Amazon’s branding was visible elsewhere at SXSW.
Amazon’s U.S. East operation dates back to the very inception of AWS itself, and over the last few years it has been showing its age. AWS has opened data centers around the world since launching in 2006, but is believed to rely on U.S. East data centers for a lot of its service.
Amazon’s latest offering is virtual tourism through its new Amazon Explore service. GeekWire’s Todd Bishop went for a walk around Quebec City with a local guide and took a cooking lesson in Buenos Aires, all without leaving the office.
Amazon’s board recommended shareholders vote down the resolution because of the environmental programs and commitments already underway at the company. In February, Amazon announced plans to publish its carbon footprint for the first time this year. Brian Olsavsky, Amazon’s CFO, outlined some of these plans at the meeting, to applause from some of the employees who had stood earlier.
