SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It looks like a mini farmer's market: fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, even flowers. All of it coming from home gardens like Rosemary McElroy's. She and her fiancé Kevin Rookey love having fresh produce in their own backyard but, "we realized everyone has way more produce when you grow it than you can actually consume."The couple posted on the Nextdoor App, thinking maybe other neighbors wanted to trade.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Reverse meal planning saves woman hundreds on grocery billThe response was so overwhelming, McElroy decided to organize a meet-up."This is around Lake Murray, let's host it at Lake Murray, we'll call it Lake Murray Produce just to give it a name," said McElroy. So far they've done three swaps, once a month for about an hour. Each time more and more people show up, able to walk away with organic produce for free and make sure nothing goes to waste.RELATED: Ocean Beach duo cook up 'foodie' meals on a day budget"When you have 500 oranges on a tree and you're not eating THem you feel guilt, right? "It really was."Shortly after, Philbin landed his first talk show, "The Regis Philbin Show," which was filmed in the ABC 10News studios where the current newscasts are produced.Philbin acted as his own writer, producer, and show guest booker. The move catapulted his stardom garnering him national attention.WATCH VIDEO REPORT: Broadcasting legend Regis Philbin visits his old home at 10NewsTelevision audiences across the country started to tune in to Philbin's zestful personality, warmth, and signature self-deprecating humor leading to ratings success on his show "Live!". For nearly three decades, he shared co-hosting duties on the show alongside Kathie Lee Gifford and Kelly Ripa before he left in 2011. He also made a mark on primetime television as host of the popular game show, "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" Philbin holds the Guinness World Record for most hours on television.Laura Cain, a long-time local radio traffic reporter, met Philbin in 2001 when she won a contest and got the opportunity to fly to New York and be his co-host for the day. Cain says it was his friendly personality, that she’ll remember most."It brought back all the memories of when I hosted the show with him and what a great person he was I’m sad. I’m really sad,” says Cain. "He was the most kind man. He was a small man. But so handsome and I just remember thinking after I had left that I had known him my whole life. That’s how he made you feel. I felt equal to him. It was a special moment for me."And that’s the same way Fred Norfleet described Philbin, who he worked with for years as a stage manager on his San Diego morning show."I’m sure he had a heart for San Diego you now. Everybody knew him. Everybody liked him. I can’t think of anybody who would ever say a bad word about Regis Philbin," Norfleet said.Norfleet says he's sad to hear of Philbin's passing but adds he's glad he got the opportunity to work with him, as he truly was one of a kind, who had a big heart, and a smile no one can ever forget.Watch video of Philbin's visit to 10News below: 3256

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In just hours, Rady Children's Hospital is expected to get their first shipment of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. It is unclear how many doses the hospital will receive, but once they arrive they will be stored in ultra low temperature freezers, until they are given to hospital staff. FedEx is in charge of making the historic delivery. The hospital's chief operating officer, Dr. Nicholas Holmes, says most of the hospital's staff wants to get the vaccine. It will not be mandated, since it's only approved for emergency use. The first to get the vaccine at the hospital will be front-line healthcare workers in the 1-A category. The category includes physicians, respiratory therapists, nurses, and other staff who have high chances of exposure to the virus. Dr. Holmes says a team at the hospital spent the last four days planning the logistics for distribution. Staff working in the same departments will get the vaccines on a rolling basis, just in case they experience side effects and to prevent an entire department from having to miss work at once. Once the staff receives it's first dose, they'll get a second dose 21 days later. 1166

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It can take close to 30 years for a renter in San Diego to save enough money for the down payment on a home.Experts say there are ways to speed up the process.Jennifer and Allan Uy just bought a home for their family of four but to make that possible, they moved in with Jennifer’s parents to save money. They paid off ,000 in debt and saved ,000 for the down payment.“It’s actually like adjusting in terms of watching television, and they had like the Disney Channel on, and we had to take turns so I could watch the news,” said Jennifer’s father.According to Hot Pads, it takes 28 years for a San Diego renter to save enough to put down 20 percent on a median-priced home. Moving in with parents can cut that down to 12 years.Relying on relatives may not be an option for many San Diegans.Todd Lane, president and CEO of California Coast Credit Union, says you don’t necessarily need to save as much money if you have a higher income.“Look for a program out there with a mortgage lender that offers you the option for not having to pay for mortgage insurance and making less than 20 percent down payment that’s really the key,” said Lane.Lane also suggests you avoid making big purchases prior to applying for a home loan.“Don’t just go out and borrow for a car loan just before your gonna go out and get an home loan; keep that older car,” Lane recommended.Financial adviser Dennis Brewster said aiming for a condo instead of a home is a great way to get in the home buying game.“Anything to start building the equity helps – instead of paying rent,” said Brewster.Other pro tips include using 401K investments for a down payment, or having relatives co-sign the loan. 1704
