BEIJING, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met here Thursday with the foreign guests attending the 2008 Annual General Meeting of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED). During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on how China could properly handle the relation between stable, fast economic growth and environmental protection, and achieve sustainable development, against the backdrop of the aggravating global financial crisis and the downturn of global growth. The main task of the Council includes exchanging international successful experience in the field of environment and development, and studying key environment and development issues in China.

"The new moves were proved to be correct and effective."     The central budget is supposed to be discussed at the NPC annual session in next March. VICTORIA, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- At the invitation of Seychellois President James Alix Michel and Speaker of the country's National Assembly Patrick Herminie, Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo arrived here Wednesday afternoon to begin an official visit to the country on the final leg of his five-nation African tour.     In a written statement released at the airport upon his arrival, Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, highlighted the rapid development of the China-Seychelles relations in the past 32 years since the two nations forged the diplomatic relations, noting that the bilateral cooperation between the two nations have brought concrete benefit to the two peoples. BEIJING, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- After successfully carrying out its first escort mission, the Chinese Navy prepares to cover another 11 domestic merchant vessels planning to travel around Somalia this week.     "We will actively provide information and necessary rescue services for those merchant ships passing through the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters," said He Jianzhong, spokesman with Ministry of Transport (MOT). The Chinese naval fleet arrived Tuesday in the waters of the Gulf of Aden off Somalia to carry out the first escort mission against pirates. Four Chinese ships, including one from China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, were escorted by the fleet.     A governmental spokesman said on Tuesday that the naval task force will protect a total of 15 Chinese merchant ships between Tuesday and Saturday.     Consisting of two destroyers and one supply ship, the naval fleet arrived in waters off Somali coast on Tuesday after a voyage of more than 4,400 nautical miles. It set sail on Dec. 26.     Soon after its arrival, the fleet conducted its first escort service for four Chinese merchant vessels, including one from Hong Kong.     The ship's cargo, origins and destinations were not released.     Under command of the fleet's flagship DDG-169 Wuhuan destroyer, the four merchant vessels sailed in a line formation and passed through the warship's patrolling area.     Surging piracy off the Somali coast has increasingly threatened internationals shipping. A total of 1,265 Chinese merchant ships passed through the Gulf of Aden last year. Seven were attacked by pirates.     One Chinese fishing ship, Tian Yu 8, and its 18 crew members were hijacked on Nov. 14, 2008. They are still being held by pirates.     The MOT announced Chinese merchant ships may ask for protection by applying to the China Shipowners' Association (CSA) and China Maritime Search and Rescue Center (CMSRC).     According to the commander of the Chinese Naval expedition, Real-Admiral Du Jingchen, the main task for the warships is to dispel pirates with their presence.     "We have started our escort mission and will conduct careful deployment and close contact with the vessels to secure their safety by strictly abiding by the U.N. resolutions and international laws," said Real-Admiral Du.     The fleet is carrying about 800 crew members including 70 soldiers from the Navy's special forces along with weapons such as missiles, canons and helicopters.     For the first phase of the escort mission, the fleet will patrol the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters for about three months, followed by possible replacement warships as needed.

BEIJING, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top legislator, Wu Bangguo, met here Wednesday with visiting speaker of the Slovak National Council, Pavol Paska, calling on the two sides to step up inter-parliamentary cooperation to further boost bilateral relations.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, highlighted China-Slovakia relations, noting that the ties already entered into a phase of development.     Citing Slovakia as one of the fastest growing member states in the European Union (EU) and China as the biggest developing country in the world, Wu said that the two share a solid foundation for further cooperation. It also wants to forge cooperation with China in fields such as infrastructure.     He noted that Slovakia, as a new EU member state, is willing to play a role of bridging the EU-China strategic partnership for further development, reiterating that Slovak parliament and government will continue to cohere to the one-China policy.     The two sides also exchanged their views on inter-parliamentary cooperation, agreeing to push forward collaboration among parliamentary special groups and exchanges of the young parliament members in an effort to generate contribution to the new growth of the bilateral relations.     Paska arrived here Monday for a 5-day visit to China as Wu's guest.
