ERLANGER, Ky. -- Police shot a suspect outside a bar in Erlanger, Kentucky on Wednesday night after the suspect pointed a gun at the officers, according to Kentucky State Police trooper Charles Loudermilk.Loudermilk said two officers from the Erlanger Police Department had been pursuing 40-year-old Dexter Helton, of Florence, over an active felony drug warrant and located him inside Peecox Bar and Grill at about 8 p.m. He fled on foot out the back door of the bar, drew a firearm and pointed it at the officers, at which point an officer shot him. "This action caused a life threatening situation for the officers involved and they were forced to discharge their firearms," Kentucky State Police said in a news release. Helton was airlifted to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center with "critical injuries" after the incident. Neither of the Erlanger officers were shot or injured. Identities of the police officers involved have not yet been released. Investigators are reviewing footage from the officer's body cameras. Authorities also seized a witness's phone who had posted a video of the moments after the shooting on Facebook. Surveillance video from the bar will also be analyzed, Loudermilk said. Kentucky State Police will investigate the shooting, Loudermilk said.  1359

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- The city of Encinitas has voted to move forward with a plan to create a safe parking lot for people living out of their cars. The city council voted 4-1 to start negotiating with Jewish Family Service, with the goal of opening the safe parking lot by the end of the year. Both supporters and opponents spoke during Wednesday's city council meeting, 30 in favor and 15 opposed. Those opposed to the lot said they were worried about their safety and property values. Those in favor said this would help people get back on their feet and keep them from becoming chronically homeless. The lot will be operated by Jewish Family Service on the Leichtag Foundation's property. Once the plan is finalized it will operate 365 days a year, seven days a week from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. It will have overnight security, bathrooms, hand-washing stations, food and resources to help people get back into permanent housing. Everyone is vetted to make sure candidates don't have any violent criminal conviction and are not on the registered sex offender list. The city says the plan won't cost taxpayers a dime. FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) -- A tortoise is recovering after falling 10 feet from a wall Sunday, cracking its shell.The tortoise was found by a good Samaritan after falling from a 10-foot wall while being chased by a dog, according to the County News Center.The 70-pound tortoise was taken to a veterinary hospital where animal services were called.Officials say that’s when they learned it would cost several thousand dollars to fix the 35 to 40-year-old tortoise.“We have a donor-driven Spirit fund that we can use for severe medical cases such as this one,” said County Animal Services Director Dan DeSousa. “This tortoise will get the extensive, aggressive care and long-term observation that he needs to regain his health and hopefully live to a great, old age.”The tortoise underwent surgery Tuesday, where veterinarians put screws into the shell then used ties on the screws to hold the broken pieces together.Veterinarians then used the same paste material that dentures are made from to seal the cracks.For more information or to donate to the Spirit fund, click here. 1098

FARMINGTON, Utah — A man faces felony charges after he admitted to stabbing a woman and throwing her out of a moving car in Sunday night, killing her. At about 9:50 p.m., emergency dispatch started receiving calls about a body in traffic on northbound I-15. Witnesses reported seeing a vehicle driving erratically and nearly hitting the median."A short time later, witnesses stated a person or what appeared to be a body came out of the vehicle on the driver side. The vehicle then continued for a distance continuing to drive erratically before it came to a stop," a probable cause statement said.A Davis County Sheriff's Office deputy made contact with Oscar Cuevas-Landa near State St. and Main St. in Farmington.According to the probable cause statement, Cuevas-Landa had blood on his hand, forearm and pants, and he was wearing no shirt and only one shoe."After being advised of his Miranda [rights] the subject spoke about the incident stating that he had stabbed the victim multiple times, unbuckled her seat belt, reached over and opened the door and then pushed the victim out of the driver side door," the statement said.Investigators believe Cuevas-Landa had hitched a ride with the victim, whom he didn't know."During that journey, [Cuevas-Landa] stated that the victim looked at him funny, so he stabbed the victim several times and then pushed the victim (driver) from a vehicle moving at freeway speeds," the probable cause statement said.Cuevas-Landa also told investigators he had been using marijuana and LSD.A State Bureau of Investigation agent responded to the area where witnesses reported seeing the body and found the woman dead.Police didn't identify the victim, but said she suffered extensive injuries , including two wounds consistent with stabbing injuries.Cuevas-Landa faces a first-degree felony charge of murder and a second-degree felony charge of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury.This story originally reported by David Wells on fox13now.com. 2006

(KGTV) -- Authorities are asking for the public’s help identifying a woman accused of stealing identities.On February 26, Deputies were contacted by a resident in Encinitas who said someone stole her identity and tried to withdraw money from her bank account.Authorities say the suspect also applied for and received credit cards in the victim’s name and made charges on the fraudulent accounts.Detectives later discovered that the same suspect also stole identities of several other people throughout San Diego and Riverside Counties.Anyone with information is asked to call the North Coastal Sheriff’s Station at 760-966-3500 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.Crime Stoppers is offering up to a ,000 reward for anyone with information that leads to an arrest. 789
