NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Joseph Webster was in his 20s when he was convicted for a first-degree murder he didn't commit. At 41 years old, the father of four is readjusting to his newly granted freedom.Webster was released on Tuesday after a Davidson County judge ruled to vacate his murder conviction. New DNA evidence and key witnesses with different accounts of the incident helped solidify the decision.It's the first time a person was exonerated of murder because of his innocence in Nashville, according to attorney Daniel Horwitz."It's unbelievable but believable," Webster said. "The truth will set you free. I just didn't know when."Webster was sentenced to life in prison 15 years ago for the beating death of Leroy Owens in 1998. Horwitz helped uncover new evidence alongside the Davidson County Criminal Review Unit that points to a different suspect.Webster always maintained his innocence and never wavered from his hope that one day he'd get out of prison."It's a rare entity within the district attorney's office. Wrongful convictions are fairly rare, but they do occur," Horwitz said.In early 2019, Davidson County District Attorney Glenn Funk said he would reopen the case after new testing revealed that Webster's DNA was not found on the murder weapon. The only witness in the case allegedly changed her story several times, and at times the testimony pointed to a different suspect.In late October, Webster's attorney announced that Funk had vacated his sentence after a reinvestigation by the Conviction Review board, which cleared the way for Webster's possible release."The Conviction Review Unit no longer has confidence in the conviction of Mr. Webster," the motion stated. "We recommend Mr. Webster's conviction be vacated and the charges against him dismissed."With the victim's family in the courtroom, the state said there was no other option but to free Webster.Seconds after he could walk free, Webster's mother and children swarmed him with hugs and tears. He said he's been laying low and hanging out with loved ones who helped keep his strength over the years.Webster said there are others in his position without a support system. He eventually wants to his use experience to speak to teenagers about life in prison and to stay out of trouble.In the meantime, he wants to reconnect with society and heal from years of emotional, mental and physical stress."I just want to see the other side, and I just want to be happy and enjoy life," he said.He spent part of his day Thursday trying to get a driver's license with his attorney. Webster wants to rent his own apartment, get a commercial driver's license, and start a trucking business with his children.Horwitz said there are currently no plans to pursue restitution, but he has started a GoFundMe to help raise money for Webster.Money raised above the goal will be donated to the Innocence Project. MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, put a national spotlight on systemic racism and social inequities. Just a few weeks later, the state’s unemployment rate for people of color is further hitting home how real and current those issues are.“It’s really shocking that number is the way that it is,” said Kimberly Jones.Jones is an African American woman and was a Minnesota-based flight attendant recruiter, who lost her job in March.According to data from Minnesota’s Department of Employment and Economic Development, she is a part of the half of all Black workers in the state who have lost their jobs and have had to file for unemployment during the past five months. Right now, Black workers in Minnesota are almost three times as likely to still be unemployed, compared to white workers. That’s significantly higher than the national average, which also shows Black workers across the country struggling with unemployment at a higher rate than white workers.“We have been suffering and going through this kind of social inequity for so long,” said Jones. “It is sad to say you almost get used to the norm. I get used to the redlining. I get used to not being able to get a job. I get used to the discrimination. My hope is that with everything that has happened together the way that it has, it will begin to shed light on things that absolutely have to change.”The issue of people of color having disproportionately higher unemployment in Minnesota and around the country is not a new issue or one just isolated to this economic downturn, according to experts like William Rodgers with Rutgers University. Rodgers is the Chief Economist and a Professor of Public Policy at Rutgers’ Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy.“The big concern there that I have is that this is potentially writing the same rules we have seen in previous recessions,” said Rodgers. “African Americans, Latinos, and other groups, but especially African Americans, they are the first ones to be fired and they are the last ones to be hired when there is a recovery.”Given the recent national awareness and concern over systemic inequities for people of color, there is action being taken to change the course of history this time.“Employers need deep help in addressing the institutional racism that exists within their walls and to determine really what kind of actions they can take to really start to create new policies and practices and new ways of being as it relates to how they hire talent,” said Towanna Black.Black is the Founder and CEO of Minnesota’s Center of Economic Inclusion. Her organization recently created several new positions to help private companies and other employers address their role in this inequity and unemployment disparity.“We do an assessment upfront that helps employers understand, almost across 200 dimensions, what is happening inside your business and how those policies and practices either help your employees move forward economically or hold them back,” said Black. “We are glad to say that employers, not only in Minneapolis/St. Paul but across the country are reaching out.”While employers work on change, someone like Jones has changed her mind about returning to the workforce that historically has worked against her and other people of color. She has instead decided to work on a nonprofit passion project, turning her home into a shelter for woman called The Genesis House Service Corporation. 3489

(KGTV) -- A mother of three shown in a video being detained by Customs and Border Protection agents was released Tuesday on her own recognizance.Shortly after 9 p.m. Perla Morales-Luna and her daughters shared a tearful reunion. A judge said that Morales-Luna, 36, isn’t a danger to society or a flight risk. During the family's reunion, she did say "Thank you" to the press but had no further comment. The video showing Luna’s detention made rounds on social media earlier in March. Most Americans will spend more to heat their homes this winter, according to the US Energy Information Administration, part of the Department of Energy.As coronavirus pandemic safety measures continue around the country, more Americans will be spending more time in their homes this winter compared to previous years. Spending more time in the home for work and school plus the projected forecast for a colder winter, could combine for an increase in natural gas, electricity and propane heating costs.“EIA generally expects more space heating demand this winter compared with last winter based on forecasts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that indicate colder winter temperatures. U.S. average heating degree days in this forecast are 5% higher than last winter,” the agency stated.The EIA is projecting households will spend about 6 percent more than last year if they use natural gas, 7 percent more if they use electricity and between 12-18 percent more than last year if using propane for heat this winter.Those using heating oil could see a decrease of about 10 percent this year over their heating bills last year, according to the agency.In their short-term energy outlook report, the EIA also said renewable sources of electricity will grow in 2020 and into next year.“EIA forecasts that renewable energy will be the fastest-growing source of electricity generation in 2020. EIA expects the U.S. electric power sector will add 23.3 gigawatts (GW) of new wind capacity in 2020 and 7.3 GW of new capacity in 2021,” the report stated.They also expect a 26 percent decrease in US coal production in 2020.“COVID-19 and efforts to mitigate it along with reduced demand from the U.S. electric power sector amid low natural gas prices have contributed to mine idling and mine closures,” they stated.The agency is also projecting a 10 percent decrease in US energy-related carbon dioxide emissions in 2020, as a result of reduced consumption of fossil fuels.
