The April 17 tax filing deadline is less than a month away, so if you haven't submitted your return, it's time to get moving. But that's no reason to rush through it.Whether you decide to go it alone or hire a tax preparer to help, make sure you avoid these costly mistakes.1. Making careless errorsBlame it on fat fingers, deadline pressure or plain carelessness, technical errors like the wrong Social Security number, name misspellings or a simple math error can cause problems and delays with your return.Tax software programs can flag errors like this, but every filer should still pay close close attention when reviewing their returns before sending them in, particularly pen-and-paper filers.2. Using the wrong filing statusThere are five filing options: single, married filing jointly, married filing separately, head of household and qualifying widow/widower with dependent child.Choosing the right status is important as it affects how much you pay in taxes. For instance, filing as head of household provides more benefits than married filing separately, explained Mark Steber, chief tax officer of Jackson Hewitt Tax Services.3. Forgetting to report incomeUncle Sam needs to know about all your sources of income last year: your salary, side-hustle cash, retirement withdrawals and gambling winnings. All of it.So don't leave anything out. If you get caught with unclaimed income, you could get hit with major penalties.4. Hiring a pro when you can DIYSome people have very complicated tax situations where an expert needs to be brought in. But many Americans have simple filings that might not require professional assistance, the experts said.If you have an adjusted gross income of ,000 or less, check if you can file your federal taxes for free using the IRS's Free File software options.5. Not taking all eligible deductionsDon't leave money on the table or pay more in taxes than you have to.Take the time to figure out which credits and deductions you're eligible for to reduce your tax liability and get as much back as possible. The IRS isn't going to tell you if you missed a valuable credit you could have claimed, said Steber. The Earned Income Tax Credit, for example, is commonly overlooked, with about one in five eligible taxpayers missing out on it, according to H&R Block. It's a sizeable credit with an average amount of more than ,400.6. Being disorganizedTax forms tend start rolling in at the start of the year that detail your sources of income. Some forms will come in the mail, while others can be retrieved electronically. Just be sure to collect them all before you file.Lisa Greene-Lewis, a CPA and tax expert from Turbo Tax, suggested keeping a folder by your mail so you can instantly drop the paperwork in and keep everything in one place. It's also helpful to keep an updated log throughout the year for things like mileage and charitable donations that you plan to claim on your return.7. ProcrastinatingTax season comes every year, there's no escaping it.While the actual deadline may vary (read why here), you know you have to send in your taxes every April. Yet many Americans scramble to get their returns in.By waiting until the last minute, you increase your risk of mistakes.8. Not filing a returnNot everyone has to file a tax return. But even if you don't have any tax liability, it could be in your best interest to file anyway. The IRS will only issue refunds to filers. So if you had too much federal taxes withheld from your paycheck or are eligible for other credits, you have to file a return to get the money.Earlier this month, the IRS said it had .1 billion in unclaimed federal income tax refunds for around 1 million people who didn't file a tax return in 2014.  3747

The American Automobile Association (AAA) expects at least 34 million less people will travel this holiday season than last year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.Public health concerns and travel guidance are influencing decisions not to travel during a time when people often take vacations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is urging Americans not to go anywhere for the holidays this year, warning that it could increase your chance of getting and spreading COVID-19.Still, AAA projects as many as 84.5 million Americans may travel from Dec. 23 through Jan. 3, a decline of at least 29%.As for methods of travel, AAA says most Americans who do go somewhere in the next few weeks will do so by car, with road trips accounting for 96% of holiday travel. Up to 81 million Americans will travel by car, a decline of at least 25% compared to last year, according to AAA.As has been the trend this year, far less people will fly this holiday season. AAA says as many as 2.9 million travelers are expected to book flights for the holidays, a decline of nearly 60% from 2019.For those who do choose to travel despite the risks, it’s important to take steps that can help keep yourself and others safe.AAA says to plan ahead by checking with state and local officials along your route and at your destination to learn about local guidance and any restrictions in place. That includes what’s expected of you when you return home. Many places require COVID-19 testing prior to and after travel. The CDC recommends taking a COVID-19 test one to three days before travel and another three to five days after travel, in addition to reducing nonessential activities for seven days after traveling. When packing, make sure you include face masks, disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer and a thermometer. It might also be a good idea to pack water and extra snacks to reduce the need to stop along your trip.If you’re staying at a hotel, AAA recommends calling ahead to ensure it’s open and to ask what precautions are being taken to protect guests. If you’re renting a vehicle, you may want to ask about how it’s been cleaned. 2140

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — As the Florida State Seminoles men’s basketball team prepares for their Atlantic Coast Conference showdown with Georgia Tech on Tuesday, the emotions from the events that unfolded in Saturday’s game against Florida Gators are still being felt within this program. When Florida standout junior Keyonate Johnson collapsed on the floor following an early timeout, it sent a numbing silence throughout Tucker Center, followed by a shockwave of emotions that hit the Seminole team hard.On Monday, WTXL learned that FSU head coach Leonard Hamilton was ready to respect whatever decision Florida head coach Mike White and their administration were going to make, even if that meant ending Saturday's game right then and there. It was an unexpected and unfamiliar situation for many to cope with.“My comment was fellas; the only thing we can do right now is to pray for this young man. And immediately I had several players on their knees crying and praying," said Hamilton. "And from a coaching standpoint, we always as human beings respond in relation to the experiences that we’ve had, and we try to relate to situations as a result of things we’ve seen, learned, and experienced. But as a head coach, I’ve never experienced anything like this.”The teams went on to finish the game, which the Seminoles won 83-71.On Monday, the Florida Gators men's basketball team released a statement on Twitter saying Johnson was "following simple commands and undergoing further tests," as he remained in critical but stable condition Monday afternoon. 1560

TAMPA, Fla. — A Tampa man was released from prison on Thursday afternoon after 37 years behind bars for a murder and rape officials now say he didn't commit.Robert DuBoise, 55, walked free after an 11-month investigation by the Conviction Review Unit of the State Attorney’s Office, in collaboration with the Innocence Project, determined he was innocent.“I’m just happy to get home to my family," he said. "It’s a beautiful day.”The first thing DuBoise said he did was hug his mom, Myra, and sister, Harriett. Both women say they never gave up hope.Susan Friedman, an attorney with the Innocence Project, said the motion of release being granted is like "waking up from a nightmare" for DuBoise.WATCH THE FULL PRESS CONFERENCE OF DUBOISE SPEAKING AFTER BEING RELEASED BELOW: 783
