Businesses are considering how they'll need to change up their restrooms amid the pandemic.“I do think that most people would agree in the past, even pre-COVID, public restrooms tended not to be the cleanest place in most public venues and this is a real concern given the way germs can be transmitted,” said Steven Soifer, a professor of social work at the University of Mississippi.Across the country, some businesses have been doing quick fixes like taping off sinks or urinals to encourage distancing. Others have been changing up how often the restroom gets cleaned.McDonald’s wants its franchisees to clean their restrooms every 30 minutes.Soifer, who’s also the president of the American Restroom Association, thinks having the cleanings documented would give us all better peace of mind.“A lot of these public bathrooms in the better places have these charts and they tell you the last time the bathroom was cleaned,” Soifer. “I think that should become standard practice. People know they're cleaning the bathroom every half hour, every hour, once a day.”Mcdonald’s is also asking its restaurant owners to put in foot pulls so people can open the restroom door without touching it, automatic paper towel dispensers and touchless sinks.Soifer is hoping these guidelines will set the standard for other businesses.The American Restroom Association advocates for single stall, enclosed private restrooms, like we see more of in Europe. But they acknowledge this would be a big expense for businesses.Cheaper, more immediate fixes they suggest are putting hand sanitizer in addition to soap by the sink or even in the stall. 1641
As Virginia Beach mourns 12 people gunned down in a shooting rampage, more questions remain on why a veteran city engineer targeted people he'd worked with for years.The gunman fired indiscriminately Friday on a municipal building in the coastal city in Virginia before he died after a long shootout with police officers.As officials struggle for answers, Mayor Bobby Dyer has tried to quell both sides of the gun control debate, saying he wanted to avoid the "knee jerk reaction" and the "bipartisan bureaucratic malpractice.""There's a lack of civility. There's a lack of mutual respect. There's a lack of willingness to understand each other," Dyer said Saturday.Here is what we know so far -- and what we don't.The mass shooting and the targetWhat we know: The shooter was a "disgruntled employee" in the municipal building he attacked, a Virginia government source said.On Friday toward the end of the work day, he shot one person in a car and then entered the building where he fired at people on three floors.What we don't: Authorities are still searching for a motive, and those who knew him say they didn't see the horror coming."I guess the big question is, why? We want to know, too," Dyer said.Joseph Scott said he worked with the shooter for several years and saw him that day. He said the suspect was brushing his teeth in the bathroom, as he always did, and wished him a good day. He was "what I thought was a good person," Scott said of the shooter.The victims and their conditionsWhat we know: Twelve people were killed in the attack and several others were wounded, with three people in critical condition and one in fair, hospital officials said Saturday.Those killed include Herbert "Bert" Snelling, who was trying to file a permit when the gunman opened fire.Three right-of-way agents were killed: Laquita C. Brown, with four and a half years years in the public works department; Mary Louise Gayle, with 24 years in the department; and Alexander Mikhail Gusev, with nine years in the department.Also slain were engineers Tara Welch Gallagher, who spent six years in the city's public works department; Katherine A. Nixon, who worked in public utilities for 10 years; Richard H. Nettleton, who worked for the city's public utilities department for 28 years; and Christopher Kelly Rapp, who had been in public works for 11 months.Joshua O. Braxton Moral walked across the stage Sunday at his high school in Ulysses, Kansas, as a newly-minted graduate.Less than two weeks later, the 17-year-old is set on May 30 to mark another milestone: receiving his undergraduate degree from Harvard University.Moral's parents enrolled him at the world-renowned institution when he was just 11, he told CNN."My parents noticed I was bored in school and needed something to inspire growth, so they ended up finding the Extension School," he said.Harvard Extension School is mostly for nontraditional learners, be it someone with a job or who's not in the age range of a typical college student, Moral said.Most courses can be taken online, but Extension School students also must earn 16 credit hours in person at the iconic campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts, said Moral, who majored in government with a minor in English. Moral is currently a degree candidate from the school, a Harvard University spokesman confirmed.An extraordinary vocabulary and a stunning memoryStudying for both high school and Harvard at the same time wasn't easy, Moral said. But officials at his high school took a lot of the load off, allowing him to spend a couple hours each day working on Harvard's coursework, he said.Moral has always been drawn to law and politics, and he's now hoping to go to law school, preferably at Columbia University, he said."I am, of course, excited to end this chapter of my life and anxious to begin the next," he said.Moral's older sister, 29-year-old Brittney Jo Seger, told CNN her brother has always been talented."When he was little, his vocabulary was extraordinary," she said. "Something my mom, sister and I noticed early on was his memory. That's one of the things that makes him incredible. On Tuesday, Bank of America announced they would increase their employee’s starting wages to even more than that, starting at an hour. In two years, the company said that minimum will go up to an hour. “I think we're gonna see significant change in income for a lot of folks, and that's gonna have an impact on the economy,” says Leo Gertner with the National Employment Law Project.
