LOS ANGELES (AP) — A father and a daughter kidnapped a woman in a Las Vegas suburb and brought her to his Southern California house, holding her for at least a week, sexually assaulting her and then leaving her for dead in the desert, authorities said Friday.Stanley Alfred Lawton, 54, and Shaniya Nicole Poche-Lawton, 22, dumped the woman off a highway near Edwards Air Force Base north of Los Angeles, where she was found by military personnel early Wednesday, Los Angeles County sheriff's Capt. Eduardo Hernandez said at a news conference.The woman in her 40s was reportedly cold and exposed to the elements. She was taken to a hospital and has since been released, Hernandez said.The father and daughter knew the victim, but officials didn't provide a motive for the attack. They kidnapped her by gunpoint in North Las Vegas on Oct. 30 and took her to Lawton's home in Palmdale, California, Hernandez said. They kept her in a room, and at some point, sexually assaulted her, authorities said.Lawton was arrested Wednesday, and his daughter was taken into custody early the next morning. It was not clear if they had lawyers who could speak on their behalf.They each face charges of kidnapping to commit a robbery, attempted murder, kidnapping from outside the state, rape and three counts of first-degree ATM robbery, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office. LOS ANGELES – A judge ruled Thursday that Starbucks and other coffee sellers in California must carry cancer warnings, according to the Associated Press. The decision comes after a lawsuit was filed by the nonprofit Council for Education and Research on Toxins that targeted several companies, including Starbucks and 7-Eleven, CNN previously reported.The lawsuit alleged that the companies “failed to provide clear and reasonable warning” that drinking coffee could expose people to acrylamide, which is created when coffee beans are roasted.Court documents filed by the nonprofit state that, under Proposition 65, businesses must warn people about the presence of agents that affect health.The coffee industry claimed that the acrylamide was present, but only in harmless levels. The industry also argued that they should be exempt because the chemical results naturally from the cooking process.In addition to paying fines, the lawsuit called for companies to post warnings about acrylamide with explanations about the risks of drinking coffee."I'm addicted to coffee, I confess, and I would like to be able to have mine without acrylamide," said Raphael Metzger, the attorney who represented the nonprofit."Coffee has been shown, over and over again, to be a healthy beverage. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Adopters from across North America will travel to LAX Sunday to welcome some very special new members of their families — dogs rescued from the Chinese dog-meat trade.Two flights will arrive Sunday carrying a total of 27 canines, who will find loving homes in the United States and Canada thanks to the efforts of No Dogs Left Behind — a nonprofit group that rescues dogs from slaughterhouses, dog meat trucks, wet markets, and illegal dog traffickers.Eighteen of the dogs are beagles, and they'll be staying with fosters who work with The Beagle Freedom Project, which is sponsoring the flight along with NDLB and New York-based Rescue Paw Foundation.The remaining nine dogs have already been adopted.
