its partner Volvol's new product Silver 900 series going into production line.     The series is a new type of big and luxurious passenger vehicles, 12 meters long, which could be used for road transportation, tourist reception, and military equipment.     The Silver 900 series was developed by Xi'an Silver Bus Corporation, a joint venture established in 1994 by AVIC Xi'an Aircraft Industry Co. ltd, and the Swedish bus and truck maker Volvo company.     The Xi'an Silver Bus Corporation expects to produce annually 4,000 vehicles by 2014. LONDON, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Britain hopes to further expand cooperation with China in economic, financial and trade sectors, Business Secretary Lord Mandelson said Saturday.     In a written interview with Xinhua on the eve of his visit to China, Mandelson, also the First Secretary of State, said economic and political relations between Britain and China are very strong.     The High-Level Economic & Financial Dialogue would lead to collaboration in areas such as the development of financial services, the protection of intellectual property rights, and the establishment of a comprehensive social security system in China, Mandelson said.     During Mandelson's visit, which begins Monday, he will give a speech at a low carbon business solution event in Beijing attended by about 250 British and Chinese companies. He will also sign a "Sustainable City" memorandum of understanding with Changsha, the capital of south central China's Hunan province.     "The UK is keen to share its low carbon technology," Mandelson said, noting that Britain would like to export even more high-tech goods to China.     Mandelson said the UK, by far, is the largest European investor in China and transfers much of its technology to the country through wholly owned subsidiaries and joint ventures.     The business secretary expressed hope that China would improve its regulations to facilitate British companies' participation in its hi-tech sectors.     China, Mandelson said, has taken every measure possible to mitigate the impact of the global financial crisis, which also has contributed to the recovery of the world economy.     He called China's huge stimulus package "a very impressive commitment to rebuilding its economy and the welcome effects are already being felt."     China has contributed to the rebalancing of the world economy by re-orienting its own growth model to stimulate domestic consumption, the business secretary said.     Meanwhile, Mandelson also expected China to play a bigger part in pushing forward multilateral trade talks     "I hope China will play an important role in achieving a conclusion to the Doha Development Round and I hope that the global recession has provided a sense of renewed urgency for this agreement", he said.     As the former EU Trade Commissioner, Mandelson has never shied from voicing his objections to protectionism.     Imposing tariffs on imports, he said, creates distortions in the global economy, which result in poverty and inequality.     Trade is essential to the prosperity of the world economy and remains one of the main avenues open to increase productivity and growth, he said.     "I hope that UK and China's joint efforts to foster closer trade and investment links in China's rapidly developing regional business centers will stimulate and serve to support new business partnerships," the business secretary said.     Mandelson said China's process of gradually opening its capital market would deepen the capital and expertise available to Chinese companies as they increasingly look to expand overseas.     "We are equally keen to work with the Chinese authorities and markets to enable foreign firms to list on its exchanges," he said.     "We are very supportive of the State Council's desire for Shanghai to develop into a truly international financial center over the next 10 to 15 years and believe that an important step to building this profile will be the continued growth and diversification of China's capital markets."     Mandelson also emphasized that there are many benefits from an internationalized Chinese yuan, which would promote greater stability in global foreign exchange markets.     "A more widely traded Chinese currency will help Chinese companies win business in overseas markets," he said, "And a more market-oriented exchange rate will help China re-orient its economy towards domestic consumption, which would be in China's own interests."     When it comes to the climate change issue, Mandelson noted that China is making strong efforts to reduce the growth of its greenhouse gas emissions. He pointed out that China currently aims to reduce consumption of energy per unit of GDP by 20 percent between 2005 and 2010.     "Tackling climate change is a win-win business opportunity for both the UK and China," he said.     Mandelson also called for international cooperation to deal with the world's other thorny issues.     The global downturn has powerfully illustrated how important it is to have constructive engagement at the international level, he said.     "We need international solutions to financial regulation, to tackling pollution and in fighting proliferation and terrorism. These are global challenges that require a global response," Mandelson said.
