SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Scorching heat is expected everywhere except the coast in San Diego County Friday and a brutal stretch of temperatures is not expected to relent until the middle of next week, according to the National Weather Service.Building high pressure over the southwestern United States will usher in scorching temperatures for the next five to six days, with the peak of the heat expected Friday through Monday, forecasters said.The NWS issued an excessive heat warning that will be in effect from noon Friday to 9 p.m. Monday in the county valleys, mountains and deserts.LATEST 10NEWS WEATHER FORECASTThe NWS urged residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Humane Society officials reached out to the public Monday for help in finding whoever abandoned a gravely malnourished dog in Pacific Beach last week.The dog, a 3-year-old shepherd mix, was abandoned near Campland on the Bay, off Pacific Beach Drive, on or around last Monday, according to the San Diego County Humane Society. A good Samaritan found the "severely emaciated" dog Tuesday afternoon by the Kendall-Frost Mission Bay Marsh Reserve, near Pacific Beach Drive and Olney Street.The good Samaritan immediately sought veterinary care for the dog, but it was euthanized because of failing organs, according to the humane society. Veterinarians determined the dog was in such a deteriorated state that he could not have made it by himself to the location he was found -- meaning he was abandoned there."This is absolutely heartbreaking and completely unnecessary," said Humane Law Enforcement Chief Bill Ganley. "The necropsy revealed socks, a washcloth and a stuffed animal inside this dog's stomach. San Diego Humane Society is here to help, and to learn this poor dog was left to die in this state just a few miles from our doorstep is unfathomable."Anyone who needs help caring for their animal can contact the San Diego Humane Society. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to discuss the reorganization of the county's fire protection and emergency medical services into two separate agencies at its July 7 meeting.The reorganization would allow more flexibility for, and accountability of, dependent fire and medical services in the county's unincorporated areas, Supervisor Jim Desmond said.One of the agencies would be the Fire Protection District, which would provide fire services to the jurisdictions within the current service area. The other would be the Fire Authority, which would continue focusing on public safety radio communications.The supervisors formed the San Diego County Fire Authority in 2008 and developed a plan to cover and consolidate 1.5 million acres. The authority is currently part of County Service Area 135, which provides the government structure to organize and fund fire protection and emergency medical services in the unincorporated area.Since the creation of the authority, the board has invested more than 0 million to boost fire and emergency services capabilities. Currently, the Fire Authority contracts with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection to provide services. Collectively, the services are known as County Fire.According to a staff report, County Fire has more than doubled in size in the past five years. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California Highway Patrol arrested 58 people for alleged intoxicated driving in San Diego County during its annual Thanksgiving holiday enforcement period this year.CHP officers made the arrests between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 6 a.m. Sunday in the agency's jurisdiction in the county, which includes all freeways, as well as roads in unincorporated areas.All available officers were to be deployed to catch drunk or drug- impaired drivers, speeders and other traffic violators during the enforcement period.Last year, 66 people were arrested for impaired driving in San Diego County over the Thanksgiving holiday.Statewide, the agency made 855 arrests for impaired driving during the enforcement period, down from 965 last year. And 44 traffic fatalities were reported across all California jurisdictions -- two of which were in San Diego County.
