SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police have arrested a man they say tried to sexually assault a woman in Little Italy before stealing her car. Police say the man, identified as Christopher Merron, 28, was arrested Monday on several charges, including assault with intent to commit a sex crime, brandishing a deadly weapon and auto theft. According to police, the incident happened on the 1700 block of India Street at 4:33 a.m. Sunday.RELATED: Man tries to sexually assault woman before stealing her car in Little Italy, police sayPolice say the man walked into Cafe Italia while the victim was cleaning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Monday afternoon, two brothers were sentenced in connection to the deadly freeway shooting of a Navy sailor who stopped to be a good Samaritan.Edson Acuna and Brandon Acuna learned their sentences following the 2018 shooting death of Navy sailor Curtis Adams. Edson Acuna was given a term of life without the possibility of parole plus 25 years to life plus 27 years and four months. He was ordered to pay ,000 in restitution and pay for associated fines. “He's going to be in prison for the rest of his life until he takes his last breath and I think that will give him time to pay these from prison wages,” the judge told the courtroom.Edson Acuna was convicted by jury of first degree murder while Brandon Acuna pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. On Monday, Brandon Acuna was sentenced to 13 years in prison.Prosecutors argued that they burglarized a car outside of a Mount Hope home which led to a shootout with the homeowner. They tried to get away but a blown-out tire caused them to stall on the freeway. Adams stopped to help but Edson Acuna shot him after thinking that he was the homeowner from the shootout earlier in the night.Harvey Liberato and Susana Galvan were also in the brothers’ car and have entered plea agreements.The judge concluded the hearing by telling the courtroom that he hopes both men reflect in the years to come on the magnitude of the loss that their actions caused. 1441

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One of the San Diego Zoo's oldest residents was euthanized due to age-related illnesses Wednesday.The zoo's male African lion, M'bari, had been suffering from a degenerative kidney, large kidney cyst, and spinal arthritis and under veterinary care before the decision was made to put him down, according to park spokesperson Andrew Jones.At 15-years-old, M'bari had exceeded expectations of a lion's average lifespan, which is about 10 years in the wild and can exceed 25 years in captivity, according to the zoo."In recent days, his condition had steadily worsened, despite attempts by animal care staff to modify his habitat to make him more comfortable," a statement from the zoo read. "This morning, because of his worsening quality of life, animal care staff made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize him."M'bari was introduced to locals at the San Diego Wild Animal Park in 2004 with the opening of Lion Camp when he was about two years old. He eventually moved to the San Diego Zoo in 2009, and has most recently lived with his mate, Etosha, in the Harry and Grace Steele Elephant Odyssey habitat. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- People around the world are rallying for Navy EOD Tech Chief Petty Officer Kenton Stacy, critically injured in Syria.Five months and nearly 20 surgeries later, he still has a long recovery ahead.Stacy was in Syria clearing a hospital of IEDs when the explosion happened. At the time doctors gave him a two percent chance of survival.Stacy's brave comrades helped pull him from the rubble and to safety. One of them, Staff Sergeant Justin Peck, was honored by President Trump during his State of the Union address.Stacy is paralyzed from the neck down and blind in his left eye. He suffered extensive damage to his lungs, vocal chords trachea. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On the edge of Balboa Park, parkgoers arrived Wednesday to a fresh layer of graffiti across a popular playground area.Joanne Schara leads a boot camp class at Bird Park at Upas three times a week. After a year of working out there, the things that drew her are now awash in graffiti. "It's just sad to see. You come here because you want a happy space. People bring their kids. People bring their pets. Its beautiful," said Schara.The tagging is everywhere, from the tables and benches and the wall wrapping around the playground area to utility boxes and graffiti on the ground."Doesn't give a good image at all," said Schara.Cathy Lea has lived in the neighborhood for 40 years and takes her dogs to the park twice a day."When I see the graffiti, it's disheartening," said Schara.Lea says every few days, there is more graffiti. On the concrete wall that surrounds the park, there are countless layers of tagging that have been painted over, only to be tagged again."That's not what this park is about," said Lea.On the Nextdoor app, some longtime neighbors posted the current graffiti is the "worst they've ever seen." Lately the graffiti has started to creep into areas previously untouched, including the playground set and the nearby rocks. As the tagging spreads, so does the frustration."It's not the kind of message we want to be sending in North Park," said Lea.Several neighbors have posted on the city's Get It Done app to get it cleaned up.
