JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi lawmakers are taking steps to erase the Confederate battle emblem from the state flag. The symbol has come under criticism amid nationwide protests against racial injustice. The House voted Saturday to file a bill to remove the symbol that many see as racist. A committee would design a new flag including the words “In God We Trust.” Voters would decide in November whether to endorse that design. Mississippi has used the same flag for more than 125 years. Religious, education, sports and business leaders are pushing legislators to remove the Confederate symbol. Republican Gov. Tate Reeves said Saturday that he will sign a bill to change the flag. 695

It's part of a plan to redevelop the former 76 gas station at Pearl Street and Eads Avenue in downtown La Jolla, a station infamous for charging among the highest gas prices in the city. The station has been closed for about the last two years."It's a blighted area on Pearl," said developer David Bourne. "It needs to be developed, and I think this is the highest and best use."Bourne is proposing to turn the former station into a mixed-use development that could serve as an example of future transit-oriented projects. The least expensive units will start from ,800 to ,000 a month, with the two bedrooms up to ,800. Plus, two affordable units will rent starting at 5 per month, well below La Jolla's average rent of ,545. "It is intended to showcase the way people are living now," Bourne said. "Smaller units, smaller appliances, in an urban area where you can walk everywhere and you probably don't even have a car."The complex would also include 23 parking spaces. KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A man allegedly verbally and physically assaulted a Muslim student at Metropolitan Community College in Kansas City in an incident the FBI is describing as a potential hate crime.The student was walking in a stairwell in the Humanities Building on the campus around 3 p.m. on April 3. The student said she was walking down the stairway when an unknown male voice uttered a derogatory statement toward the woman.When the woman turned around, she said the suspect struck her in the face, causing her to fall down the stairs.The woman reported the incident to campus police, who notified the FBI.In a statement, a Metropolitan Community College spokeswoman says the incident happened on a day that was part of an international campaign to "scare and encourage violence against Muslims."The FBI said Wednesday it’s offering a reward of up to ,000 leading to the arrest of the suspect in the attack.Anyone with information can call the FBI at (816) 512-8200 or the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-8477. 1036

(KGTV) -- The Hollywood Casino Jamul-San Diego is undergoing a name and management change. As of Tuesday, the Hollywood sign came down, making room for the casino’s new name, which is simply Jamul Casino.In March, it was announced that the Jamul Indian Village Development Corporation would take over management of the casino. (KGTV) - Crews worked to clear flooding on the campus of UC San Diego caused by a heavy storm moving through the county.Campus police responded just after 6:30 a.m. and placed sandbags near the entrance of the Student Health and Wellness Center.
