INDIANAPOLIS — If you receive an email offering to help check your gift card balances, do not click on it, the Better Business Bureau says. Scammers are using websites to get your card number, pin number and drain your account. The BBB says you may also stumble upon one of the websites by searching online. They've offered the following tips to avoid gift card balance scams:Go to the retailer's website: If you need to check a gift card balance, go to the site listed on the back of the card itself. If there is none, go to the website of the company and look for a link to the gift card page.Use gift cards right away: A good way to avoid scams and other issues is to simply use gift cards soon after you receive them.Examine the gift card before buying: Before purchasing a gift card, be sure to give it a thorough look to make sure the PIN isn't exposed or the packaging hasn't been tampered with.Register your gift card with the retailer: If the retailer allows the option to register your gift card, take full advantage. Registering your gift card makes it easier to keep track of any misuse occurring, that way you can report it sooner and potentially end up saving the money that is stored. 1213
Italian law now requires vehicles to have a safety device that alerts drivers if a child has been left behind in the rear seat or a car seat. The law went into effect Thursday and is designed to prevent hot car deaths. Some devices will send visual and audible alerts when someone gets out of the car, according to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. Other devices will send signals to the driver's smartphone that it is out of range from the sensor on the child's car seat.Fines between 88 and 333 Euros can be imposed and drivers can lose points on their licenses. A second infraction would mean the driver's license would be suspended for at least 15 days. The law applies to parents of children under 4 years of age.The ministry says the devices are available online and in stores specializing in children's items. Parents at some point will be able to submit a receipt to the government to recoup incentive money. The government has not yet worked out the reimbursement paperwork, the ministry said. The law was proposed in 2018 after several hot car deaths. How the US is dealing with hot car deathsAccording to 1136
It appears some companies are taking advantage of consumers during the COVID-19 crisis as the Federal Trade Commission said Tuesday that it received 7,800 coronavirus-related complaints. The number of complaints the FTC has received doubled last week from the previous week, the governmental agency announced. The FTC said that top categories of fraud complaints include travel and vacation related reports about cancellations and refunds, reports about problems with online shopping, mobile texting scams, and government and business imposter scams. The FTC said that the complaints total .77 million in losses, or a median loss of 8. The FTC is asking consumers who believe they have been scammed to report fraudulent activity on its 753
INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana schools won’t have to place an “In God We Trust” sign in every classroom in the state, after some changes were made to a Senate proposal Wednesday.Sen. Dennis Kruse, R-Auburn introduced Senate Bill 131, which originally mandated each school place a poster or framed photo in every classroom and library that shows the following:The phrase, “In God We Trust”United States flagIndiana flagSB 131 was amended Wednesday afternoon to change the language in the bill and make it optional for the school corporations to put up the posters. It was also changed to state that if a school does put up such a poster, they must raise the funds on their own – instead of using public funds. If the bill sounds familiar, it’s because Kruse introduced a similar bill last year. Last year’s bill also called for every school including a study of the Bible as an elective course in its curriculum. The 2019 bill was vastly different at the end of the process than the one Kruse initially introduced.Sen. Mark Stoops, D-Bloomington, spoke against the bill in the last committee hearing, and did so again Wednesday."The Declaration of Independence noted that the power of the government is not from God, but from the people,” he said. “I think it's important to understand what the Founding Fathers believed when they had the clause that there must be a separation of church and state. This also protects religion from interference by government in their beliefs. I appreciate the time, and my vote is no."The phrase “In God We Trust” has been the national motto since 1956, but it’s been on most U.S. coins since the 1860s. In 1907, President Teddy Roosevelt famously did not like the phrase being on coins. The amended bill passed, 9-2, with Stoops and Sen. Eddie Melton, D-Gary, voting against it. It now heads to the full Senate. This article was written by Matt McKinney for 1893
INDIANAPOLIS — If you didn't file your taxes Monday, there are essential steps to take in order to move forward. The Internal Revenue Service says there is no penalty for filing late after the tax deadline if you receive a refund. You have until April 2022 to claim your refund, or the U.S. Treasury will get to keep it. If you owe, it's a different story. Hopefully, you filed an extension by April 15 and paid your estimated amount. If you haven't done any of that, you'll have late filing and payment penalties along with interest on your owed taxes. Turbo Tax provides this scenario: If you didn't file an extension and file a return ten days late and you have a ,000 penalty, your penalty would be , plus an extra dollar or so for the interest. The late filing penalty can be ten times higher than the late-payment penalty. You can also contact the IRS to see if you qualify for a payment plan to help pay off what you owe. After finishing your taxes, the IRS says if you are receiving a refund, you should get it in less than three weeks. 1062
