SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A grieving son is speaking out after COVID-19 claimed its first local VA employee.John Martinez started feeling symptoms in early June. First, it was fatigue. Then came a fever and breathing troubles. His son Josh bought him a device to measure his oxygen levels. In mid-June, Josh's heart dropped when he read the device."His oxygen levels were below 80 and then dropped to 70. We got in our truck, took him straight to the hospital," said Martinez.John, an Army and Navy veteran, was taken to the VA Medical Center in La Jolla where he worked. For more than 15 years, he's maintained biomedical equipment like ventilators. When the pandemic started, he wanted to keep working."It was one of those things. The country needs him, so let's step up," said Martinez.A day after John was admitted, he found himself on one of the ventilators he knew so well. Soon after, his kidneys started to fail. His condition deteriorated quickly. More than a week ago, doctors allowed Martinez to visit."Just told him to fight, to keep fighting. I was crying. Just put my hand to the glass, trying to scream through the glass," said Martinez.Less than 2 days later, his father would pass away. John was set to retire after his birthday in late July, at the age of 63. Martinez isn't sure where his father contracted COVID-19 but other family members believe he got it while working."He wanted that benchmark of 63 to retire. He worked for so long and was looking forward to relaxation," said Martinez.Josh says he can only shake his head at the ongoing mask debate, and those who refuse to wear one."It's all good. Just put on your mask. Put the mask on," said Martinez.Josh is hoping to have his father buried at Miramar National Cemetery.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help the family with expenses. 1819

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A brother and sister who own two Rancho Bernardo nail salons were arraigned Thursday on federal charges they were part of a forced labor conspiracy. Cindy Mydung Luu and Jason Luu lured their second cousin from Vietnam to San Diego in 2014 to work long hours in their salons, Eden Nails Lounge & Spa and Majestic Nail Salon, prosecutors said. The woman arrived on a student visa and attended Grossmont College, but applied for a spouse visa after marrying Jason Luu in 2016. Prosecutors said the siblings “engaged in a scheme intended to cause the victim to believe she would suffer financial and reputational harm if she did not continue working.” The siblings own Eden Nails Lounge & Spa and Majestic Nail Salon in Rancho Bernardo.“We are very grateful that this matter came to the attention of the Human Trafficking Task Force upon the suggestion and support of two caring and vigilant nail salon customers who had befriended the victim,” said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. “With their assistance, Task Force officers were able to assist the victim immediately and to investigate these alleged crimes.” The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division also investigated the defendants’ nail salon for minimum wage and overtime violations, according to prosecutors. The Luu’s were arrested at their home in Tierrasanta Thursday morning. They are scheduled to appear in federal court on Jan. 17. 1434

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The three-day winter meeting of the National Council of Legislators from Gaming States will bring nearly four dozen legislators from 20 states to San Diego Friday to discuss the state of the gaming industry and its economic impacts. The three-day meeting at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina is open to the public, and will be attended by state legislators, gaming operators, suppliers, sports executives, attorneys, analysts, regulators and other public officials with stakes in legalized gambling. The winter meeting will include legislative-chaired sessions on tribal and commercial casinos, responsible gaming, and more; master classes on sports betting and tribal-state compacting, and a tour of the Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula.RELATED: Sports betting becomes legal in several states ahead of football season``The participation and attendance of legislators from across the country underscores the importance of the NCLGS semiannual meetings as the only gaming conferences where the legislative decision-makers learn from industry leaders and from each other," said NCLGS President William P. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Surfrider Foundation released its annual Clean Water Report Friday, detailing the measures the organization has taken to improve water quality in San Diego County and quell sewage contamination of local shorelines. The report gives an update on the organization's Blue Water Task Force as well as analysis of water quality case studies in Depoe Bay, Oregon; Oahu, Hawaii; Palm Beach County, Florida; and San Diego. The Blue Water Task Force, Surfrider's volunteer water testing group, has increased its number of water tests by at least 12 percent each of the past seven years, according to the report. Task force volunteers conducted 6,826 water quality tests across the country in 2018. Last year, the Surfrider San Diego chapter's Blue Water Task Force focused primarily on ending sewage runoff into the Tijuana River, which subsequently flows into the Pacific Ocean and affects the county's beaches and coastline. According to the report, sewage contamination caused closures of Imperial Beach's shoreline for roughly half of each year from 2015 to 2017. In 2018, Surfrider San Diego established Blue Water Task Force testing labs in Imperial Beach, Coronado and at the chapter's office west of Mira Mesa to improve local water testing efforts. According to the report, the organization's volunteers collect and test water samples each Thursday along the shoreline from Imperial Beach to Pacific Beach. ``In areas like San Diego, California, where communities are impacted year-round by cross-border water pollution ... Surfrider's work to protect clean water is more critical than ever,'' said Mara Dias, the organization's water quality manager. ``Our chapters are tackling regional water quality issues by testing for pollution, building ocean friendly solutions, and informing the public where it's safe to surf, swim and play in the ocean." Surfrider San Diego filed a lawsuit against the U.S. section of the International Boundary and Water Commission last year, alleging that the body has repeatedly violated the Clean Water Act and put the health and safety of local residents in jeopardy by improperly managing the pollution from the Tijuana River. The cities of Imperial Beach and Chula Vista and the Port of San Diego have joined Surfrider's lawsuit, while the city of San Diego and California Attorney General Xavier Becerra have filed a similar suit against the IBWC. The latter suit is expected to go to trial in April 2020. 2472
