BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- China's health chiefs Tuesday renewed their commitment to providing the country with iodized salt and refuted concerns of excessive iodine intake.Chen Rui, an official with China's Health Ministry, said at a press conference that the benefits of iodized salt still outweighed the concerns of excessive iodine, citing the results of nationwide risk assessment of iodine intake led by the ministry.The assessment was carried out in response to claims from media and medical experts that some regions, coastal areas in particular, reported cases of excessive iodine intake since last year.Chen said iodized salt was still essential in China.Since 1996, iodine has been added in salt across the country because in most parts of the country, the average diet is iodine deficient.Both iodine deficiency and excessive intake can lead to thyroid diseases.Chen Junshi, a research fellow with China CDC involved in the assessment, said even in coastal areas the risk of iodine deficiency still loomed larger than excessive intake.

WUXI, Jiangsu, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Yuan Longping, known as the "father of hybrid rice", said on Sunday that his team was working on a new version of high-yield hybrid rice and might complete it in 2012.Yuan, director of the National Hybrid Rice Engineering Technology Research Center and a faculty member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, made the remarks at the World Expo's third theme forum, which opened on Sunday in Wuxi, in east China's Jiangsu Province.The new hybrid, the phase-III super hybrid rice, was expected to yield 13.5 tonnes of rice per hectare, Yuan said.The previous hybrid, the second-generation super hybrid, was released for commercial production in 2006, yielding 9 tonnes of rice per hectare, on averageRice is a major food crop that feeds more than half of the world's population, Yuan said.China is now planting 440 million mu (29 million hectares) of rice per year, with an average output capacity of 6.3 tonnes per hectare.Among the acreage, hybrid rice accounts for about 57 percent of the total, with an average output capacity of 7.2 tonnes per hectare."The average yield of hybrid rice is at least 20 percent more than that of inbred rice, feeding 70 million more people annually," Yuan said.China is faced with a challenging grain situation this summer because of strong rainfalls in the south during the summer harvest season. BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua)-- The amount of foreign direct investment (FDI) into China in May rose by 27.48 percent year on year to 8.13 billion U.S. dollars, said Yao Jian, spokesman of the Ministry of Commerce (MOC), Saturday.The figure brought the country's FDI to 38.92 billion U.S. dollars in the first five months, an increase of 14.31 percent from a year earlier.Yao said that in the first five months, FDI mainly flowed into the manufacturing sector, accounting for 47.32 percent of the total, despite a fall of 3.85 percent in the amount.The service sector saw actual inflow of the FDI up 32.05 percent from a year earlier, while FDI in the primary sector, including farming, fishery and forestry, rose 85.49 percent year on year, which accounted for 1.63 percent of the total FDI in the first five months.China approved the establishment of 9,638 overseas-funded ventures in the first five months, up 22.15 percent from the same period of last year.In May alone, the government approved 2,132 such companies, representing a year-on-year increase of 29.29 percent.
