NEW YORK CITY — Police are looking for a man they say assaulted a New York City bus driver who asked him to put on a mask before boarding the Manhattan bus.According to the NYPD, the unidentified man attempted to get on the northbound New York City Transit Authority (MTA) bus near Madison Avenue and East 29th Street around 2:30 a.m. Monday without a mandatory face covering.The bus driver, 62, stopped the man, telling him he had to put on a mask to ride the bus, police said.According to authorities, the man punched the bus driver in the face before fleeing the bus in an unknown direction.The victim suffered pain and swelling and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, police said.Face coverings or masks are required on all MTA buses, subways and trains as the city continues to battle the coronavirus pandemic.The NYPD has released the above surveillance images of the man for whom they're searching.This story was originally published by Mark Sundstrom and Rebecca Solomon on WPIX in New York City. 1022

New Orleans city officials have set a tentative date to remove the bodies of two workers that have been trapped inside a partially-collapsed construction site since October.The efforts to recover the bodies of the workers trapped in the collapsed Hard Rock Hotel construction site could begin as early as July 13, according to NOLA.com.A spokesman for the city said in a press briefing on Tuesday that crews have finished taking down three buildings that surround the hotel and are currently assembling cranes to work on the building itself.Crews could begin working on the hotel by Monday, and officials say it could take four to five days before rescuers can remove the remains of the two workers.The two workers were killed in a partial collapse of the Hard Rock Hotel construction site in downtown New Orleans on Oct. 12. NEW ORLEANS — A Black man whose life sentence for stealing hedge clippers in a home burglary drew scathing criticism from the chief justice of Louisiana's Supreme Court has been granted parole. Louisiana's high court had denied release for 63-year-old Fair Wayne Bryant earlier this year for the 1997 burglary that netted him a set of hedge clippers. In dissent, Chief Justice Bernette Johnson said the habitual offender law under which Bryant was sentenced was a “modern manifestation” of Jim Crow era laws aimed at jailing Black people for simple crime. NIPAWIN, Saskatchewan (AP) — Canadian police said early Saturday 14 people were killed and 14 people were injured after a truck collided with a bus carrying a junior hockey team to a playoff game in Western Canada.Police say there were 28 people, including the driver, on board the bus of the Humboldt Broncos team when the crash occurred around 5 p.m. Friday on Highway 35 in Saskatchewan."We can now confirm fourteen people have died as a result of this collision," The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a release early Saturday."The other fourteen people were sent to hospitals with a variety of injuries; three of these people have injuries that are critical in nature."No names were released, and police would not say whether players or coaches were among the dead. There was no mention of the truck driver.The team president said parents from across Western Canada were rushing to the scene as they struggled to cope with the tragedy."It's one of the hardest days of my life," said Kevin Garinger. "There have been multiple fatalities — our whole community is in shock, we are grieving and we will continue to grieve throughout this ordeal as we try to work toward supporting each other."Michelle Straschnitzki, who lives in Airdrie, said her 18-year old son Ryan had been taken to a hospital in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan."We talked to him, but he said he couldn't feel his lower extremities so I don't know what's going on," she said. The garage, located along 30th Street, has room for 383 vehicles. According to a recent study, it's rarely ever more than 50% full. That means about 200 spots are going unused."I will watch people come into North Park and circle the parking garage looking for a parking spot, not knowing they're circling a place with 400 available ones," says Angela Landsberg, the Executive Director of North Park Main Street.Landsberg says the garage is often empty because there aren't enough signs letting people know it's there. She also says the only entrance, on 29th Street, makes it hard for people to access. She'd like to see the owners do more to promote it as an option for parking in the area."I think that people are not used to getting out and walking," she says. "The expectation is that we are going to pull up and have parking right next to the businesses that exist and that's not realistic looking forward."The garage charges an hour, with a daily maximum. It also charges flat rates during special events.
