Roger Rowe School third-graders Grace Miller and Madison Stine set out to send a veteran to Washington D.C. with Honor Flight San Diego.They were so successful they ended up sending two veterans."That trip for me was the most fantastic trip of my life. I've been all over the world - and Honor Flight was the most fantastic trip I've been on," said George Sousa, a Korean War veteran who served in the U.S. Army.The girls also helped send U.S. Marine Corps Veteran Marshall Varano who also fought in the Korean War."It's great to see young people like this take care of older folks," said Varano.Fundraising is critical for Honor Flight San Diego. It costs over ,000 to send one veteran to D.C. and over 0,00 for the entire weekend. ENCINITAS (CNS) - A North County community leader who's known as a bicycle and pedestrian safety advocate was hit by a truck and seriously injured while riding her bicycle in Encinitas early Saturday.The crash happened shortly after 6 a.m. Saturday on North Coast Highway 101 near Phoebe Street, San Diego Sheriff's Lt. Dave Perkins said.The victim was Roberta Walker, executive director of the Cardiff 101 Main Street Association, The Coast News reported. Walker is known as a staunch defender of pedestrian and cyclist rights.She was taken to a hospital in critical condition, Perkins said. Walker suffered injuries to her brain and spine, as well as broken bones, according to The Coast News.Alcohol and drugs were not considered to be factors in the crash, Perkins said.Cardiff 101 Main Street is an organization that promotes "a safe and healthy environment" and "a walkable community that provides goods and services for local residents and visitors alike" in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, according to the organization's website.A biographical page on the website describes Walker as a passionate cyclist. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (CNS) - A motorcyclist was traveling at high speed when he collided with a pick-up truck on Interstate 15 in Escondido and was thrown into traffic lanes, where he was struck by multiple vehicles, the California Highway Patrol reported Monday.The CHP is seeing witnesses to the collision, which occurred about 9:55 p.m. Sunday near Via Rancho Parkway.A 48-year-old man from Chula Vista was riding a Harley Davidson Softail on the Centre City Parkway on-ramp to the southbound I-15 at a high rate of speed, according to CHP Officer Mark Latulippe. As the motorcyclist transitioned from the ramp onto the freeway, he sideswiped a Toyota Tundra traveling in the far right lane, the officer said.The initial contact between the Toyota and the Harley Davidson caused the motorcyclist to lose control, and the rider to be ejected, he said. Before emergency personnel arrived at the scene, multiple vehicles struck the motorcyclist, who was pronounced dead at the scene.He was not immediately identified. 1022

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — An Escondido restaurant forced closed by the county for violating health orders has been approved to reopen.Hernandez Hideaway was closed last week after its owner allegedly refused to comply with San Diego County's public health orders for facial coverings and social distancing.According to the restaurant's Facebook page, the location was allowed to reopen on June 27.RELATED: New restrictions placed on bars, restaurants in San Diego County amid coronavirus“Hernandez Hideaway is clear to reopen. They have agreed to follow state restaurant reopening guidelines. This includes their commitment to use facial coverings and ensure social distancing. They are required to post their plan for their patrons to see," a county statement read.The county had reported last week that the restaurant refused voluntary compliance with health orders on multiple occasions. At the time, the owner, Rick Stevens, declined comment to ABC 10News."Mr. Stevens admitted that he was not compliant and state he will continue to operate without these COVID preventative measures and will not require staff to wear face coverings," the ordered stated, referencing a June 23 visit by county officials.RELATED: San Diego County not named to state's watch list, but leaders warn it may happen soonThe restaurant was the second establishment forced to close in the county over health order violations. In May, Pacific Beach's El Prez was closed following social media videos showing crowds of guests, many not social distancing or wearing facial coverings.
