WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The hurricane season continues to be active with the formation of a new tropical storm and a depression in the last 12 hours.Tropical depression 17 formed Sunday night in the Atlantic and became Tropical Storm Paulette just before 11 a.m. Monday.The storm has 40 mph winds with higher gusts and is moving west, northwest at 3 mph.Paulette is the earliest forming 16th named storm on record, breaking an old record set by Philippe on September 17, 2005, according to hurricane expert Philip Klotzbach.A slow-motion toward the northwest or north-northwest is expected tonight. Paulette is then forecast to move a little faster and generally westward on Tuesday and Wednesday.Early indications are it may curve before it reaches the Bahamas, but we will keep an eye on it just in case. When members enter the Schlessman Family YMCA, they’re greeted with new safety measures including getting their temperature taken at the front door.“We’re just ensuring that members, guests and staff are below a 100.4 fever,” said Vanessa Pritchett, sales director with the YMCA of Metropolitan Denver.She says most of the 24,000 YMCA locations across the country were shut down for nearly three months due to the pandemic.Now, with many YMCAs reopening, staff are taking extra steps to ensure member safety like using protective plexiglass at the entrance and having more hand sanitizer stations in more locations.“We really missed our members and we are so much more than a gym,” Pritchett said. “We are focusing on the mind, body and spirit of everyone in our community.”Additional safety measures include mobile check-ins, closing twice a day for deep cleaning, and restructuring the layout of workout equipment to promote social distancing.You don’t have to wear a mask while you’re working out at the YMCA but in between sets or if you switch to a new station, staff is asking members to cover up.To help keep the facilities as clean as possible, the YMCA is encouraging members to clean equipment before and after using it.“You are checking in via touchless system,” said Meredith Marshall, one the nearly 10 million YMCA members in America.She’s been coming to the YMCA since she was eight years old and says these new changes give her peace of mind while working out her body.“It lets me know that the YMCA has thought through what we are doing here,” Marshall said. “How we are to interact with one another.”Interacting and reconnecting with the YMCA community as they move to reopen safely and responsibly. 1725

While we’re still waiting on a comprehensive COVID-19 vaccine distribution plan, the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security released an ethics framework Wednesday for who it says should be prioritized.There are two tiers of groups it says should go before the general public. No surprise, the first tier includes front line health care workers taking care of coronavirus patients, people over 65, those with underlying health conditions and their caregivers.Also noted are people who work in the vaccine industry and those who will be administering them. Also, school, food supply and public transportation workers.One issue with that first tier is that's a lot of people, more than 90 million by some estimates.“So, it’s quite possible when a vaccine is available, there won’t be enough available for everybody in this top tier and so there may need to be prioritization within this top tier,” said Dr. Eric Toner, senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.The second-tier group includes other health care workers, people living in remote locations without access to quality care, and other essential workers like delivery, military, and first responders.It also includes people who live in places where they can’t socially distance, so inmates and people in shelters.The framework also mentions this is a decision that shouldn't only be made by experts and officials.“The public needs an opportunity to weigh in on this because, after all, they are the ones who are the recipients of the vaccines and whether they get it or not,” said Toner.The good news is the scholars don't see cost as a barrier to the vaccine.
