CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. — A copy of a school quiz entitled "Does Nikolas Cruz Deserve to Die?" recently gained a lot of attention on social media. The quiz was meant to be an assignment on the death penalty. School officials say it was distributed to students at Coral Glades High School in Coral Springs, Florida last week. The high school is just a few miles away from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where Cruz shot and killed 17 students and staff earlier this year.Stoneman Douglas parents like Cindy Levine are furious."These people lost their children, for crying out loud," Levine said. "And my son could have been one of them."The outrage spilled onto social media. Stoneman Douglas survivor and student activist Cameron Kasky, quoted in the quiz, tweeted "I cannot begin to express how pathetic I find this." School board critic Andrew Pollack, who lost his daughter in the school shooting, tweeted: "This is absolutely despicable." And, "Does anyone @browardschools have a brain?"School staff posted a message on the school website Friday saying they were unaware of the assignment. It said the material was from a subscription-based publication and has been pulled. The school said it's instituting a review and regrets the incident occurred.Scholastic, the publisher, sent WPLG a statement that their intention was to "... provide a platform for meaningful conversations around the history, civics and social impact of the death penalty. We deeply regret if this real life example added in any way to the ongoing suffering of the students, families and educators of the Parkland community." 1664

COACHELLA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The woman arrested for dumping puppies in a trash can in Coachella was sentenced to a year in jail, according to KABC. Deborah Sue Culwell, 59, pleaded guilty to animal cruelty and abandonment charges. The video then shows the woman dumping the bag between trash cans.RELATED: Woman caught on video dumping bag of puppies in CoachellaInside the bag were seven puppies, all about three days old and believed to be terrier mixes. An employee at the store contact animal services after a passerby discovered the bag next to the .“The Good Samaritan played a major role in saving theses puppies’ lives,” Department of Animal Services Commander Chris Mayer said. “His actions were humane and heroic.”“There is no excuse for dumping puppies,” Mayer added. “Especially in today’s age when we or other shelters would be willing to get these animals to foster parents or rescue partners. This was a shameful act.”All but one of the puppies survived, according to KABC. 1168

Congress has passed the biggest investment in national parks in decades. The House voted Wednesday to approve the Great American Outdoors Act, a sweeping conservation and public lands bill, which President Donald Trump has pledged to sign into law. Over the next five years, it will put up to .5 billion towards a backlog in needed maintenance for roads, facilities and more.“So, the park service, instead of doing band-aid fixes, they will have reliable, consistent funding to start doing some of these priority repairs, to ensure that our park service sites are safe, accessible, and they'll be around for generations to come,” said Marcia Argust, Director of the Restore America’s Parks Project.Argust advocated for the Great American Outdoors Act. She says this is the perfect time to make the investment, because Americans are looking to get outdoors more during the COVID-19 pandemic. The parks service has found the legislation will create 100,000 additional jobs. That's on top of the boost to businesses in surrounding communities that rely on visitors.Plus, the recreation industry as a whole supports 5.2 million jobs.“So, those are really important to sustain now more than ever, so this legislation during these times makes a lot of sense,” said Argust. The bill does not call for using taxpayer dollars. Money is expected to start flowing into national parks in October. 1391

CLEVELAND — Chadwick Boseman’s death is putting the spotlight on colorectal cancer.Doctors are concerned about the alarming increase in patients between the ages of 25 and 45 years old who are being diagnosed with colorectal cancer.“I’m seeing younger and younger patients. 22-year-olds, 25-year-olds, 26-year-olds, and it’s left all of us a little bit puzzled as to why this is happening,” said Dr. Alok Khorana with the Cleveland Clinic.Carole Motycka went to the doctor for shoulder pain four years ago.“He ordered some tests and it turned out I had a lot more going on than I anticipated,” Motycka said.Motycka was 42 years old when she was diagnosed with colon cancer. She is now on a mission to bring attention, awareness and education to the disease and the increase in younger patients.“Two decades ago, this was widely recognized as a disease in older people,” said Khorana. He said there has been a substantial increase. “Maybe 100% increase, but rates are still very low,” he explained.Colon cancer is much more common among older people. Black men also have higher rates of the disease. There has been a decrease in colon cancer rates among people 50 years old and above, while an increase in the 25-45 age group. Most young patients do not have a family history of the disease.Experts believe catching colon cancer early is the key to survival. But young people are typically diagnosed much later, and Khorana said the cancer seems to be more aggressive.Doctors don’t yet know what is causing the spike in young people.“There are a lot of clues. There’s been an obesity epidemic in the younger population that came 10 to 20 years before the rise in colon cancer,” said Khorana. “A second clue offered is antibiotic use in young people,” he added.Boseman, who played superhero Black Panther on screen, fought a battle off-screen against colon cancer privately for four years.“It’s sad to know it had to happen to have awareness take place but also it’s good to know we can have the conversation on a bigger platform and stage,” said Motycka.Click here for a look at symptoms of colon cancer.
