SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A small wildfire broke out Sunday morning near Vallejo (vuh-LAY'-ho) with flames coming dangerously close to homes and forcing a college to evacuate at the northeast end of San Francisco Bay.A live broadcast on KGO-TV shows the fire on both sides of Interstate 80 and homeowners using hoses on a hillside to try and fight it.The fire forced the freeway to close and the California State University Maritime Academy to issue an evacuation order.The wildfire halted traffic at the Carquinez Bridge toll booth as the freeway became shrouded in thick smoke.Vallejo is 55 miles (88.5 kilometers) south of Geyserville where a massive wildfire forced 180,000 people to flee their communities. 714

San Diego, Calif. (KGTV) - Season 16 of the Bachelorette was unlike any other. The original Bachelorette, Clare, fell quickly in love with one of the men on the show and left engaged to him. Then a new Bachelorette, Tayshia was brought in. San Diego local Chasen Nick was there through all of the drama, trying to vie for each woman’s heart.Chasen, who has lived in San Diego for close to ten years, said his friends submitted him for the show. He said he was brought in during the pandemic, so he knew Clare was the Bachelorette and he knew the season would be shot in a quarantined setting at a Palm Springs resort.Tayshia sent him home on the episode that aired Nov. 24 and he said looking back, he felt more of a connection with Clare.“I have to be completely honest, I’d say Clare. I didn’t really get the opportunity to progress with Tayshia and it was just a surface level connection getting to know each other,” he said.Chasen had a few heated moments during his time on the show, including calling Tayshia a “smoke show” in front of the other guys in the house. Looking back, he says he would’ve picked a different word. He said one part of the journey he would not change, though, was his interactions with Ed, another guy in the house. Chasen and Ed had a few tense moments, but Chasen said he doesn’t regret how he reacted.“I wish Ed would have stopped and surrendered when I apologized but some people hold onto things. I think if that was different than things could’ve been different with my progression with Tayshia and our relationship,” said Chasen, saying he and Ed have reconciled since the show aired.Chasen said he’s happy to be back home in San Diego. He’s ready to focus on his career working as an account executive for Apex Systems, then get back into the dating world.“I’m onto bigger and better things right now, focus on myself, and I’ll be able to put myself out there eventually,” he said.He said since the show started airing, he’s received support from his community and strangers in the San Diego area.“So much support and love from everyone. I’ve been recognized in public and don’t be afraid to come up to me and say hi. I’d love to talk to anyone. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A San Diego-based rancher says their business has grown as the corporate meat industry struggles.In the past months, Doug Lindamood, of SonRise Ranch, says they've seen their ranch experience a surge in business.“Surprisingly, in an odd set of circumstances, we’ve had a ranch that’s been very successful during these times,” he said. He said their business has easily tripled since the beginning of the pandemic. They’ve seen more people seeking food safety, so they’re buying meat in bulk. The ranch typically sells about 10-12 half or full cows a year, but that’s recently increased to 10-12 a week. This boost comes as the industrial meat industry is hurting across the country. Lindamood said a handful of companies produce a majority of the meat in the U.S. and the big players have been hit with sick employees, causing closures and less supply. “Highly consolidated plants being affected by basically a pandemic which then has the potential to shut down a vast portion of our production,” he said. Lindamood adds this has been a ticking time bomb that needs to be addressed. “For every one of those small plants that shut down over the last 20 or 30 years, we lost a small piece of our soul with respect to connecting to our consumers,” Lindamood said. “We need not one or 10 of me — which there are maybe five or six of us in the Southern California region. We need 50 or 60 or 200 of us.” 1433

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The San Diego chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated is celebrating 65 years of their Leadership AKAdemy. The program mentors a group of teenage girls every year. The AKAdemy ends with a memorable ball. The AKA San Diego chapter has one mission: encourage scholastic achievement, strong ethical standards, and "be a service to all mankind." For over six decades, those values have been used to mentor girls around the county. During the 1950s, the chapter held its first debutante ball to expose young girls to cultural opportunities. It was historically the debut of young ladies ages 16 to 19 as official members of society. "Now it has grown into a leadership academy to where we equip the young people with life skills," says Chapter President, Deborah Davis-Gillespie. The teens attend different workshops, like college readiness and etiquette, each week for the months' long program. This year's Leadership AKAdemy has a total of 16 girls. "I'm just really happy to be a part of the whole process and the whole experience," says participant Kennedy Harris. Community service is also at the top of the list for the program. The girls participate in community events like the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and the MLK Day of Service in Balboa Park. The goal is to help others and for the girls to have an appreciation for the communities in which they live. "It's really nice to be able to make those connections early on in my life," says participant Sanai Mitchell. After months of workshops, events, and dance practice with their escorts for the ball, the girls are now just a few weeks away from their big night. They will be presented to their families and community as young women, ready to take on the world. "It's an evolution, its life-changing and they walk away a better person than when they came in," says Davis- Gillespie.This year's AKA Leadership AKAdemy will be held on Saturday, March 21st at the Legacy Hotel and Resort in Mission Valley. 2000
