He knew Americans returning from World War II were starting families and needed somewhere to stock up on nursery decor.But before long, Lazarus discovered that the real money was not in cribs, but in toys.Toys break, or go out of fashion — which means parents need to go to the store more often, Toys "R" Us explains in its online company history.In 1957, Lazarus opened his first store stocked only with toys. It was modeled after a supermarket, with items stocked high on shelves and a wide assortment of choices. He named it Toys "R" Us — with a backwards "R" in the logo that was supposed to look it it was drawn by a kid.The mainstays of the iconic Toys "R" Us marketing campaigns emerged over the next two decade. But the costs were "astronomical," Silver said.On shaky ground, Toys "R" Us was taken private by a group of private equity firms in 2005. Bain Capital, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and Vornado Realty Trust bought the company for .6 billion.Saddled with debt, the store was not able to pour enough money into necessary, innovative changes. By the time Amazon ruled the online shopping ecosystem, Toys "R" Us was lightyears behind — despite an early partnership with Amazon in 2000. The agreement to jointly sell toys online ultimately went sour and ended after a court fight."Walmart had a better online experience. Target had a better online experience," Silver said. "They lost online and they didn't adapt."In 2015, Toys "R" Us closed its Times Square mega-store. It was the beginning of the end.A dismal 2017 holiday season was the death knell. FRANKLIN, Indiana — Authorities in Indiana are warning people of a scam involving a person who is claiming to be a sheriff's deputy in order to deceive people into sending money.According to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, a woman came to the Johnson County Jail on Wednesday who said while she was at work she received a call from an individual who claimed to be a sheriff's deputy.The individual told the woman she had a warrant for her arrest due to failure to appear for jury duty selection. The suspect told the woman if she wanted to avoid arrest she needed to pay the fines by purchasing ,000 worth of Apple Store gift cards. The suspect also told the woman she would need to go to the sheriff's office with her receipts to prove her identity.After making the initial purchase in pre-paid gift cards, the suspect informed the woman 0 was not transferred, according to the sheriff's office. The suspect reportedly told the woman to purchase another 0 in pre-paid Apple gift cards. The woman said she was on the phone with the suspect for approximately two hours until all the transactions were made and confirmed. She then drove to the sheriff's office where she was informed she was the victim of a scam.The woman was distraught and told deputies she is recently divorced and the money used from her saving account was being saved for her children's Christmas gifts. 1413

For the first time in American history, the House of Representatives has voted to decriminalize marijuana The measure, which was backed by Democrats and Republicans, passed 228-164. The bill, known as The MORE Act, would eliminate the penalties that exist at the federal level for possession and use of marijuana. It also would create a pathway for Americans convicted of federal marijuana charges to have those charges expunged. 438

Former Arkansas high school teacher Jessie Lorene Goline, 25, is accused by law enforcement of having sexual relations with four high school students in 2016, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported. Goline was formally charged on Wednesday with one count of first degree sexual assault, according to online court records. The Democrat-Gazette reported that only one of the four students were under 18 at the time of the encounters. Authorities told the Democrat-Gazette that Goline allegedly had sex with two students she had taken to her apartment on the same day.In the affidavit, Goline believed one of the students was 18 but he was not. Three of the male students were from the Marked Tree School District, and one was from the East Poinsett County School District. They told authorities that they received text messages from Goline, and that their conversations became more sexual over time. Authorities learned of the alleged incidents in April when a parent threatened to “do bodily harm to one of their teachers.” That's when one of the parents came forward. Goline, who was released later on Wednesday, faces a judge in October.  1217
