SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Restaurants up and down 5th Avenue in the Gaslamp District are gearing up for yet another three days of crowded on-street dining.This upcoming weekend will see 24 eateries offering service on the asphalt, up from the original eight that participating during the launch on June 18. But as they bask in the opportunity, restaurants on surrounding streets are asking - what about them?"It's a ghost town, especially at night," said Patrizia Bronchi, who owns Operacaffe on Fourth Avenue. "I'm really scared to have to close the restaurant because it's not possible to go on like this."Bronchi says revenue at Operacaffe is down more than 70 percent. She depends on crowds from the Balboa Theater across the street and visitors to hotels and conventions. All of that is nonexistent amid the Coronavirus outbreak.Bronchi says she is happy that 5th Avenue restaurants are seeing the increased business, but that the crowds are not spilling over onto 4th Avenue. Michael Trimble, who heads the Gaslamp Quarter Association, says the group cannot also close 4th and 6th Avenues due to traffic concerns.However, he said the association wants to help with new marketing, decorative lighting and parklets - such as replacing some parking spaces with permanent outdoor dining areas. "We really are trying to do what we can to support all of the merchants in the Gaslamp Quarter," he said. On Thursday to Saturday, 5th Avenue will be closed from L to F streets to allow on-street dining. During the second weekend of July, the number of participating restaurants will expand to 27. 1595

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police have identified the man killed in an officer-involved shooting this week in Mountain View.Police said 39-year-old Jose Alfredo Castro-Gutierrez was shot and killed after officers responded to the 300 block of South Pardee Street just before 5 a.m. on Monday over reports of a violent disturbance involving a weapon.According to SDPD, Castro-Gutierrez was staying at a home as a guest when the residents were woken up by him. He had reportedly been acting paranoid and ripped a metal curtain rod from a window and began breaking windows and other objects in the home.RELATED: San Diego Police shoot, kill vandalism suspect in Mountain ViewWhen police arrived, they saw Castro-Gutierrez in the front window and could hear him breaking objects and yelling inside.SDPD says officers gave directions in English and Spanish to try and communicate with Castro-Gutierrez but got no response. Eventually, Castro-Gutierrez crawled out of a broken window and made his way to the front of the property where officers were.Police said Castro-Gutierrez began to run at full speed toward them with the metal pole, prompting three officers to fire their weapons at him: One officer fired a bean bag round, another officer fired a Taser, and a third officer fired several rounds from his service pistol, SDPD says.Castro-Gutierrez was hit by at least one round and fell to the ground. Officers started first aid at the scene, but Castro-Gutierrez was pronounced dead at the hospital.The officer who fired his service pistol was identified as Isai Castillo, a two-year veteran of SDPD assigned to Southeastern Division.SDPD's homicide unit is currently investigating the shooting, after which the San Diego County District Attorney's Office will review the case to determine if the officers bear any criminal liability. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County has been told by state officials it will be placed on California's watch list for coronavirus cases on Friday, after the region reported another record number of cases.San Diego County's COVID-19 cases increased from 103.8 to 112.8 cases per 100,000 residents on Thursday, passing the state's threshold of 100 cases per 100,000 residents. The region's inclusion on the list was fueled by 584 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, a 7% positive rate out of 8,510 reported tests, according to county data. 544

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Rideshare drivers all over California are on strike protesting recent pay cuts by both Uber and Lyft. A small but vocal group of the drivers gathered at the San Diego airport Monday morning, opting to take part in a statewide protest against the companies they say are taking money out of their pockets. Recently, Uber announced it would be cutting drivers wage from 80 cents per mile to 60 cents. Workers say that’s on top of other cuts they’ve dealt with over the years. Drivers who spoke with 10News say other states like New York require companies to pay a minimum rate of more than per hour. Uber and Lyft both issued statements after the protest.Uber said in part, “…we're introducing a new Quest promotion feature, while also changing the per minute, per mile and minimum fare rates. These changes will make rates comparable to where they were in September."Lyft told 10News: "We are always open to conversations around how we can make Lyft better for drivers, but what we hear from the majority is that this is a flexible option that works for them." 1090

Gavin Newsom's office on Monday, asking that comedy clubs in San Diego be allowed to reopen safely.The letter requests that performances be allowed to reopen in outdoor settings, with shows lasting no longer than an hour."We're not talking about concerts here where thousands of people are sitting next to each other," Cate said. "These are performances that are done while folks and individuals are having dinner in a restaurant setting, properly distanced, why should they be treated any differently?"Earlier this month, some comedy clubs, like The Comedy Palace in Kearney Mesa, moved their comedy shows outdoors, only to find out they were in violation of public health orders and made to stop.George Salek, co-owner of The Comedy Place, said they have a lot of outdoor space, and people were able to observe social distancing."Eighty people is what we're trying to put in 5,000 square feet," he said.
