SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Support for the Black Lives Matter movement is now visible on a downtown San Diego street.Over the weekend, various Black Lives Matter banners were put up on Broadway, between Third Avenue and Kettner Boulevard.The banners showcase the work of San Diego-based artist Anthony Tyson, and they display the message that Black lives of every age, gender, preference, past, and future matter.“You know, not that many people of my color, of my ethnicity is around this area. So, my people can come down and see it, and then also you have people that are used to this area seeing something different. And it gets them to ask the question of ‘what is this?’ and that's all you really need at the end of the day,” Tyson told ABC 10News.Tyson collaborated with the nonprofit Downtown San Diego Partnership for the project.“The Downtown Partnership believes strongly in its duty to ensure organizational efforts are promoting equality and addressing systemic injustice and racial discrimination wherever they exist. In addition to commitments made within the organization, the Downtown Partnership is working to foster a greater sense of cultural vibrancy through placemaking and special projects. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The man accused of assaulting a Pacific Beach woman while she slept in her own home was in court for the first time on Monday. Jeffrey Hanze pleaded not guilty to the charges, which include sexual assault during a burglary. The 55-year-old was arrested in L.A. County on October 29th for the crime. Police say Hanze broke into a home in Pacific Beach on October 1st, getting in through an open window, then assaulting a woman while she slept. The woman woke up to the assault and Hanze got away.On Monday, the judge agreed to increase his bail from 0,000 to a million dollars and issued a protective order for the victim. A background check shows Hanze has a criminal record, including two felonies in San Diego County and several sex crimes dating back to 2011 in Arizona. Hanze is due in court again on November 15th.    913

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The man accused in the death of three migrants found in the trunk of a car in August was arraigned on related charges in San Diego court Tuesday. According to court documents, Neil Edwin Valera, a U.S. citizen who lives in Mexico, was arraigned in federal court in connection with the deaths of three Chinese migrants, including a mother and her 15-year-old son. The third person in the trunk was a female. None of the victims have been identified. Authorities say Valera is a truck driver from El Paso, Texas. He was arrested at a downtown bus station Saturday. Police discovered the bodies of the three migrants in the trunk of a 1999 silver BMW on August 11 after being called to the 2100 block of Jamie Avenue by a person reporting a foul odor. “The wind would start to blow a little bit, you can smell like, a really, like, it’s hard to explain. I’ve never smelled that before but I thought, well, maybe it was like trash or, you know, like that kind of smell but a very more pungent odor than that," a neighbor told 10News.Video recordings reportedly showed the same car crossing into the U.S. from Mexico on August 9. “These tragic cases are grim reminders that attempting to cross into the United States illegally in the trunk of a car – and putting your faith, hope and future in the hands of smugglers – is extremely dangerous,” said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. 1595

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of the man killed on India Street on this month has identified him as David Hill. The 38-year-old was a pathology resident at Balboa Naval Hospital. In the Navy since 2004, Hill had reached the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was an avid traveler, having visited dozens of countries. His mother, Carol Hill, said he had a goal of running a marathon on every continent. Hill had already checked off the hardest, Antarctica, though he had to get creative. “He did the 26 miles on the ship’s treadmill to fill that square!” said Hill's mother. He had made it a few blocks from his apartment when he was struck by the driver of a minivan on India Street near Olive and Palm. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The fire on the USS Bonhomme Richard has impacted every sailor who works on the ship, but also those who live on the ship. To help, groups have stepped up to accept donations to give to the people who have been displaced. The Navy Life Naval Base San Diego Facebook page posted a warning to watch out for fake GoFundMe or charity request pages, and said the government is not allowed to accept donated funds to fix or replace the ship.Related: Crews battle USS Bonhomme Richard fire for fourth dayThe post highlighted three official groups to donate to who are safe and reliable: Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, which is accepting online payments and mailed in checks to be donated to sailors,Support the Enlisted Project, which is accepting all types of donations, andUSO San Diego, which is also accepting all types of donations.Gillian Gonzalez, with the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, said more than 80 sailors lost all of their belongings in the fire. She advises that people who make donations to their group specify that their donation should go to the USS Bonhomme Richard sailors directly.The USO office is taking every type of donation, from hygienic items to clothes. Executive Director Ashley Camac said they’ve taken loads of items to the ship every day since the fire started.“It might have been where they lived. It certainly is where they worked.
