While we're all focused on COVID-19 as we head back to school this fall, Patti Wukovits is focusing on Meningitis B.“She loved to entertain and make people laugh. She enjoyed life. When I think of Kim the one word that comes to mind is joy,” said Wukovits. It's still painful for Wukovits to talk about her only daughter. Kimberly Coffey was a high school senior who was in her last two weeks of school. She'd been accepted to nursing school and was ready to launch her career. She wanted to follow in her mom's footsteps and be a nurse. One day she came home from school with a fever.“By the next morning she wasn’t fine at all. She said 'mommy everything hurts from my eyelashes to my toes.' This is really, really bad. She couldn’t pull her head off the pillow and was completely lethargic,” Wukovits recounted. Kimberly told her mom that it felt like her ankles were bleeding. Patti saw purple dots and rushed her daughter to the emergency room. “One of the doctors pulled me aside and said 'we believe your daughter had bacterial meningitis.' I said 'That’s not possible. I made sure Kim was vaccinated with the meningitis vaccine.'”She learned that Kim wasn't fully protected. "At the time, in 2012, when she got sick we didn’t have a Meningitis B vaccine in the United States so I couldn’t protect her with that. She didn’t have the privilege of having a Meningitis B vaccine."Doctor Paul Offit, Professor of Pediatrics at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia says it's a vaccine that's necessary and reduces your chances of the type of pain, loss and suffering that Patti lives with everyday.“There’s five different strains that causes these, one vaccine prevents 4 of them: a, c, w, y and then there’s a b category, so 5- A, c, y,w and b. A few of the vaccines just do a c w and y and couple just do b, so 2 vaccines to prevent all 5 strains,” said Dr. Offit. Wukovits says, "her organs were failing and she was in septic shock and she went into cardiac arrest this is a child who was just in her classroom the day before talking with her friends about prom and how her beautiful dress was on her closet door and excited about graduation and starting nursing school.”Out of Kimberly's tragedy - came the Kimberly Coffey Foundation and the Meningitis B Action Project. “I am promoting awareness of her story so that this does not happen to anyone else. It does not have to happen any longer, we have a vaccine and it should not be happening. We shouldn’t lose one more child. But again, if parents don’t know about it we might not know to ask about it,” Wukovits said.Even in the COVID-19 era, Wukovits is doing webinars, educating everyone about the two separate vaccines, and empowering parents and families to have the conversation before they head back to school this fall. “I know we’re making a difference I know that. Kimberly’s dream was to be a pediatric nurse and save children’s lives and this is not how she or I planned she would save children’s lives but she still is and through me. I’m her voice.”A powerful message from a mom on a mission to save lives, just like Kim would have wanted. 3118

When the delayed Tokyo Games kick-off next year, the opening and closing ceremonies will be “simpler and more restrained,” according to the organizing committee. In an announcement Tuesday, the group said they were reorganizing their staff in charge of planning the symbolic, and in recent years large-scale, productions. Hiroshi Sasaki will now head up planning the events. While making no mention of how the ceremonies’ formats will be modified, the group said they will still be a celebration and reflect the “overall simplification of the Games” while still taking into consideration the need for COVID-19 safety measures. The new productions are expected to add roughly million (US) to the cost of the opening and closing ceremonies, according to organizers. The 2020Tokyo Games were supposed to happen this summer. However, as the coronavirus spread around the world, the games were postponed in March to 2021.“We are working to deliver Opening and Closing Ceremonies that will be in tune with the situation next summer. The ceremonies will still be a great celebration to be enjoyed by the athletes and watching world but will likely take a simpler and more restrained approach designed to reflect the overall simplification of the Games and the potential need to still consider COVID-19 countermeasures,” the Tokyo Games Organizing Committee said in a statement.Sasaki is no stranger to Olympic ceremonies, he was responsible for the flag handover ceremony at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and directed the one-year countdown event held in Tokyo this summer.“With Mr. (Hiroshi) Sasaki’s support, we will stage Opening and Closing Ceremonies that will be remembered for many years to come as symbols of the unity and symbiosis of humankind in its overcoming of the COVID-19 pandemic,” the committee stated. The Tokyo Olympics are now planned to open on July 23, 2021. 1884

