DULZURA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Three fires burned in rural East County Wednesday afternoon as Cal Fire worked to extinguish the flames. According to Cal Fire, all three of the fires sparked in the community of Dulzura along Highway 94 between Otay Lakes Road and Freezer Road. Video of the blaze shows traffic in the area backed up for several miles after crews closed Highway 94 between Otay Lakes Road and Barrett Lake Road. Around 5:30 p.m., Cal Fire said crews were able to stop the forward rate of spread of all three fires. In total, all three fires burned slightly less than 32 acres. Sky10 was live over the fire. Earlier this week, both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration investigate an outbreak of salmonella infections across multiple states, possibly linked to imported wood ear mushrooms.The agencies said consumers should be on notice when ordering food with mushrooms because the dry mushrooms, which were likely imported by Wismettac Asian Foods, Inc. of Santa Fe Springs, California, could cause salmonella infections.The agencies say the dry mushrooms were shipped to restaurants in 31 states and Washington, D.C."Consumers can ask restaurants where mushrooms are from before ordering to avoid eating recalled mushrooms," the FDA said.The CDC says 41 reported cases of the salmonella infection in 10 states, and four people have been hospitalized.On its website, Wismettac Asian Foods said they voluntarily recall the 5-pound bags of dried fungus imported from China. 920

(KGTV) - The owners of the Cottonwood Golf Club in El Cajon have filed an application with the county to convert the property into a sand mine.Details were revealed at the Valle del Oro community planning group meeting earlier this month.The proposal calls for a three-phase mining operation over 10 years.The first phase would take place on the course west of the Steele Canyon bridge, which has already been closed to golfers.Sand is needed as a component of concrete, which has become scarcer during the construction boom of the past decade.The mine would produce a maximum of 570,000 tons a year, creating an estimated 170 heavy truck round trips a day from the site.The property is owned by Beverly Hills real estate agent Michael Schlesinger, who also owns the shuttered golf courses at Stoneridge Country Club and Escondido Country Club.10News reached out to EnviroMine, the consulting company involved in the plan. EL CAJON (CNS) - A man suffered life-threatening injuries when he was shot multiple times, possibly at a two-vehicle traffic crash in El Cajon, a police lieutenant said With details still sketchy, a little after 9:45 p.m. Saturday police received several calls of loud noises in the area of the 1500 block of East Washington Avenue, where officers discovered a man who appeared to have suffered multiple gunshot wounds, said El Cajon police Lt. Walt Miller.Paramedics rushed him to an area hospital and officers also discovered a two-vehicle traffic crash in the same area.Multiple people fled from the crash, Miller said. EL CAJON (KGTV) - After 50 years of service, the well-known San Diego Highway Man is retiring. Thomas Weller has been helping thousands of people stuck on the side of the road since 1966. He tells 10News he started helping after a man helped him in a blizzard when he was a teenager living in Illinois.“I was on my way home about one or two in the morning and the blizzard put me off the road into a snow bank," said Weller.Weller says he never forgot that moment and hoped to be that saving grace for many others. Turns out he tells us he’s lost track of how many people he’s helped.“More than ten thousand, it's just I never keep track.” Weller had a stroke back in March and since then decided it’s best given his limited capabilities to retire.“I’ve lost my strength and my agility, not my judgment yet because I’m still driving.” He tells 10News it’s for the best that he retires because of how increasingly dangerous distracted driving has made the roads."It’s just extremely dangerous out there, more so now than it used to be.”While he is giving up one of his favorite passions in life, he isn’t giving up his outlook on life, “the most beautiful compensations of this life you cannot sincerely help another without helping yourself in the bargain.” 1266
