(KGTV) — La Jolla's Children's Pool has closed for the season to make way for seal pupping season on the beach's shore.The annual closure went into effect Sunday and will extend until May 15, 2020. During the closure, visitors will not be permitted to use the sheltered beach and, much like the rest of the year, be discouraged from getting too close to the seals.The closure is meant to give harbor seals a safe area to birth and wean their young for the season. For years afterward, the city was tied up in litigation over the beach and ability to close it to the public. Critics argued the closures violated the state Coastal Act and the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act.In June 2018, a state appeals court ruled in favor of the city and the ability to close the beach for the season. A year later, the California Coastal Commission renewed a 10-year permit to close the Children's Pool to human access during pupping season.Critics have threatened to take the matter to the state Supreme Court, but the matter hasn't moved that far as of yet.The Children's Pool was opened in 1932 as a space for inexperienced swimmers to enjoy the water safely behind a seawall. Seals started convening on the beach in the 1990s and have since used it for pupping season.The California Coastal Commission has said they believe the water is unsafe due to bacteria levels from the seals and their excrement and encourage visitors to find somewhere else to swim.Officials have also been forced to post signs warning visitors to keep their distance from seals year-round, as the animals could feel threatened if humans come to close to them or their young. 2122

LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A work trailer slammed into a home, nearly hitting a girl holding her baby sister in East County Monday afternoon. Just before 1 p.m. Monday a trailer filled with debris at a home under construction started rolling down the Palm Avenue in Lemon Grove. “It sounded like a crash at first,” said Abigail Jimenez, who was inside the home at the time of the crash. “I was inside and laying down in the couch and I hear some noise and something was beeping and it pushes my couch and my baby sister was with me,” Jimenez added. Fortunately, no one inside the home at the time of the crash was injured. The building inspector had to yellow tag the house, saying enough damage was done to the home to limit the family’s access. I was scared after I found what happened because it pushed us and I didn't know if it was a dream or not but thank God that we didn't get hurt or anything,” Jimenez said. 929

(KTNV) - A security guard opened fire at a Ross Dress for Less in Las Vegas Saturday, sending customers into hiding for their safety, witnesses said.The shooting happened Saturday around 4 p.m. at the store in the Blue Diamond Crossing strip mall on Blue Diamond Rd.Dramatic video shows Ross customers, including a child, ducking under clothes racks as shots rang out.Watch the video:Witnesses said police arrived and exchanged shots with the gunman, who was hit by police gunfire. He was taken to a hospital for surgery. No one else was hurt.Shoppers at nearby Kohl's and Target stores were evacuated or sheltered in place during the exchange.The security guard was reportedly arguing with the store manager before the shooting. When police arrived, he also fired at them. It is not known at this time why the argument started.No personal information has been released about the security guard. LAKELAND, Fla. -- A family argument on Mother's Day turned violent and ended in the arrest of a mother and a son in Lakeland, Florida. Seth Bryant, 27, was arrested for felony battery (domestic violence) on his father, 58-year-old Clayton Bryant, after deputies say Seth and Clayton got into a physical argument over alcohol. The father and son were arguing after Seth demanded he be allowed to have more alcohol, according to the arrest affidavits. Seth reportedly put his fist against his father's face and pushed him with it, deputies say. After deputies with the Polk County Sheriff's Office arrived on scene, Seth reportedly made numerous derogatory racial comments toward the deputy who is black. As Seth was being arrested, Judy Bryant, 54, shoved her husband against a counter and said "How's this for domestic violence?" She then refused commands by the deputies and resisted the deputy's efforts to arrest her. Ultimately, she was placed into handcuffs and was arrested. Judy Bryant was charged with misdemeanor battery (domestic violence). 1083

LARGO, Fla. — The family of Linus Phillip, a man killed by a Largo Police officer in Florida on Friday, is accusing detectives of using the dead man's finger to gain access to his cell phone.On Friday, police approached Phillip's car at a WaWa gas station in Clearwater. Police said the vehicle he was driving had illegally tinted windows. While standing near Phillip's car, the officers claim they smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Police claim Phillip tried to drive away and use his car as a deadly weapon. One officer, Matthew Steiner, says he was dragged by the car when he tried to open the door and feared for his life.Phillip was shot and killed by police. He did not have a gun in his possession. Steiner, a seven year veteran with no disciplinary action against him, was injured during the incident but is OK.Phillip's family is demanding surveillance video from the incident at the WaWa gas station in Clearwater where he was killed. Police claim the encounter was not caught on video, only officers giving Phillip CPR.The family lawyer, John Trevena was surprised."There was no denial of the video to the family so this is the first I've heard of that," said Trevena.The family also claims that detectives used Phillip's lifeless finger to access his phone at the Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home."So they are allowed to pull him out of the refrigerator and use a dead mans finger to get to his phone. Its disgusting," said Armstrong.Police did not comment on the allegations, citing that there is a still an active investigation into the case.Phillip's mother, Martha Hicks started crying during an interview on Wednesday."They killed him after his 30th birthday. Oh god, he turned 30 on March 11," Hicks said. "It's too much too much we just want to know what happened."The couple has two children together. Their young daughter lost her battle with leukemia last year.Their son, Isaac is 16 months old."My son is no longer going to go have a father, or to make his dad proud. He's not here anymore because of this and the police are slandering his name like some awful person," said Armstrong. "We are fighting to find out what happened." 2240