West Virginia legislators scrambled Monday to see whether there is enough money to meet teacher pay demands and end a strike that has dragged into its eighth day.A legislative conference committee appointed to resolve differences between the state Senate and House is scheduled to meet at 4 p.m."We recognize the urgency of this situation," said Delegate Paul Espinosa, chair of the House Education Committee and co-chair of the conference committee on House Bill 4145, the pay raise legislation.Gov. Jim Justice and the union leaders last week agreed that teachers and service personnel would receive a 5% pay raise. The House approved the proposal, but the Senate passed a 4% raise. Union leaders say the teachers won't return to work until they get a 5% raise.Espinosa said he has been speaking with his counterpart in the Senate, Majority Leader Ryan Ferns, "on how we would like to proceed with the committee's work to resolve the differences" between the Senate and the House of Delegates.Democrats in the Legislature say new revenue projections show the money is there and that a 5% raise would amount to million more in spending than a 4% bump."This situation has evolved very quickly in recent days, and we want to make sure committee members have a full array of accurate information available to make a well-informed decision," Espinosa said.."To accomplish that, we have instructed our respective Finance Committee staffs to pull data and put together the necessary fiscal information, and have separately reached out to the Governor's Office staff to ask for more budgetary information from the executive branch."West Virginia public school teachers are continuing their strike because the Legislature didn't meet their demand for higher pay and better benefits over the weekend. All 55 counties announced school closures for Monday. About 20,000 teachers walked out February 22, keeping almost 277,000 students out of class.West Virginia public school teachers earn an average salary of about ,000, making them among the lowest paid educators in the United States. School service personnel are also walking out.The pay raise must be passed as a law, since West Virginia is not a collective bargaining state. The House bill with the 5% raise quickly passed Wednesday, but Senate lawmakers expressed concern about how the state will fund the raise and passed the 4% version on Saturday after hours of debate and discussion. The House voted not to adopt the 4% version of the bill. With no agreement between the chambers, the conference committee was created. Three members from the House and three from the Senate -- two Republicans and one Democrat -- were selected. The group has until Tuesday to come to a decision about the bill. The House and the Senate could extend that deadline. If a meeting of the minds eventually fails, an earlier law specifying a 2% raise for teachers' pay would kick in, and then 1% over two years. The issue of teachers' pay isn't restricted to West Virginia. In Oklahoma, public school teachers are considering a statewide strike over their salaries.West Virginia teachers are equally unhappy with their employee health insurance program. Tentative agreements on pay did not include a fix to the Public Employees Insurance Agency (PEIA), which employees say requires them to pay premiums that are too high.A task force on the health insurance issue meets March 13. 3419

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders on Tuesday defended President Donald Trump's silence on allegations leveled against him by porn star Stormy Daniels, maintaining that while the President is a "counter-puncher," he doesn't necessarily punch back at every story.Daniels, whose legal name is Stephanie Clifford, has saturated the news in recent days, after Anderson Cooper interviewed her over her alleged affair with Trump on CBS' "60 Minutes." Trump so far declined to respond to her on Twitter or otherwise, a rarity for a President who rarely holds back.Sanders said even though she has previously described Trump as a "counter-puncher," she didn't say he "punches back on every single topic.""If he did he would probably be addressing a lot of the stories that most of you write every single minute of every single day," Sanders told reporters. "He also has a country to run. And he is doing a great job with that. ... Sometimes he chooses to specifically engage and punch back and sometimes he doesn't."Trump's terse Twitter persona has targeted everyone from Rosie O'Donnell and the cast of Hamilton to his political enemies and one-time friends. But the President has been advised that lashing out on the Daniels story will only make it worse, a tact he is also taking with Karen McDougal, a former Playboy model who recently recounted in a CNN interview the details of what she alleges was a lengthy affair with the then-businessman.Trump has denied both women's claims.Daniels, in her interview with 60 Minutes, alleged that shortly after she tried to sell her story about her alleged affair with the now-President, a man approached her in the parking lot of a fitness center."And a guy walked up on me and said to me, 'Leave Trump alone. Forget the story,' " Daniels said. "And then he leaned around and looked at my daughter and said, 'That's a beautiful little girl. It'd be a shame if something happened to her mom.' And then he was gone."Daniels, as part of a hush agreement, was paid 0,000 by Trump's longtime personal lawyer Michael Cohen days before the 2016 election. Daniels said she was risking a million fine for potentially violating her nondisclosure agreement "because it was very important to me to be able to defend myself."Sanders once again denied the allegations leveled by Daniels, but declined to get into the details of the porn star's allegations or the payoff she received."That is a question you would have to ask the President's attorney," Sanders said. "I certainly cannot speak for him. I can only speak on behalf of the White House."Pushed on the matter, Sanders stood her ground and declined to comment."The President has denied the allegations," Sanders said. "Anything beyond that I would refer you to the outside counsel and his attorney." 2823
