A tetraplegic man has been able to move all four of his paralyzed limbs by using a brain-controlled robotic suit, researchers have said.The 28-year-old man from Lyon, France, known as Thibault, was paralyzed from the shoulders down after falling 40 feet from a balcony, severing his spinal cord, the AFP news agency reported.He had some movement in his biceps and left wrist, and was able to operate a wheelchair using a joystick with his left arm.Researchers from the University of Grenoble in France, biomedical research center Clinatec and the CEA research center implanted recording devices on either side of Thibault's head, between the brain and skin, to span the sensorimotor cortex -- the area of the brain that controls motor function and sensation.Electrode grids collected the man's brain signals and transmitted them to a decoding algorithm, which translated the signals into movements and commanded a robotic exoskeleton to complete them.Over a period of two years, Thibault trained the algorithm to understand his thoughts by controlling an avatar -- a virtual character -- within a video game, making it walk and touch 2D and 3D objects.He trained on simple virtual simulations before using the exoskeleton -- which is assisted by a ceiling-mounted harness -- to eventually walk, and reach for targets with his arms.Over the course of the study, Thibault covered a total of 145 meters (around 476 feet) with 480 steps using the avatar, video and exoskeleton combined, researchers said in the study, which was published in 1549

A shooter injured 11 people early Sunday on Canal Street, on the edge of New Orleans' French Quarter, and a person has been detained though not charged, police said.Ten of the victims were transported to local medical centers, and one walked into a local hospital. America's Dairyland is in crisis. More and more Wisconsin dairy farmers are going out of business. Part of the solution might actually involve milk — but not in the way one might think.About 700 Wisconsin Dairy farms went out of business last year — more than two each day."The dairy industry has been struggling for a while, but now the problem has become acute and we must act and we must act now," said Wayne Weber, Dean of the College of Business, Industry, Life Science, and Agriculture at University of Wisconsin-Platteville.That action starts at a farm tucked away in the rolling hills of Southwest Wisconsin. Professor Tera Montgomery helps run the Pioneer Farm at UW-Platteville. The cows and calves are part of her classroom."It's a living and learning laboratory so there is something going on all the time," Montgomery said. "It's a working farm."Platteville is one of three UW schools hoping to get a share of million in research dollars from the state to start the first ever Dairy Innovation Hub — a center dedicated to tasks like finding new dairy products, but also looking for unconventional ways to use milk.One of those techniques involves combining manure and cheese byproducts in a digester, creating energy. Montgomery says that this energy could potentially run communities local to dairy farms.Students at the Pioneer Farm are also hoping to develop new products to help people with allergies or an intolerance to milk enjoy it."It's making sure we are making unique products that are going to be what the consumer wants and what the consumer needs," Montgomery said.It's not just about finding ways to produce more milk. A U.S. Navy sailor killed two U.S. Department of Defense civilian employees and wounded an additional civilian at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam near Honolulu, Hawaii, on Wednesday. According to Rear Admiral Robert Chadwick of the U.S. Navy, security forces responded to a reported shooting at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard around approximately 2:30 p.m. local time. The base confirmed that access gates were closed.
